Looks like Hollywood is being gentrified. Old historic places razed in the name of progress. In their place are strip malls and Soviet style condos. Same thing is happening in my hometown, Dallas. Do you happen to have a matchbook for the Villa Capri, James Dean's favorite restaurant in Hollywood? It was on McCadden Place just north of Hollywood Blvd.

Love this, great job! I wish I had my dear old friend Jeans matchbook collection, it filled one of those big brandy snifter jars and all of them were from Hollywood, where she lived in the early 60s. She was a wild woman and used to be a Bob Hope golf caddy girl. She knew quite a few celebrities and had some great stories, some of them pretty racy. LOL. She knew Jack Cassidy, Tom Bosley, Robert Stack among others.

My little Dresden story: I ended up there years ago w some friends after a night of Rockabilly shows and swing dancing - like you do- to have have some cocktails & catch Marty & Elaine's set.
We gathered 'round the piano and had a festive sing-a-long of classic standards, hoisting our drinks and having a terrific time.
Afterwards, I got to meet them and I said to Elaine "Your show was such a treat!" She looked me up n down (we're the same height) and she says "Well. You're a treat to look at!"
Saw them again years later, w a pal visiting from Australia, on my 46th birthday for dinner and their show.
    Good times..

My mother, who passed away a number of years ago, gave me a box full of 1930's & 1940's matchbooks, many with the matches still in them. My grandparents loved to go out and hit all the night spots or clubs when they were younger and kept matchbooks from each place they went. The names of the places, the faded pictures on the matchbook lids, and the smell of the matches themselves, always fascinated me, especially because I knew the places the matchbooks were from, have all been stupidly torn down and replaced with crap and now just a simple matchbook is all that really remains of them. Anyhow, the matchbooks are from places around Los Angeles and San Francisco . Great video. Keep them coming.

Club Lingerie was a Hang of ours another lifetime ago..
Some added trivia: Chili Peppers were kinda the House Band then. For some reason all the local Pimps and their "girls" would be there. Gave the place a kind of edgey vibe to say the least..

Scott, when I was a little girl in Connecticut my mom went to a bakery and discovered a cake that looked perfect for a baby to smash their face in lol. But as I grew older I grew to live this unique cake and it became a tradition that every year for my birthday my mom got me a Brown Derby Cake. I had one every year all the way through to my college years!
I asked my mom why it was called Brown Derby and I vaguely remember telling me it’s because it looks like the hat and she thought the cake came from a restaurant recipe but she wasn’t sure. YOUR VIDEOS are the first time, 30 years later, that I’m seeing that actual friggin restaurant and now know it’s from California! It literally made me cry! Such memories!
So the Brown Derby restaurant made a cake that made its way to the East Coast. Apparently, it’s popular in the Jersey area. Just last year I asked my friend if he knew about Brown Derby Cake because I miss my cake and wondered if I could restart my tradition. Never heard of it.
I am obsessed with that restaurant! I love seeing the pics. Personally, it breaks my heart to see all those great places gone, but I guess that’s life. I think the early recipe had just grapefruit, but the cake looks like a Brown Derby hat and is fluffy whipped cream with strawberry, banana, and sometimes peaches and grapefruit filling and chocolate cake crumbs all mixed in. It’s the best ever. I’m in a mission now. That was such a big part of my childhood. Looking forward to that Brown Derby Cake, and there was never even a question. That cake was there every year for almost 20 years of my life. Seeing that restaurant just blows my mind. Can’t imagine, that recipe made its way around the country! I even looked it up and sure enough, it DID start at the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood and the guy, who invented it with the help of a socialite who ate there often and asked for a special cake, sold the secret recipe to General Mills. It started to evolve and look more like the hat, which it didn’t in its first form, and it made its way to the East Coast.
It’s the best cake I’ve ever had to this day. Now I know where it came from!
Would someone invent a time machine, already!

Thank you for helping us get through these rough days, you are truly helping your fellow man! The incredible knowledge you retain is astounding! I love hearing about the history of things, places and people so please give us more!! Stay safe and stay well There are so many places around Hollywood and Vine that tourists come that most of us that live here don’t go. Have you ever done one on that area? I feel like people may have a little more respect for a place if they realized the history of some of these places. It’s tragic how we loose so many iconic buildings and businesses. Thank you again!

I use to get my mail at 8033 Sunset Blvd. I did not know there was a hustler bar called Numbers in the back. I came to get my mail around 11pm one Friday or Saturday night, i parked on the side street as always and a yellow Rolls pulls up and the driver, Robert Reed asked me if i was available? I had an idea what Pa Brady meant and i just said no. I told a few people about that and 1 of them explained that Numbers was in the back. Once i knew, it was not a story i told while Robert Reed was alive, since i don't believe in outing people.
