I just want to say this song completely changed my life. I have some lyrics tattooed on my skin. I love this song so much. Much love to whoever reads this.
This song is not on Spotify so I occasionally stop by this video and inevitably read the comments. This comment has to be one of the best I've ever seen. So true ❄️
My fiancé and I have lived in a small town in western Wisconsin. She’s from here and I’m from Texas. We’ve endured through harsh winters and admired all that we could together, but now it’s time for us to say goodbye to this state and move down south. Despite all the bad times there was always something to keep us afloat. Something about those rolling hills, clear rivers and endless fields of crops. The future seems bright and I am thankful for that, however I will miss being here and all the good times I’ve had. They’re all but a memory now as we prepare to get on that plane.
"Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past." -Christopher McCandless
[Verse 1] You ride in the park and you're peaking Piss pools in your seat She's standing inside but you surely repeat Oh, God, don't leave me here, I will freeze 'til the end Love is love's reprieve [Verse 2] Winter is coming and you're stuck here Oh, and so is she Winter has come and your stacking All your summer shoes Love is love's sad news [Chorus] That was Wisconsin, that was yesterday Now I have nothing that I can keep 'Cause every place I go, I take another place with me Love is love's mystique [Verse 3] You're up on the bar and you're shaking With every grimy word Who will you love? What's love when you've hurt? Oh, you wonder as you see the snow kissed the curb Love is love's return [Chorus] That was Wisconsin, that was yesterday Now I have nothing that I can keep 'Cause every place I go, I take another place with me Love is love's critique
I first heard this song on a cold winter night after a party a long time ago. I had recently met a girl and it was a couple months after we had both turned 17. I was outside with her and we were walking and having deep, drunk conversations. We found a nice place to sit on the curb and we talked and shivered in the cold together. I had saved this song to watch later on youtube and so we sat there intertwined in the freezing cold on the curb and listened to this in silence for all 5 minutes and 26 seconds. The bitterness of the night was cut by her warmth and the music and I felt I truly belonged there with her, more than any other time we had seen each other. I realized there that that was what love felt like (or what it was supposed to feel like at the time). I have loved her ever since but I've never told her, and nothing happened after that night, it all just seemed to dissipate. This song always takes me back to that beautiful night with just us and the innocence and I wish I could relive it one more time to tell her how I feel.
ik you commented this a year ago but I need to express my outrage too. just went to listen to it and can't believe I had to load this fucker of an app instead.
I lost a lot in the past 2 years. I’m from Wisconsin and feel this. I’ve traveled to try and forget where I came from but the truth is. It will never leave me. It’s always a part of me.
Thanks for posting this man, I said farewell to to my grandad yesterday and I couldnt stop listening to this song. Everything seems so surreal and almost like a blur right now, but i've had my family and this song to anchor me. This song will always remind me of him. Love you Gdad
It's kinda like Norway too... It's so beautiful all year, but the first part of spring it's the same with the snow, but then it's all beautiful. It's so much nice nature!
I'm the person that is filled with love, dont show hate or being rude in real life, much of that cause of Bon Iver and how i chose my life to be when i was younger, i hope people that are listning to Bon Iver are the same as me, because it sure feels like a small community to me, and i love this feeling.
the best thing about this groups songs is that they create a certain mood and help you forget all the shit thats going on in your life. Love this band.
im not religious...but i imagine this is what it would sound like to ride the escalator to peace. This song drowns out the background noise that is life and takes me to a new place. A peaceful, simple place.
Oh, Bon Iver, oh Bon Iver, playing your sad melody and weeping thru the strings of a guitar while the notes meander through the air some falling to the side others striving to reach higher and higher and shine! But Winter is coming so such merrymaking is frowned upon. Midwestern freeze in frigid Madison
Why, oh WHY have I never heard of Bon Iver until now?. I'll mark this day as a musical milestone. "For Emma, Forever ago" is now on the top of my must have list : )
Alex Lohmiller hey Alex, I’m from Waterloo and I see your Instagram videos sometimes in my feed. I was just scrolling through the comments and figured I should let you know that you’re an incredibly musician.
Bon Iver went to my middle school, he had the same math teacher as me and whent to the same high school and but the most special thing is that his song skinny love was wrote as a poem in my 8th grade english class!
My Grandfather Roy was a singer songwriter with a distinctive sound who wrote many songs about Northern Wisconsin and the Flambeau river. after he died in 85 I think all of his music is lost but maybe I'll get lucky and find it. not many songs about northern life.
Song of the day 29/04/2017: That was Palmerston, that was yesterday. I'm reading Naipaul's A House for Mr. Biswas and thinking of all the places I've referred to as Yesterday, and the place in the future that'll never bear that name. That final place, I'd like it to be Palmerston, but I've come to know much better than that, that things don't return so fatefully.
Maybe I have a good pair of eyes. Does anyone else notice a male face almost under the left tree branch down? You could see a left eye, nose, a full mustache, full lips and chin. Keep looking and you will notice. I don't think it was intentional, but a complete coincidence.
I live in deforest Wisconsin... Most boring town you could ever visit but I love Wisconsin so much. Who cares if we like to drink and have a good time. Sorry we support our football team... Have to represent
Please god, don’t ever take this off of RUclips. Every winter I go back to this song. It encapsulates what winter feels like
I just want to say this song completely changed my life. I have some lyrics tattooed on my skin. I love this song so much. Much love to whoever reads this.
"Cause every place I go, I take another place with me"
Such a powerful and true line...
If falling snow makes a sound, it's something like that entrance melody.
Daniel Knox - A Reassuring Fable also comes to mind.
well said!

so well said, what a great way of looking at it. i need friends who appreciate bon iver like this.

I feel like Bon Iver videos are the only place where the comments are positive and peaceful. I love it.
Unless its Skinny Love videos. Birdy brings out the hate
this is absolutely true. i've watched almost every video of theirs and i've never seen a negative comment comment
The post rock community is also very positive, try Ephilexia's 'Sun, Please, Explode' for an example of that music.
I hate butterflies.

This is a song for everyone from everywhere, look back , but never go back..
I come back to this song often because of an ex from Wisconsin. I needed to read this comment
nostalgia, wood, warmth and rain, chocolate, small room: perfection
You've got it back, knee deep, all of my sympathy
+ and reading comments like this.
God this song just FEELS like rural Wisconsin. So much nostalgia.

Should be asleep right now... Why does his music have to be so beautiful?!
Why was this a bonus track, it's absolutely brilliant
That’s why 💕
I prefer that it's a sort of hidden gem, in some ways it makes it more special
I lost a lot in the past 2 years. I’m from Wisconsin and feel this. I’ve traveled to try and forget where I came from but the truth is. It will never leave me. It’s always a part of me.
I feel the same. I moved out of Wisconsin to escape some things too and this song hits hard now
Same, guys. I've been in Texas for almost 11 years now, but Wisconsin is where I still am mentally.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, the winter is absolutely the most beautiful time of year here. I adore it :)
I moved out of Wisconsin for work but my heart's still there. This song hits so different now
I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and went to school in Eau Claire. Bon Iver makes me very proud. :)
I live in Wisconsin. Even though I was to travel the world , I do admit even in the winter our state is the prettiest year round no matter what season
It's kinda like Norway too... It's so beautiful all year, but the first part of spring it's the same with the snow, but then it's all beautiful. It's so much nice nature!

Nothing feels more fitting than for this guy’s music to represent my state.
When friends asked me why I wanted to go to Wisconsin: you should listen to Bon Iver more often. I simply replied them back!!
We all have our Emma...
From Wausau, WI. Love Bon Iver. If I heard them live, it would kill me.
