- 1990 may feel like only yesterday for some but it was actually a whole 33 years ago, not to make you feel old. Lots of great games released during those 12 months and some of them were better than most! From Gargoyle's Quest to The Secret of Monkey Island here are the 10 Best Games of 1990.

It was nice to see a game I worked on on one of your lists (PGA TOUR Golf)... It was even nicer to see the credits screen where my name appears! Thanks for that!!!
Congrats! What’s your lowest score in the game and real life lol?
Nice! Such a cool gaming period!
Holy shiz! Your first name is actually Happy like Happy Gilmore! This made my day! Hope life has been good to you. 🙏
"Frost your tips."
You can tell they either weren't alive or weren't old enough to remember 1990. Frosted tips were the other end of the decade.
Motorcross Maniacs was a real throwback! The OG Trials
Facts, gameboy color sequel is even better
Kikstart on Amiga/C64 beat Motocross Maniacs to the “Trials predecessor” punch by a few years, but, yeah, this is definitely another inspiration.
@@RonnieBarzel Nobody cared about Amiga/C64.
@@StageRight123 I have never ever before and will never ever after in my whole life read something that is SO. UTTERLY. WRONG.
Secret of Monkey Island I am surprised the score isn't higher this was one of the best adventure games of all time
It is still in my regular rotation with the remasters on steam and psn. Played the whole thing again in retro mode. Worth it.
Is a bit repetitive for me I prefer broken sword. I enjoy solving murders etc though ironic really as my mental age is 2 years behind my real age. Meaning it’s surprising, I prefer the mature broken sword series over the more child friendly offering monkey island.
It is more that nowadays People count everything below 85% as bad, thats just wrong.
I’m surprised Wing Commander isn’t on this list. It was such a landmark game that launched a franchise. Actually it started an entire genre of games.
Actually, Elite started the genre, but I am really stunned by Wing Commander (That was way better than Elite and really added up to the genre) not being mentioned and Gaiares (specially the MD version, that is not the best) being so high on the list. Musha is another surprise since the game only got some fame by emulation as there weren't so much cartridges manufactured (same for Gaiares and a lot of other games on the list)
Ah 1990, the year that love got the world in motion. If you have to ask you weren’t there.
I was there but really young. So what do you mean?
Baby don't hurt me
@@nickst2797 World Cup 1990, Love’s got the World in motion was the England World Cup song and a massive hit.
@@Technoir444 Oh I thought it was something worthwhile 🤷♂
I was 12 back then but never a World Cup fan. So that reference was also lost on me.
Man I’m really starting to think I missed out not playing the mega drive back in the day cause those games look amazing 💯
Yes you missed out but also didn’t as there are now many indie games based on those 90s games
@@j.a.weishaupt1748 Still nothing beats the original
No Super Mario Bros 3?
No Castlevania III?
No Ninja Gaiden II?
No Ultima VI?
No Ys Book I & II?
No Wing Commander?
No Castle of Illusion?
Disappointed...
No Speedball 2
No Eye of the Beholder
No Damocles
No F-Zero
No Rick Dangerous 2*
Ah 1990, when some game reviewers still considered 50% as average.
*jk
@@theseusblackwell5252 Fairly certain that Eye of the Beholder came out in 1991. Yeah gaming was definitely more unfiltered back then and no one really understood what made a game good... except Nintendo. Which is why the lack of Super Mario Bros 3 on this list is so egregious. It was probably the first "gaming release event" and it was even featured in The Wizard movie to build up hype. I remember begging my mom to get me this game on launch day and even she got tired of all the ads on TV. It also totally lived up to the hype and its still my favorite 2D Mario game of all time.
No Mega Man 3
No ActRaiser
No Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
No Bonk's Adventure
No Final Fight
No John Madden Football (Genesis)
No Railroad Tycoon
No Final Fantasy I (III released in Japan 1990)
No Dragon Quest II (IV released in Japan 1990)
No StarTropics
No Crystalis
No Herzog Zwei
@@benbehzadpour1177 Had to check, completely right - 1991. Serves me right for stubbornly relying on memory. On the other hand, desperately wish Rick Dangerous had never been released.
