Jaap was a key player in the great treble winning team - thank you for the wonderful memories

Stam was a class act, rock solid at the back but also very good on the ball which he doesn’t get a lot of credit for. We should have never let him leave United he was world class!
I couldn't believe we did thought Ferguson was losing it
We lost three years because Jaap left. But what really amazes me is how soft-spoken, articulate, down to earth, no-nonsense persons some of our biggest warriors were. Just brilliant interview.
A great player, highly articulate and a regretful departure.
Jaap was the best CB we've ever had. He was immense in our treble year. Fergie also admitted that he got it wrong when he sold him.
Proves kean had a point about Ferguson.
Jaap was pure class. The only time R9 had to be on point was against Jaap.beast savage
Ferguson got alot wrong imo
@@mike-uq7ni got a lot right as well though didn't he
@@davidellinsworth22 yes I agree. His team selection was always 100%. Best 11 was always picked and he knew what team needed to win tough games ie physical battle.
I think you're underestimating Vidic but Jaap was definitely top 3 if not on par with Vidic. That's my opinion at least.
I missed him for so many years until we got Nemanja Vidic!
Wayne Rooney Man United's greatest defender
Rio was alright ..
pantelisvassiliou He was english and thats the reason why he didnt get Attention he deserved......

shawnsoul4ver it not as funny when you're the millionth person to say it
And plenty of "as well" too
that's not really hard to accomplish
Not as good as Antonia Valencia
Maurizio Sarri & Unai Emery speak better English than Harry Kane lol
Didn't like the way it ended with Jaap Stam at United. Fergie later said he regretted it.

maldini costacurta baresi and tassotti
This is a great interview of a bonafide UTD legend, one of the best defenders to ever play for the club. Kudos to the interviewer as well, good questions, disarming ones at that in the way he asks them.
Couldn't have put it better...
He is a lot more articulate than I imagine he would be.
This should serve as a cautionary tale to every footballer that wants to be great - Leave book writing till when you have retired. You can take notes everyday, but leave the official launch till you have walked away from the game.
We could use a defender like him at United today. He was one hell of a player.
Knight Oyin Completely agree👌🏼
An absolute beast of a defender . Him at Milan w maldini cafu and Nesta ... Impenetrable
That’s my cousin🙌🏼 crazy to hear his stories from the Man United and National team days those were some good times in life he was such an inspiration while I was growing up playing soccer in America
DAMN! That's nice to hear.
Soccer? Thats just sad. He was a footballer. A great one.
Jaap zijn neef in usa? Strange
Zalwel yeah my great grandparents moved to USA from the Netherlands
no way! Jaap Stam is really your cousin?? im so jealous XD
I remember watching him play for Netherlands during the 98 World Cup when in one of the games he got a nasty cut above his eye, and as he was getting stitched up on the sidelines the camera was on his face and the commentator said something about how tough Jaap was that he never made a painful grimace or flinched. What a guy!
That was Euro 2004
That was World Cup 1934
EURO 2000
Would have been the greatest defender in utd history had he finished his career there
Out of genuine curiosity. In your opinion - who is Man Utd's greatest ever defender? My vote goes to Rio Ferdinand. From 2006 till 2011 Ferdinad was the Elite Centre Back in world football
Simply Balling Yup Rio Ferdinand is the best ever defender in our history
For me STAM is the best defender ever to have played in the premier league disregarding games played
Jesper Møller As a utd fan I think John Terry is up there also!
@@ShahmeerSadik @Simply Balling - Ever heard of Paul Macgrath, Martin Buchan, Steve Bruce etc. Just because you haven't seen them play doesn't mean they weren't better than Vidic and Rio.
I love them all but that is a stupid thing to say
Edit: also Bill Foulkes (Busby Babe), Pallister, Brian Greenhoff
*PITY THAT THEY NEVER TOUCHED THE FOOD OR DRINK*

