Around 1996 or so, LACMTA purchased 20 ex-Long Beach Transit GMC RTS T8J604s ( # 4452-4471 ). These buses were used by Ryder/ATE management at the time for use on Lines 205, 125, 232, and 270.
Ohh I missed these buses when I was a kid. So many memories along with Neoplans and Flxibles. Nowadays we have Junkcelsiors and pile of cheap plastic NABI 45C.
I'm not a huge fan of those New Flyer Excelsiors either. By all means it's a smooth ride for the driver but as for the riders, there isn't enough seating to accomodate the amount of people that ride the bus. It's even more cramped, uncomfortable and awkward standing due to the lack of seats. Foothill Transit's got them too and they can barely accomodate the people going to work and community college, it's 30x worse in Los Angeles. Smart move from LACMTA buying a fleet of them lol.
Do you know what the last year you could get a Detroit 6v92 in one of these RTS buses is before they switched to the Detroit series 50? Im guessing 1994 or 1993 was the last year but not sure.
Wow it's a shame that l.c..m.t.a took these buses away they should've retrofitted them for biodiesel u kno management do'nt think about the possibilities or preserving a classic like former ethonol tmc buses went back to diesel, the tmc's had alot of pick up & go & most of them did'nt stink mta got rid of the one that did in 2000 and in 2008 got rid of these to make room for the exrtra capacity cng's
