the HARDEST part of watching Japanese shows adapted from Manga is the acting can skew cringey and too much BUT! Eiji who plays Adachi navigates that thin line and nails the comedy! He's so so good. Because there's so much BL in the world now, I rarely rewatch a full series (usual I'll just scroll through the highlights if I'm missing something)), but Cherry Magic I've watched three times! And I'll watch it again when the Thai version comes out. Lol. Also, Kurosawa was the original Green Flag bf. He walked, so the others could run.
So excited to rewatch a fave of mine with you guys, this show was a ray of sunshine to me during the pandemic. ALSO just gotta say If I’m understanding right and you guys haven’t watched Yuri on Ice omg, I don’t even need it to be content you guys need to just watch it for yourselves, it is an amazing anime and while it wasn’t labeled as BL, it is and it is a bl touchstone imo
Me too!! Cherry Magic was the highest standard for BL for me for a while!! Also, the pandemic gave me the opportunity to explore both anime and BL, so Yuri On Ice was another highlight for me!🥰
Cherry Magic is truly one of my favorite pieces of media. I only watched the movie a couple of months ago so I'm SOOOO excited for your reaction! I'm a little anxious to see what gmmtv is gonna do with it.
i took a manga class this semester and there was a whole unit dedicated to BL in japan. discussion posts are usually like 5 sentences to a paragraph.. I WROTE A WHOLE PAGE SINGLE SPACED JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH I LOVE BL..
soooo excited and looking forward to revisiting this show w u guys!! cherry magic still stands as one of my favorite BL shows of all time because not only is it funny and entertaining, but it's such a comfort show as it does a really good job of conveying character emotions realistically. when i first watched it, i cried at almost every episode because adachi being surprised at kurosawa's thoughts of him is so relatable to me since i also dont expect ppl geniunely thinking of me and caring for me, so i feel overwhelmed and grateful whenever ppl do tell me that they think of me. it made me realize that a lot of people care about me more than i think, and seeing adachi realize this throughout the series as he gets to interact with more people made me so happy and i just love this show so much omg i could talk about it for years
I thought I’d be able to just watch y’all’s recaps without watching along, but DANG IT y’all have twisted my arm! Now I’ve got to rewatch Cherry Magic for the 1037399th time 😆🤣
Thank you for providing me with a new source of serotonin!! I LOVE cherry magic, I watched the entire show in one night the first time I watched it. So excited to hear you guys talk about it!! 🥰🥰😭😭
I am so happy someone else is talking about Cherry Magic, this show was a ride but so great! My roommate and I watched it together and I have wanted to watch the movie but can't figure out where to find it! I am so excited to see this with you guys as well, I would love to watch it again!
I stumbled onto Cherry Magic back in 2021. I had had to leave Japan after living there nearly 40 years and then COVID separated me from my Japanese spouse/partner (we've been together since 1984). The show was so well done; it just made me ache with longing and nostalgia (didn't hurt that Adachi reminded me so strongly of my partner when I first knew him). I watched it over and over again and then began to seek out reactions. As a long-term student of Japan (I've written four books about the country), I'm particularly intrigued by a phenomenon that happens over and over again: the Japanese doing something for themselves and then stunned to find legions of foreigners fascinated by whatever it is. CM is a case in point (among other things, it became the single most popular TV program in Taiwan for a period and now the Thais, as you know, are doing a remake.). So I started looking at blogs and "reaction videos" ( what is it about the show that gives it such a universal appeal?) I just found yours and I'm really enjoying it. As you've noted, the production values are first rate (this is the first Boys Love program to be made for and run on mainstream television) and the actors are uniformly excellent -- Akaso Eiji, who plays Adachi, is not only the most beautiful object in the known universe, his performance nails the character of the insecure young "salaryman" (Japanese English for a male office worker) without much in the way of dreams or goals (see Ep. 6 where this he blurts that out). The show perfectly captures the rhythms of Japanese office life as well as the day-to-day routine of the typical young "salaryman" (e.g., cramped apartment; long commute). A couple of comments: trains in Tokyo do stop running shortly after midnight and don't start up again until 5:30 a.m. or so; people who miss the last train often do end up in internet cafes or all-night saunas. Urabe, who first tells Adachi of the "virgins become magic users on their 30th birthdays" urban legend is his "senpai" -- the word translates as "senior" but in a hierarchical society it carries a lot more weight. A senpai in one's work unit is not exactly a boss but someone whose requests one really has to follow.