That was all just for Jaap. the Beast!
I didn’t hear half of what was said looking at those pastries. On my way to the shop now..
What a waste😡
What a collosal at the back.
Jipp Yapp Stam 💪
We need someone like him right now!
Not a patch on Paul McGrath, who Ferguson let go!
@@tonyday8782 Fergus let McGrath go because of his drinking. But still one of the greatest centre backs.
From a LFC fan i would of loved him at anfield but what a awsome defender he was. Respect
IS A BIG DUTCH MAN...YIP YAP ...JAAP STAM
Gotta love the Dutch.
They all seem to be Supremely confident and usually pretty arrogant but he’s just being realistic about how good he was.
Not a united fan but Stam was a big part of one of the greatest teams in history and the way he can tell the story in a second language is mind blowing.
I’m just really impressed with him as a man and a human being after this.
A must watch video if you are a Utd fan, very well done. Jaap transfer away from Utd was one of the biggest dissapointments in my 40 + years as a Utd fan .. A very good interview.
ONE OF THE BEST DEFENDERS OF ALL TIME
Good interview would’ve been better if they’d chatted about his time in Italy too though. The drugs ban, the CL final collapse , Lazio financial collapse and playing for Milan, the best in the world at the time.
For a guy that looked vicious in his playing days, he looks and handles so articulate in this interview.
As a Dutchman I have never been as comfortable with our defense as I was when this big bad bald dude was roaming around in orange.
Things are Starting to look bright again now.
Yeap, with de ligh and the one from Liverpool. 2 of the best back center in the world. Also with a great midfield.
He was a rock, always thought we were safe with him at the back.
@@nathangm81 We still need a goal scorer.
I remember watching games back then as a United supporter and looking to see if he ever falls. There were entire matches when the only times something other than the soles of his shoes touched the pitch were his sliding tackles. The man was a rock.
Hasn't aged since the treble winning season
He looked about 45 then!
Na course not, he had those bags under his eyes and liver spots all over his face and head 18 years ago 😂
Remember watching him in 99 against West ham, never since have I seen a man his size be so quick. Ridiculously good defender
Veron in, Stam out. One league title in the next 5 seasons. Amazing work, Fergie.
Toss pot!
Letting Jaap go was one of Fergie's biggest mistakes!!! Top player, top lad and we missed him when he was gone!!!
IT was Stam mistake not SAF
It was a heartbreak for me knowing him being sold to Lazio.
@@grandemys4702 no it was a SAF mistake. All stam did was tell the truth. SAF didnt like the fact that someone had the balls to come out and admit he was tapped up.
MrBounce66 it was a stupid to betray your manager just to try & sell more copies of your book.
Stam never won a league or European trophy again after. While Ferguson won a stack.
he was the manager ! he had protocol if you break you go out ! as simple as that
He speaks wonderfully well and so eloquently. Very impressive !! Over and above he was one of the best defender in the world
I'm very glad that Jaap has managed to maintain his classic 'mediaeval executioner' look lol
Great player he was.
Gutted when he left and even Alex said looking back it was one of the decisions he was too hasty with and he let Jaap go too soon. Certainly one of the truly great centre backs we've had.
He'd still be better than Phil Jones by many folds if he come
back to United.
Chris Smalling and Daley Blind were even worse. But Phil Jones is definitely in the bottom three this/last decade..
Stam the man. He was colossal.
Haha, what a profile picture 😄 Al Jolson ftw
whenever i saw colossal titan in attack on titan i always thought of Jaap Stam
I'm a reading fan and this guy gave us the best style of football we've played in years, now look at us.... Legend on and off the pitch
Best defender in Alex Ferguson's era at Manchester United. I've seen Pallister, Bruce, Ferdinand and Vidic played, but for me Stam is ahead of them all. He was a real man-mountain in United's defence. I was gutted when United sold him. It was so unexpected and incomprehensible. After nearly two decades, I've finally got some answers about what had happened at the time. Thanks for the upload.
@Colloquial Soliloquy slow 😂 did you even watch him in his prime
@Colloquial Soliloquy Vidic was a true warrior, no doubt about that. But having seen both players played at their prime, Stam - in my opinion - is better. He was such a presence in United's defence. Too bad you were too young when he was at the club.
I can understand that you prefer Vidic, though. That defence with Ferdinand, Vidic, G. Nevill and Pat Evra, and van der Sar in goal was the definition of a fortress in football. Manchester United won the Champions League in 2008 because of their defence. The semi-final against Barcelona (0-0 and 1-0) was a defensive masterclass.
@cm. CG Huh??? How old are you?
Colloquial Soliloquy Lol. We can agree on that. Keano was THE BOSS. 😉
Colloquial Soliloquy I don’t recall vidic handling messi to well in the champions league finals lol him and Ferdinand got nowhere near him lol
A small book mistake by Stam and massive mistake by Fergie and he didn't make many. What an intelligent guy. Someone we should have kept hold of. It's gone now, but Stam was great while he was there. I used to love how he corralled forwards away from our goal. One of our best ever defenders!
sir alex was ruthless in his days
We need that kind of attitude badly at the moment, hope Ole will manage.
Full of shite he screwed up with Beckham too Real Madrid said they would have paid 75 million to get Beckham Real got him for 25 million
I reckon he should have gone after the treble it has been down hill since he handed Moyes a poisoned chalice
@@RobbieDunn utter dribble, obviously a Scouser!
@@RobbieDunn they sold beckham and signed ronaldo month or 2 later .... fergie always had a plan
Wish he had won the Championship play offs with Reading, would of been great to see him back in the prem.

