    This video explains a shortcut for converting between Binary and other bases that are powers of 2. Specifically, we convert between BasThe same shortcut applies between Binary, Octal, and Hexadecimal, as well as between Base 3 and Base 9.
    The shortcut that is demonstrated works because 4 and 8 are powers of 2, and because 9 is a power of 3. It is a GREAT time saver when you have bases that are related in this way, one is a power of the other.

    So glad that I came across your video. Back many moons ago when I was in high school, I had figured out this exact method while sitting in class, because I was certain that there was an easier way to convert bases other than creating algebraic formulas or complex division. Once I had figured out that the numerical bases could correlate with each other, I began working it out in my head without writing anything down. Personally, I thought it was genius because I loved math and puzzles. Unfortunately, as life happened, I stopped utilizing the technique and forgot how to do it. I remembered that I did it, but couldn't remember how it was done. So, thanks so much for jogging the brain juices.

    converting form base 8 requires transitioning to base 10 1st to go to base 2, got it but does this mean that base 8 can be base anything ? ? ? ?

    • @MzMath
      @MzMath  3 года назад

      Yes! The different number bases are just different ways of representing the same values. The number 8 can be represented in any number base.

    How do you convert back from base ten to wherever you started?

    • @MzMath
      @MzMath  Год назад

      Hi! You multiply it a h digit by its place value and add the products. For example, if you have 123 in base 4, that’s (1x4^2)+(2x4^1)+(3x4^0)

      @@MzMath so, in your example, the result was 43 in base 10. I'm not sure, how do I convert that into a base 4 or base 6? What you just described is a repeat of the video, going from base 4 to base 10, no?

    Can you divide 100 by three with an alternative base?

    • @MzMath
      @MzMath  2 года назад +1

      Interesting question! Thanks for posting. Yes, you can in the sense that the number 100 in base 12 (for example) is actually the quantity 12^3 which is divisible by 3.