I just finished watching this series! I watched it bc. 1.) Saw it kept getting recommended alongside a recent fave bl I watched (My love mix up) 2.) I want to listen to another of your recaps since I've run out of your boys planet and Iland series. Hahaha i just love it when you discuss and breakdown shows! It's so entertaining and fun~ I'm going to watch the next episode recaps ^^
About the yellow tint, it is very much a japanese drama thing. A lot of them, independent of genre, are color graded like that. I couldn't really find a good source that explains why but someone in a forum said that it could be because yellow is associated with good luck culturally🧐 (An aside but I think you are wonderful and your banter brings me a lot of happiness ❤ Also, I really appreciate your insights 🤗)
I went to japan in 2019 and in a random manga store i went to, the manga for this was being promoted EVERYWHERE. I couldn't read Japanese too well at the time so i just bought it because it was being promoted and then after i got back from that trip when they announced the tv show i was "OH MY GOD ITS THAT RANDOM MANGA I BOUGHT" and how i have all the current volumes in English lol its occupied my mind for years lol
The lowkey shade of the BL qualities 😂! But honestly agree! We gonna need Thai and Chinese/Taiwanese BL’s to get on the quality level as Korea and Japan. But we also gonna need Korea and Japan to give us more than 15 min episodes and be like Thailand and China/Taiwan where they give us 35-45 min episodes and 20 episodes total. If there is a time where Asia needs to come together more, it’s BL culture 😂
You’re the first reactors I’ve seen who realized the light levels were manipulated. However, it’s not a mistake, it’s purposeful. The green levels were brought up to make the color blue pop. Blue is used to represent love and emotional energy between characters. If you look for it, you’ll see blue objects placed strategically between and around characters. The clue is in the title card that has a prism-like rainbow on it. However, the rainbow is upside down with blue at the top. This is extremely well thought out and planned nearly in every scene, when Kurosawa is in a taxi, acknowledging to himself that he knows someday he’ll have to give up this love, we see a blue vehicle outside the window that pulls out of the frame just as Kurosawa is thinking the negative thoughts. I first noticed this when I realized there are two scenes in the movie that are direct references to the French film Amelie. That movie was color corrected in a similar manner. In the manga we learn that Adachi’s “hallucinations” are him seeing Kurasawa’s thoughts when they go beyond just words. Unusual and interesting reaction. I agree with a lot of your observations, particularly Eiji Akaso’s physical comedy. He’s brilliant at it throughout the series. And you’re right, the acting is technically difficult because of waiting for inner monologue to finish. They evidently used hand and foot signals to let the other actor know they’d finished their lines.
If you watch more Japanese shows you’ll definitely notice that most of the things you point out are very Japanese, like the dialogue, the intro, the cinematography etc :)
Y’all should put the Japanese BL “More than Words” on your watch list! It’s kinda silly, then really sad, and you even see a lil booty. Also YES to golf courses can go.
Surprised to hear this is the only Japanese BL you guys have watched. I prefer Japanese BL over Thai because in general the quality of the acting and the production value is better. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Old Fashion Cupcake and My Beautiful Man as other JBLs to watch. You also might enjoy A Man Who Defies the World of BL which is a hilarious satire of BLs.
You guys must must must watch Hamaguchi’s other movies.. all of them are essential viewing.. if you loved Drive My car, you will love Happy Hour and Wheel of fortune and fantasy.. both are fantastic.. also since you guys are already acquainted with Nishijima, I highly recommend his fantastic BL What Did You Eat Yesterday? (Kinou Nani Tabeta). It will have its second season this year.. Also Japanese BLs are overall better than all other countries.. at least for me.. last years best was a five episode show called Old Fashion Cupcake.. with Eternal Yesterday being the second best. If you guys gonna do a patreon exclusive you should do these two…
I can't believe this is your first JapaneseBL... wwooooaaahhhh!!!🤨 IMHO, japanBL is the Supreme Leader of BLs. At this point, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea are just fighting for second. Bite me 😅
as someone who has watched a lot of japanese dramas, they just are that yellow for some reason. these days it's letting up a bit but yeah the color correction is just something you'll have to get used to. also, rj if you start getting into bl manga i fear you're gonna have to quit your job because that is a hole you do NAWT get out of.
If you like slapsticky/physical comedy J-BLs, you might want to watch Kieta Hatsukoi (2021). It's funny, wacky, and sweet. Aoki tends to have very exaggerated reactions to things, and his love interest Ida is a walking green flag.
if you're born again and cleansed of sin, do you get to become a wizard? and get to do all the stations of the cross for the first time? asking for a friend with a scraped knee/wet hair.

I agree!!! I rarely rewatch anything, Cherry Magic is the exception because it's exceptional 🥰
the opening credits reenactment is the best thing I've ever seen!!😂

if they watch yuri on ice they will lose their minds i think
Me too!! Cherry Magic was the highest standard for BL for me for a while!! Also, the pandemic gave me the opportunity to explore both anime and BL, so Yuri On Ice was another highlight for me!🥰
The acting on the opening of the show... chef's kiss!
eiji and keita are such good actors and they put so much emotion into their characters and theyre so cute together aaaaaa