Great interview....thanks for that
Stam is a Manchester United legend and I was gutted when he went
If Vidic and Rio were to ever have a baby together they should call it Paul McGrath! McGrath doesn't get mentioned anymore when the topic of best ever United defender comes up because he was gone before we won the EPL but the lad was a Rolls Royce like Rio but also had the heading and tackling ability like Vidic! Unfortunately he loved the sauce even more than Georgie Best and Fergie felt like he had to offload him!
Same with Martin Buchan, he's also forgotten
It said in Ferguson's book that they thought McGrath was so far gone that they offered him a retirement package !
@@MrJobsworth1979 yup, he went on to have a good time at Villa, won player of the year there (with Giggs as Young player of the year). I don't think anyother defender won that after him
Bit weird.
Went on to win PFA player of the year at Villa. Would have been a United great had he curbed the drinking.
He articulates the english language far superior than world-class spitter Carragher
Hahahaha
Or even Ferguson for that matter! :D

His accent baffles me .... he's almost mancunian! Love it!
It is class isnt it. Solskjaer too.
Still love him and his name will always be mentioned when discussions are had about Utd's greatest defenders.
This Guy in defense was the stuff of dreams. Rio Ferdinand at his peak would look like a kid compared to this Behemoth. Just his presence watching him on TV made me feel like steel.

I couldn't focus on the interview at all
Spunk Junkerton looks like kfc
It’s a bowl of scalps from all the forwards Jaap killed on the pitch.

He was exactly the kind of no nonsense centre half that United needed at that time. I believe that the best centre half pairings have a ball winner/tackler tough guy along with a ball playing more creative partner.
Bruce/Pallister, Vidic/Rio, Ehiogu/Southgate, Terry/ Desailly, etc
He would have been the ideal partner to Rio Ferdinand. Sad he was sold when he was. Vidic was brilliant but imo he was not quite as good as Jaap although he was still a magnificent player!!
Yip Jaap Stam :- For me deserves the title... United legend!!!
Great Interview 👏

Top bloke, top player and was one of the rocks that the Treble was built on. Cheers Jaap.
I've always loved the way Scandinavian players learn English in the accent of the area of the club they signed for. Schmeichel always had a soft Manc accent and you can hear it in Jaap. And you listen to some of the Danish, Swedish players who joined Liverpool it's even more pronounced.

I hope he finds success in his future football plans. United make hard decisions but they wronged Jaap Stam and Roy Keane. The trouble is these big clubs are two faced about their players and they can be left out in the cold at any time.