@@theseusblackwell5252 Rick Dangerous was awesome as a kid :D
Time for the series to get more best videos in the 2010s! No rush obviously, but I’m looking forward to it 😁
Motocross maniacs got better review scores than monkey island? Incredible!
I had Monkey Island 1 and 2 on the Amiga. If was great if you didn't mind the disk swapping!
I think it was 11 disks for Monkey Island 2!
I had lent my copy of motocross maniacs to a friend back in 6th grade and he moved away! Zack, if you're reading this! * *shakes fist* *
Treating my childhood like ancient history 😢
Has it already been 33 years? Oh boy... I remember playing Monkey Island and Gargoyle's Quest when it came out. Loved (and still do) LucasArts Adventure Games. Also played some of the Sierra Adventures. Not as great...but still lots of fun. And I totally forgot about Motocross Maniacs! I loved that game. But until today it was wiped out of my memory.
In the 90s, nostalgia wasn't around to cloud our perspective on games. We called it as it was, I think. We didn't have as much common knowledge or expectations since the internet wasn't as big and available to keep us informed.
If a game sucked, the reviewers were pretty honest. I do remember scores being pretty harsh in magazines.
Thats just my personal observation. No idea if my theory is on point or not.
Frosting tips didn't really come into style until the late 90's, just fyi.
I also think that game scores of high 70s+ were considered really good back in the day. It's a 2000's and onwards thing where people started thinking that scores in the 70's meant the game was meh.
Old man shouting incoming: Frosted Tips were a late 90's and early 2000's thing. Not a 1990 thing.
Frosted tips were more of an end of the decade thing...
Wasn’t frosted tips a thing almost a decade later?
Yeah like 98 to 2008 kinda period
Good stuff. And not only was I alive in 1989, I was on the internet in 1989, and have known how to use it for decades. But I appreciate the flamebating trolling. Might even get a tweet out of me. 🙂
Due to inflation, 1990's 76.5% is equivalent to 91.2% in today's money.
Nice Brian Butterfield reference.
Mystery Meat!!!
Best year of my gaming life. Amiga was king back then : )
🤣Nobody owned an Amiga.
@@StageRight123 Apart from most of the UK : )
i remembering sinking so many hours into Motocross Maniacs on the Game Boy, a true underrated gem!
Yeah - frosted tips weren't a thing in 1990
the way they said way back in 1990 made me feel old.
I LOVED GRANADA!!
I genuinely thought I was just about the only person in the UK to own a copy of this brilliant little shooter. One thing that all the reviews got wrong - the number of levels. Every review quotes 8 levels. I remember playing to at least level 12! Granted, the levels from 9 onwards appeared to be palette swaps of earlier levels, but they seemed to just keep going! Eventually I ran out of time and had to stop playing... never got that far again on repeat plays.
Intro: no ports! Original releases only!
Actual video: Strider port!!!
Super Mario bothers 3 is number one on my list. 😀👍🎮
I remember playing the hell out of Motocross Maniacs. It was like a better version of Excitebike.
Oh wow! I forgot Motocross Maniacs existed. I remember enjoying that game back then.
Mmm kinda wanna get that motocross game boy game! Maybe it's the grey & green colour palette but something about it looks really appealing.
Game boy graphics are so appealing to me too.
YOOOOO Gargoyles Quest! I used to play this game so often back in 2008 / 2009-ish when my mom gave me her old gameboy. Never managed to beat it tho. It was too challenging for me. Somehow I did beat the first megaman tho. I guess that means Megaman is easier than Gargoyles Quest lol
"Frosting those tips" wasn't really a thing til the late 90s early 00s mainly the 2000s.
I'm much looking forward to the day when team triple jump have a younger channel making fun of their advanced years. It happens to us all at some stage haha.
