Part of a series of videos on the sacred trees of Britain and Ireland, their associations in the Ogham 'Celtic' Tree Alphabet and their symbolism, folklore, mythology and practical and magical applications in history and today.
The May Tree, or Hawthorne or Whitethorn is sometimes thought of as the sister tree to the Blackthorn.
It is an ambivalent tree with both positive and negative associations in the Old Ways. A lot of this is to do with the fairy folk, the good people or the Sídhe.
In the Ogham, it represents the letter H (Huath) and denotes fear and horror.
Other associations include healing, fertility, sexuality, protection, boundaries and death.

There is a hawthorn tree in County Clare in Ireland which caused the diversion of a major motorway project twenty years ago.
The tree still stands on it’s own for all to see, undisturbed and makes one think of mysterious things stll afffcecting modern life .

I don't believe in ghosts, gods or any other fairy tales. But when I'm on the river bank fishing, I definitely get the feeling there's some spirit, energy or some form of unseen life amongst the trees. I find it comforting

Great video! My Ogham studies suggests that Huath in Irish refers to wounding or piercing, which is perhaps to do with the draining effect of fear. But as a boundary to the otherworld, we must overcome our fear like Frank Herbert says: 'fear is the mind killer, the little death' and reap the rewards of perception. Thank you for your words.
Yeah you might be onto something there. Also, maybe on a more practical level, the prick of a thorn often leading to infection, and then quite possibly a mysterious death (by fairy) must have led to quite a lot of fear around that little piercing. Great comment. Cheers

Thank you for this, took me back to my childhood (I am 65) I played on my own in a spinney full of Hawthorne trees and always believed in faerie folk, I now live in Snowdonia & we have a pink blossom Hawthorne tree in our garden which I love, our faerie folk are known as Tylwyth Teg 🧚♀️

The elder tree is tree of bad luck in Ireland. It should never be brought inside the house. It’s cursed because the wren that betrayed st Stephen bud in an elder tree and Judas escariot hanged himself from an elder tree.

As I listened I saw my Grandmother who was as my grandfather would call her when angry a “Tinker”.
I am 100% my grandmother knew all of this folklore. I didn’t understand her when I was a child when we went to Ireland every year for a holiday, but I get it now and feel so close to my Mother and Grandmother.
Ha! My Nan used to say “you little Tinker” if she was lovingly telling me off, and “y’Sassenach” if she was more seriously cross 🥰

Same... my Grandfather would call my Grandmother a tinker... and with some good reason... she was descended from the Highland Travellers who survived by telling stories (tinkers would fix pots and pans but her people told stories), they carried the aural traditions of Scottish folklore and with that, the handful of fairytales we still know today.
Thank you so much for these. Ive always felt a connection to trees, as though i could sense their energy and personalities. When i walk through the woods alone, i feel like some are beckoning me and I go up to them and greet them as i would a friend.
I used to tell myself that this was just a part of my childhood imagination that I wasnt letting go of, but your videos have been incredibly validating. By learning how much trees used to mean to humans, both materially and spiritually, I feel now that maybe my connection to trees isnt a quirk, but a blessing. And that is a very nice feeling, so thank you 😊
I too was was aware of fairy’s as a child. And still am.
Children are born open to otherworld, because they just left it. Adults use manipulation to close that door because adults have forgotten and are full of fear. They don’t even know they’re afraid. They think they are helping the child “succeed.”
I've built my niece a fairy colony in the far corner of our garden, I nailed a few fairy doors I found online to a sturdy tree. I also nailed a few fairy doors and windows to logs I placed around the tree with a little sign saying "Fairies live here" and I leave little gifts there for her to find with poems about protecting nature.
My hope is that she'll grow to be a great author or lover of nature at least!
Moved to Eugene, Oregon last year from Florida where I had lived for over 60 years. Republican hate drove me away. I now have two 160 ft Douglas fir trees at my front door. I also discovered a thorny tree in my yard covered with red berries. Harvested the berries and made a wonderful syrup. I found out it is a white hawthorn and just found your site. What an excellent discourse. It's May so I'm planning to gently prune it and will make it a cornerstone to my front yard garden. Can't wait for this year's berry harvest.

I planted a horthorn hedgerows right down my garden it's not the fasted growing hedge but very cheep and I know it's correct for the land and animals 👍

Another fantastic video. I've been away from youtube for a few weeks, but that's a good thing because now I get to binge your channel. One personal note. I never grew up with much connection to folklore. Trees were just trees to me, no meaning behind them, no personalities to them. Sure, I enjoyed them in the seasonal changes, but I barely knew the difference between an oak and a maple. But now I'm exposed to thousands of years of folkloric tradition, understanding these trees as more than just a thing in a landscape. Makes the world richer, hopefully makes me richer too. Cheers.

I love going in the ancient woods, while in there I look for interesting sticks laid about especially gnarly old oak, I also travel through trying. Not to damage a blade of grass, I feel like the woodland is watching that I’m on my best behavior.

I live rural Midlands so much hawthorn hedgerow can't say I've seen a lonely one around here . Got to be somewhere (I've never looked tbh. I can't go from memory anymore it betrays me from head trauma.

I love hawthorn tree I love there sweet smell and their hardiness also it is well known for its medicinal properties health food shops usually Cary hawthorn berries and the tincture for treating high blood pressure and heart problems

Nah, I think a lot of it is subjective. I find they start smelling pleasant, and then go on the turn. And that makes me seem like a blossom sniffer.

