I needed this video! I was in the garden today and my onions (I planted sets like these you showed today), well, the onions are about the same size as when I planted them in March! I'll cover them with mulch and leave them in the ground this winter (southern Iowa). Thank you again!
Death to all groundhogs. Probably rabbits too 😂. Oh my what a battle. I screened fenced my squash to protect from critters but I’ve inadvertently blocked my pollinators too. 😢. Now I have to be the 🐝. When my life depends on the food I grow I’m gonna become one tough warrior and I’ll be supplementing my ground beef with ground groundhogs and rabbit!!! Survival of the fittest.
I’ve had to move my 5 gallon buckets of sweet potatoes to my shed roof to get away from the groundhog eating the leaves. If he would just nibble on the potato leaves he would die. How do they know the difference.
As a first time gardener it made me so happy to see that I did it just like you show here. All this RUclips watching and book reading has paid off for the first time lol. I can’t wait to learn and fail and succeed at different things. It’s never ending it seems. It keeps things fresh.
Thank you for breaking things down in a way we can ALL understand. I recently retired, and plan on spending a lot more time in my garden. New subscriber ❤
I plant my onions that’s closer together so I could get all the good scallions for the year and whatever I miss will grow into the next year and I do get a lot more Onions that way Early in the year in the early spring and they seem to grow just fine but your planting is really good
Hi!! Thanks so much for your videos! I now have a worm farm that is running smoothly thanks to you. :) I wanted to know what kind, IF any, fertilizer you use for your onions. I have mine in 5 gallon buckets, planted them about 2 weeks ago and am wondering if I need to fertilize with the 10 20 10 for this time period. Or if I should wait and just go with the blood meal later for the nitrogen content? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for this. I was not quite understanding bi annuals. I believe I do now. I planted seeds and covered them with straw for the winter. So I guess I will get if anything the starts and greens. The following year leave in the ground then I'll get onions. I hope I got it. Have a great day
It's a good idea to use the dibber. If you just push them in you can damage the base of the set and it allows molds and bacteria into the onion itself and you're more likely to have them rot out
Thank you for this! Our sprouted onions that my husband and I replanted instantly started to sprout and produce mini onions on top of the stems. It appears they are actually seed pods. Is that what is going on? It’s been a really fun process!
Thx for sharing! I’m actually looking to plant some bulbs this weekend. However, I don’t have a raised bed and just trying them (and a few others) out as a test run to see if I can get the hang of gardening. Will these work in a container/planter of some sort? If so will organic potting mix alone work or will I need to add fertilizer, compost or anything else?
The one thing that could be improved is never leave the little tip showing above the surface of the soil. Robins , especially, will see it and think it's a worm or a piece of grass and pull the onions up. Once the 'set' gets roots, in a few weeks, the onions are well anchored with a bit of green breaking the surface birds aren't a problem.
Hi! I have sets that came off of onions I forgot about in our pantry. They have 8-10 inch greens sprouting off of them. Should I cut them off and at what point am I good to plant them? Do they need to dry for a bit? And, last question is, if they bolt up, do I leave them planted for next season? Thanks - new planter here 🙂
Great video! I have wondered about trying seeds rather that sets for a few years, I might try both and see what works best next year 😁 Sets now - seeds in spring, should work nicely! 😁
I’m over in the Uk so my results may be quite different to yours! I never thought of using the plants that bolt as salad onions, that’s a great tip too, thanks!
I've been trying to regrow onion bottoms from kitchen scraps. After some initial and promising green shoots springing up.... they've mostly died back and left nothing but little clumps of rotting root in the pot the came from. But a couple of them produced tiny little onion sets like the ones you got from a nursery, there (but they were thrust up above the soil level as they grew) Time to try replanting those, I guess.
I am curious as to what kind of soil and nutrients you would recommend. I am a transplant from San Diego to Phoenix and the soil here is devoid of anything like what it was like at home. What should I add to bolster the barren soil! Peat moss? Please keep in mind I am trying to go all organic
Dirt is less nutrient dense where as compost is comprised of things like leaves, maybe vegetable rinds, grass- organic matter that has been allowed to decompose. It’s more moisture retentive and mineral and vitamin rich. It’s an added boost of vitamins (think natural fertilizer) and helps hold the moisture so you don’t have to water as often. Top dressing with compost or aged manure several times as your veggie garden grows, acts as a natural fertilizer all season!!
If I wanted to grow seeds for microgreens can I pack a bunch of sets into a grow bag densely planted for the tops for spring/green onions and then letting them flower to get seeds? Have you ever had that happen and if so abut how long until they bolt and flower?
When I buy green onions, I cut the bottom off with roots and put them in water. I've got 5 small pots and they're in my kitchen (apartment) window, growing like crazy. I've got 4 yellow onions, 1 white and 1 red all in containers in water. They seem to be doing fine; I've had to cut that green top back 3 times on the yellow ones and they all have extensive, thick roots. What kind of soil can I put them in? I get about 4 hours of sun daily (we're on the 5th floor)
The greens on my onions are laying over completely, should prop them up or trim them off so they'll regrow....planted them early to mid May & its July 3rd
Didn't know about the two year maturity for sets. Started both sets and seeds. Have patience. The sets ate doing magnificently. The seeds nothing....yet. I did elephant garlic last fall and it wasn't til spring the greens appeared. Just harvested scapes and with be looking forward to big bulb harvest in a few weeks. Is the same done with onion harvest for biggest bulbs? Wait til the flower bulb scape produce then cut them off to let plant energy go back to making bulbs bigger unless wanting seed? Thanks again
At what point do you trim off the greens how did they do ? I keep seeing other gardeners say you can’t get an onion bulb from a set. I of course planted sets I hope I didn’t waste space in my garden with them.
I plant mine bottom down but the next day there upsidedown the birds love turning them over this will keep happening until they root . How can I get the birds to leave them alone . I never heard of top coat . I've been growing a garden for over 37 years .

