Take a picture of Mike's initials, blow up the size so it's postcard size and frame it to create a small picture to be displayed in the boat. (Or else maybe cut it out of the wall with a multitool and mount it/frame it?). A great talking point and also displaying history of the boat. I wonder if this same small signature is the equivalent of a great artist signing their giant masterpiece?

You definitely need to frame and protect MP's initials - so cool, just like finding a mediaeval mason's mark when renovating stonework in an old building. It keeps the personal chain of connections that is part of the boat's essence. 😊

Yeah...me as well in my wood shop and machine shop...but, then...it wastes $$$. Then my better half gets involved and it turns into...: Yes, dear. You are completely right, love. Can I sleep in my bed tonight?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I joke. My wife really does care, is not a female dog, and, for some reason, she still loves me, puts up with me, tolerates me, supports me, bred with me our son...(unholy demon crotch spawn: Demon Murphy: watch your back), loves the unending parade of fuzzy puppers, gave me the safe place to fall apart when I had to help so many across the Rainbow Bridge. Never made me feel less when I fell apart when having to say good-bye to one of my fur babies.
Long story short: she reminds me when my Crohn's and then Kidney failure (NOT REMIND IN A BAD WAY)...well, let's just say that, after she reminded me that she can drive me to the ER when my R/C helicopter decided to do its own thing, when, 3 months after our son was born I was hospitalized and needed surgery, when my body faught the Crohn's medication and had my kidneys pushing me to almost end of life care: my amazing wife, innocent and corrupted, still makes my heart skip a beat--and then she has to have me sit down so I...well...let's just say her special kisses...she knows how to take care of me.
And, P.S. for those of you who may think this is fake: I actually paid attention to certain documentaries on Discovery Channel: the big C is not just a "bump". It is a whole ring around...well. you know...just inside. Wedding night: "THAT is what it is supposed to be like?"
Me: "May be a bit out of practice:, but I paid attention in...Biology 403..."

Reminds me of my mom: not afraid to get her hands dirty, help out wherever with whatever, and not make fun of me when it comes to my fear of heights and I froze on a ladder while trying to paint the eves of my previous house. Even helped me down. 43 years old here, 37 at the time, def needed mommy to help me off the ladder. I try to laugh about the absurdity of the irrational fear (was only 5 rungs up), but mom just tells me every time: that's what moms do for their baby dumpling. (I really wish I was joking about the baby dumpling part. My wife loves rubbing that one in. 🤕 )

It's not so much that portlights get punched in by waves (if they do, then they are woefully unfit for seagoing). The situation to protect against is a much more testing one: It can happen when a sailing vessel is caught abeam by a serious breaking crest that the vessel is thrown sideways down the face of the wave (which by definition will be both steep and high if it has a serious breaking crest). The first part to touch the water again will probably be the keel, which trips the hull over and slams it into the trough on its side.
This can impose a much more serious impact on the topsides than the breaking crest had, because it can happen that the entire panel (or portlight) is travelling square on to the surface of the solid water of the wave, which means it acts (for a short time, which is what matters) pretty much like a solid rather than a liquid, and the impact force will be in proportion to the inertia of the entire hull, rig and keel's displacement weight in freefall.
Whereas a breaking crest is a mixture of water and air, backed up by air a relatively short distance back from the impact zone, and a portion the size of a portlight has relatively little inertia.
The aforementioned impact force has in the past been sufficient to shear off the entire cabin top and side, in the case of even strongly built wooden boats, which is why knees and frames are so important in connecting them to the sidedeck and hull.