It's so damn good when people call the Mega Drive "Mega Drive" and Football "Football", not "Genesis" nor "Soccer"
What a strange top ten. I grew up during those years and I don't recall playing any of these or knowing anyone who did lol.
Yeah. Definitely a weird list. Even an ageing gaming saddo like me can only recall half of this list.
Same , iv only heard of Phantasy Star and Monkey Island because I remember them being featured in games magazines back then. Never knew anyone that played them though.
How was it living in that alternate universe where only Nintendo existed?
I played that Gargoyles game on Game Boy, but all I remember about it is that it pissed me off. I was pretty young.
Ain’t nothing like the 90’s. Sad today’s kids will never know.
Finally, 6 years after I was birthed
Snap. Great vintage.
I clocked sooo many hours in Motocross Maniacs as a kid in the car on family road trips
No Wing Commander, F-Zero, ActRaiser, Railroad Tycoon, Mega Man 3?? What an odd list.
I loved PGA golf, Fred Couples baby!!
Lol "people who were alive back then don't know how to use the internet.". Ty for making me feel old and laughing my butt off.
This made me think of PGA gold 2 on the Mega Drive. My brother and I played tons of that.
Frosted tips... in 1990?
1990 wasn’t a long time ago! It was just ::CALCULATING:: Oh my stars, I’m so old.
Wow, PGA Tour Golf, that brings me back. I'm definitely showing my age when I say I remember playing it for a good while after school in my elementary school days.
Great to see Quest for Glory get a mention - seems to be a mostly forgotten series
This is my favourite gaming channel, keep up the good work
This and SkillUp are my 2 go-to gaming channels. Great stuff.
Musha looks amazing on the Genesis. It’s graphics and gameplay is way more fun than any other space shooters I’ve seen.
I was born in 89 and I feel attacked! Lol
Never not gonna click a video with monkey island on the thumb...
Wow! Mega Drive, PC and Game Boy were killing it in 1990! 👍
Love these videos
I would love to see the TripleJump team's take on games from earlier than 1990, even if it is not in the "Best/worst games of" format.
Yeah...I hope they don't lean too heavily on ZX Spectrum nostalgia because that might be the platform that has aged the worst in history compared to how good it was at the time
I think the Problem nowaday is, that many consider 70-80% bad, thats just stupid :D
Super Mario World was #1 no way you didn't even include a mention 😂.
Anywayy good video
I appreciate the emphasis on titles that are usually not as hyped these days. I've only just started going back and appreciating Sega MS and Megadrive games. A few great console/PC games that year that stand out to me:
Wing Commander: the first truly great space fighter sim
Loom: for pure atmosphere
Ultima VI: essentially the prototype of Ultima VII
Megaman 3: The best in the series
F Zero: Just for the sense of speed
Super Mario World: One of the better Mario games, which is saying something
Ninja Gaiden 2: Excellent ninja action
Crystalis: nothing quite like it these days
Actraiser: ditto
(It occurs to me I'm going on US release dates though)
... Millennials are born in the 80s! Lol
...didn't Super Mario 3 come out in 1990?
Thank You Triple Jump I Love This Best And Worst Series Of Each Year Now We Have To Do The 1980s And 2010s I’ve Been Blessed To See All Of The 1980s To Now What A Life Of Gaming And Frost Tips Were Around Mid/Late 1990s To Early 2000s Not 1990 And People From My Time Created And Grew Up With The Internet And Know How To Use It
Yes! Busted reference!
That was lovely but I really fancy some hoi sin crispy owl.
That Gaiares game totally reminds me of Gradius 3 on SNES, i'm sure it's probably similar in gameplay but just the assets alone look like they could be from the same world or universe as Gradius 3 (Life Force 1&2 on NES in America). It's made by Konami and i always felt like it was alongside the Contra series kinda like Contra was the on ground fight and Gradius was the in air\space fight during the same war against aliens or whatever and this Gaiares looks and sounds like it would fit right in.