You're very welcome! Glad it was timely
I needed it 6 months ago but I’ve saved it for next spring lol

Now I have to be the 🐝. When my life depends on the food I grow I’m gonna become one tough warrior and I’ll be supplementing my ground beef with ground groundhogs and rabbit!!! Maybe hardware mesh is not a good choice but I can’t have too large of space for critters to get through. Any suggestions please. Thanks
I’ve had to move my 5 gallon buckets of sweet potatoes to my shed roof to get away from the groundhog eating the leaves. If he would just nibble on the potato leaves he would die. How do they know the difference.
Well, this explains why my onions didn’t do anything last summer. There is so much to learn about gardening. It’s mind boggling.
It's never-ending!
I'm glad I watched this. The directions on my onion bulb packet said something TOTALLY different!!!!

No fuss ,straight talking instructions, which I like ever so much, thank you,to a beginner,
.😊
Excellent video. I know it ain't rocket science. But you couldn't have made it simpler and at the same time, eliminating some of the pitfalls.
Thanks.
Thank you 🙏. Am planting onion bulbs for the first time this year and your video is really helpful 🥰

It would have been nice to show what happens to them after a while......we would like to see the result! :) Thanks!
Love your short to the point commentary 😀
I like the way you think! Trying things sometimes can have great outcomes. Can’t wait to see how these do for you.
Thanks Little Bean! Love seeing you inthe comments!
Kevin, how did the onions turn out? Updated please?
#epicgardening
Awesome job. Your smile is contagious.
Thanks for the video. Planting onion sets for the first time this year. Take care!
One of the most informing and practical videos I have watched.!!!
This by far was the best video Thank you
Keep up the great work. You inspire me to get in thr garden more. Love your content.
Thanks Danny, appreciate those words of encouragement!
Awesome! Just exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you! Also from southern iowa /northern Missouri 😀
Good video, short and to the point. I am planning to try onion sets this year in addition to trying once again to grow a few from seed, as well.
Good luck!
Love the vids ..you keep it simple and easy to understand. Keep up the great work!

great video. I have a question. I had leftover bulbs from last year that I stored in a mesh bag in my bedroom. Will these bulbs still grow?
Thank you for this. I was not quite understanding bi annuals. I believe I do now. I planted seeds and covered them with straw for the winter. So I guess I will get if anything the starts and greens. The following year leave in the ground then I'll get onions. I hope I got it. Have a great day
Good luck Cheryl :)
Great video! Short and sweet not long!
Very straight-forward instructions. Nice.
It's a good idea to use the dibber. If you just push them in you can damage the base of the set and it allows molds and bacteria into the onion itself and you're more likely to have them rot out
Good tip, hadn't considered that angle. Plus, the dibbler is fun!
Great video! I learn something new every day. Thanks, Epic Gardening.

planting slips is best if you want them to store well
Would have loved some information about temperatures for planting
Thank you. You saved me from wasting time on this vid.
They look great. Can you tell me how you get the volume of soil you are using without spending a fortune? Maybe a video link if you have one.
I don't have a video on it, but usually if you go to wholesale nurseries you can get vegetable mix sold by the yard

Yup, they'll work! Start with an organic potting mix and you'll be fine.
excellent video as always..clear, you anticipate our questions...perfect.
I’ll try your method thanks 👍
ive heard onions are good companion plant for tomatoes. is it a good idea guys?? Great video btw!!
Great Instructional video.

