I have the exact same guitar. It's heavy as hell but the jazz tone it produces and the build quality are awesome. Btw, the top is laminated. Not carved.
they switched to laminate later in the 1980s. The Matsumoku ones are listed in BOTH English and Japanese catalogs as carved. Lacquer finish as well. In JPY, they cost 180,000, which is twice the price of a top-line ES 335 copy from any of the premier guitar companies in Japan at the time. in 1982 they sold for like 899 USD, which is over 3000 in today's money. It is not a cheap guitar in any sense of the word. EDIT: I'm dumb. I was thinking of the top of the line model Emperor-C. The thinline emperor was 115000 JPY, also just says "spruce top" on some listings.
That's the pride of ownership. I literally pulled this wonderful guitar out of the garbage on ave d in.nyc. I like to think I rescued from an abusive household