The Glastonbury Hawthorne still lives in a roundabout sort of way. Years ago a cutting was taken, and that grew into another Hawthorne in the Abby grounds.
Oh I hope they protect that tree. Some crazy conservative Christian of America will hunt it down. Unfortunately, I'm serious.

After a turbulent day yesterday, I was pleased this morning to see this video. A nice relaxing way to start the day. My thoughts towards the Glastonbury thorn tree is that it paralyses the Abbey, a superinposism of the then new Christian beliefs over the old regional beliefs of Avalon. Similar to building churches on land that was already believed to be sacred.
That’s an interesting perspective, there’s defiantly a lot of layers to that sacred landscape

In Scotland, the Rowan is a magical treee.
Great talk. In ireland and Scotland lots of trees have offerings.
Yes it’s historically more in Celtic language areas, but it’s also taken root in Wiltshire a lot in recent decades, a very sacred landscape so perhaps unsurprising

You just reminded me of a time, decades ago, when I was standing on the ramparts of Oswestry hill fort.
It suddenly occurred to me that the tops of the multi ring ditches would have been planted with a laid hedge of thorn..
I had never heard of it being done but it seemed so obvious , especially given the poisonous reaction to being pricked by blackthorn.
Yup. Had the same realisation myself some years ago. And in this part of the world the chalk outer facing walls being brilliant white - they must have been quite impressive structures

Was looking into different woods to make hiking sticks from and where I live there are a lot of Hawthorns in hedge rows so was thinking of asking land owners if I can take some fallen limbs or take a cutting in the winter… think il steer clear of that now and look for some Hazel instead. Here in the Netherlands we still have hedges! Especially around my neighbourhood.

@TheStoryCrow The south of the Netherlands is different than the North. And on the very outside of the cities, on the border of farmers' land, you will find them. You'll find them also in certain areas (villages/cities, etc.) to separate the houses from cycle paths and roads and others.
So, different view, but the same thing 😉 Some farmers still use the old hedges with Hawthorn, Blackthorn and more, as well as in my neighbourhood around the houses.
I use it to treat my heart failure.I am a retired pharmacist!

I remember when those two Buddhist statues were blown up. I was outraged and still am. All good to a any Buddhist, but the statues were also art, history, and culture and all of that was destroyed, because it did reside in the statues.
I’m not sure about gentle acceptance of these violent acts. I don’t think humanity is ready to live without warriors. Surely if we let infected minds take their own course unchallenged, they will be running things.

@@sylviabriggs4087 Thanks for your reply - the Hawthorn tree had been buffeted by the wind in a small storm, I had been wild-camping nearby and noticed the stick in my path as I left as if placed there, it wasn't there on my way in to the thicket. to find an Oak tree that will offer me a staff, I think i may need to travel a bit. Oak is a solid choice for a staff. Symbolically and practically. Also ash for simplicity. Good and straight. Or hazel for similar reasons. More of a switch though, that. Or blackthorn, but then that’s more of a club usually 😂

Here iam feeling rubbish with a bacterial throat infections replete with a 7 day supply of 'Aunties b@llox' in bed looking for something to lighten my mood... and wham...Heres a nee upload from my favourite alcohol swilling, roll up smoking, handsome history bard!! Yippee is ❤❤❤
Get some Honey, Turmeric/Black pepper and cinnamon down you, and you can throw Aunties Bollox away.
1/4 of a teaspoon of Turmeric, A pinch of ground black pepper, 1/8th teaspoon of cinnamon and mix with as much honey as you can fit on a dessert/cereal spoon.
Once thoroughly mixed, take right off the spoon. Tastes like old-fashioned Victorian sweets, do this once a day for 3 to 5 days and your ailment will be gone.
Use the same preparation for hay fever instead of shitty anti histamines.
Natural anti inflammatories.

Hawthorn brush grows in the fencelines of many farm properties in the Willamette Valley of Western Oregon (where I am a land surveyor). This is a Bavarian community. The spikes are very strong and very sharp. They are usually about 1 to 2 inches in length. I wonder if they were planted there on purpose.

@@scottwillis5181 I've spent a lot of time in Eugene and Springfield. Eugene and Seattle are the 2 Emerald Cities in the Emerald Empire. The Enchanted Forest is on the east side of I-5. The Sherwood Forest is on the west side of I-5.

I planted a mixed native hedge a few years ago and I have just trimmed some hawthorn and blackthorn, guess I picked the right month. My mother always told me that bringing May blossom is very unlucky to bring in doors. I can vouch that both are pretty fierce thorn wise…ouch.

It was in Northern Ireland as far as I'm aware, and apparently they cut down a sacred hawthorn to build the factory, and the company was forever plagued with terrible luck.
They apparently tried to re plant a new tree to try and patch things up but to no avail
Always thought it was kind of apt that the DeLorean's claim to fame was being a time-travelling car - perhaps if the car itself had a say it'd go back and save the tree :p

Hello. I live in Ohio USA and When I was a child we had a tree in our back yard and I was told it was a crab apple tree? Or some kind of apple tree? It looked like your Hawthorne tree.. Do they have similar blossoms? Could it have been one? Do they grow out here?

Yes crab apple trees can look a bit like hawthorn, squat and gnarly. And the trunks look a bit similar too. Check my apple video, it’s shot under a crab apple. I imagine they could have reached the US yes.