😄👍
A BLT has a place EVERYWHERE
I rather enjoyed "Her You" and I eagerly await the Spin-Off, "Him Me".
Musha is one of my favorite shooters, and is my #2 favorite game in my Sega CD collection, right next to Snatcher which is an obvious choice for #1
Musha isn’t a sega cd game. You’re thinking of robo aleste which is a spiritual sequel to musha
I feel like there is no chance Ultima VI did not get a higher overall score than all of these games, but I realize you are using what contemporary reviews survived to be referenced online, but yeah I mean IV, V, VI, and VII were all like "best RPG of the year/best game of the year" contenders across most review magazines
In todays money Monkey Island would have cost $110 (it was 49.99 at the time).
I got it as copied disk from a friend. It was incredibly easy to copy games back then.
Of course the market is a hell of lot bigger now with more profit that have enabled games to stay cheaper despite larger development costs for AAA games. Cheaper packing costs and digital downloads also helps a lot.
11:47 I am not a Clairvoyant but I deem the risk of Earth getting attacked by Space Pirates in the Year 3000, that utilize giant robot Mermaids as weapons, as rather low.
Others? They don’t exist.
Finally to the year I was born
I was born in 89.
@@jimimarley9088 f. I'm sorry your birth year will never be covered.
MUSHA may very well be the greatest Shmup of all time
& as always fellow gamers, here are some honorable mentions:
Aliens
F-Zero
Mercs
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Arcade & Sega Genesis/Mega Drive versions)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game (NES)
Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon
Smash TV
Super Mario World ( or Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 if you want to get Japanese about this)
Wing Commander
Super Mario Bros. 3 came out 1990 in the US. Should be number one. Oh well, this is TribleJump...
Fun list, but didn't you kind of cheat here in making sure Mario didn't make it? Mario 3 DID release in 1990 in the US.
No Super Mario World? (Japan 1990) No F-Zero? (Jp 1990) No Pilotwings?
Gaiares is ガイアレス in Japanese, which is vaguely like guy-uh-res, or Gaia + Res. Apparently.
No super Mario bros 3? Weird
I was born in 1983, I know how to use the Internet 😂
Musha looks a lot like strike gunner.
I’m glad you’re not covering the 80s games. It’s clear you know nothing about pre ps1 era stuff and seeing you pretend to is basically embarrassing.
Were is Mario 3 and Castlevania ?
"her you?" Astin, it's a Japanese name. It's pronounced hee-ree-you.
Second Breakfast!!!!!
I loved Monkey Island.
Yay! Ashton!
Did she say 'people alive in 1989 don't know how to use the internet'?
I imagine it's people who grew up playing these games in the 80s/90s who are most interested in this kind of content for its nostalgic value. Seems an 'off' and misjudged comment to me. Has put me off this channel a bit.
The list is a travesty. Where are games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Mega Man 3, Final Fantasy I, Dragon Quest II, ActRaiser, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Bonk's Adventure, Final Fight, John Madden Football (Genesis), Wing Commander, Railroad Tycoon, Ultima VI: The False Prophet, etc?
"Guy-are-us"
Quest for glory is great but what's with the gross VGA graphics? Svga, all the way!!!
1990 has a horrible top 10 lol
Love❤❤❤
People alive in 1989 don't know how to use the internet? That's funny...NOT!
38th 😂
First: I mentioned in the 1991 video how these older lists seem to have lower scores in general so the low scores here are not surprising at all.
Second: Most video games in 1990 cost (in the US) between 40-50 dollars which is 90-115 dollars today so current games are downright cheap in comparison. Secret of Monkey Island was $50.
Gaia-res is so good...#5 on my list of "Top-5 Best Shooters of All-Time."
👽
And once again I ask: For 2011, how does Triple Jump plan to address that one of the best games that year was the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection, given that SoTC WAS in the best of ‘05 video, but Ico WASN’T in the best of ‘01 video?
Boys girls and others? Lmao wtf is an "other"?
