Most chickens are given ample space to run around even if not truly free range they almost always are given a large amount of space to roam free within. It’s why they call it a chicken run. Roosters on the other hand can sometimes be too territorial and aggressive which leads many farmers to keep roosters confined in small cages for most of their lives and basically just let them out to mate with hens and few times a week. Sadly there are many farmers who wont even give a rooster a chance to lead the flock and will resort right to caging them which i disagree with but it is meant to be for the ones who are too aggressive not an automatic go to. For the most part you only keep chickens confined in cages when they are molting and need to be separated from the flock for their own good. Or if they are being sold and shipped live. Aside from that chickens have a pretty good life up until their last moments. At least by farm animal standards

I think it would be much more horrible to see the mass famine that would occur if we abandoned factory farming altogether though. This is a great life for chickens. My 6 chooks have a great life in city Sydney Australia. They hit the jackpot getting chosen by us. They will live for 6-7 yrs in luxury with corn, peas, feed and mince meat for the majority of their lives. Amazing 42 eggs each week for about $20 off feed. Everyone can and should have their own chicks. Or help your neighbours with your scraps.

One problem with chickens here in Australia is that you have chickens, you get rodents, and then you get Eastern brown snakes. Been there done that.