Short and ti the point. Good video
Informative video. I planted some White Onion Sets here in East Tennessee. Thanks for the video.
Great video! I have wondered about trying seeds rather that sets for a few years, I might try both and see what works best next year 😁
Sets now - seeds in spring, should work nicely! 😁
That's my strategy!
I’m over in the Uk so my results may be quite different to yours!
I never thought of using the plants that bolt as salad onions, that’s a great tip too, thanks!
Do you ever overplant & grow lettuce or something like it between the onions?
Thank you
What do you do during winter? Do I bring it indoors?
easy peasy, thanks.
Mine is growing great thanks for the video
Are onion sets okay to eat? Rather than buying at grocery stores? Not sure if something is done to them being sold at the garden center.
Great details and info
I live in winterland ... how warm does the ground have to be before I plant them?
That was such a fun video! Also, helpful - thank you.
Thanks for the video.
Could you please tell me the minimum standard depth of the container to grow onions?
Thanks
Thank you for this video it was a huge help
How do you know whether to use them for green onions or whether to let them grow for a bigger onion?
Just discovered your vids, epic good! Thanks so much! New subbie! 🤗

Now I know why the onions I planted from seed didn’t grow into big bulbs!
Thanks! I’m definitely going to try this! Minus the mulch 😉
when should I plant garlic? I'm in San Diego,Ca. Thank You!

What is the difference between using top coat mulch versus just a thin layer of dirt on top? Thank you. Very helpful video.

Why would instructions on bag of onion sets state to plant 4 inches deep? I should have viewed more onion videos. Thanks👍

The onions are closer together than I thought would be needed.
I always plant my onions with loam soil
Those look like California sky’s. Thx for the video, looking forward to the follow-up.
Thanks for the tip! Found them in a Bargain Bin, I will definitely be doing updates throughout the season
I'll bet that grew out a mess! Onions cooked 101 ways, yummmm!
The greens on my onions are laying over completely, should prop them up or trim them off so they'll regrow....planted them early to mid May & its July 3rd

Opps I planted mine today a little too deep...I guess i shoulf have watched this video first 🤣 guess i'll adjust them again tom
I brought an onion set that already have the green part that’s pretty long. That means they won’t grow to bulbs? 😕
How often do you water? Fertilize?
thank you! loved how informative it was.
So did the onions end up bulbing, or did they just grow the tops?
Thank u
When do you plant them in zone 8b? Thanks
How did it go with your onions?
Never will forget, an ambulance call I had. Old man out in his garden eating green onions fell hurt his shoulder.
I would have liked to have learned how the soil is prepared packed down or loose ??
can I still plant the set if it is a little mushy, not a solid hard bulb?
What kind of soil did you plant them in was it regular dirt or some kind of potting soil ?
I love all your videos 👌🏻
At what point do you trim off the greens how did they do ? I keep seeing other gardeners say you can’t get an onion bulb from a set. I of course planted sets I hope I didn’t waste space in my garden with them.
how loose should the soil be?
I grow these for green onions/scallions. A few times one of them grew into a large onion and I have no idea why that happened.
Wow. Thank you.
Do you use a high N fert. 20-0-0 ?
I plant mine bottom down but the next day there upsidedown the birds love turning them over this will keep happening until they root . How can I get the birds to leave them alone . I never heard of top coat . I've been growing a garden for over 37 years .
Jehovah, for his part, will give what is good, and our own land will give its yield.” (Psalm 85:12)
I’ve seen onions set on top of ground when full grown,HOW IS THAT?
Love your videos !
Nose to the sky~ toes to the ground.
I think you need to cut the onion a little bit on the top before planting. onion its so easy to grow
Hello, is it necessary to cover a top soil?
Bottom down top up, that's the way we like to plant 🤪
How deep does the container need to be?
