Atilla & Aphrodite - Cyprus '74

After over a decade of political collapse, in 1974 Greek-Cypriot nationalists toppled the Cypriot government, causing Turkey to invoke the treaty of guarantee to restore order to the island only a week later, landing troops on 21st July 1974. In only a few weeks of fighting they would take a third of the island and just under another decade later would declare the Republic of Northern Cyprus.
It's an odd experience seeing historical footage of tanks on exact spots I've stood.

Agreed. but ngl, Thames TV is like one of the YT channels that have like the most rare footage and reporting of one of the most, let's say 'not usually talked about' wars, such as Lebanon(even pre-civil war) and Cyprus itself.

well ,after that ..NOBODY could stop them ..!
from GREECE , in that time we had only a reinforcement of a commando unit ( ..most propably., they came by their oun risk ).. and ..THREATS ..for NOT to bothered them ( the Turks ) doing so..
..So , actually ..GREECE , ..playing the game till the end , following instructions from.. Americans / Kissinger , ..NATO....and ofcourse , ENGLAND ..( that nation was/is behind EVERYTHING )! ..BETREYED US CYPRIOTS , ..and HELP TURKEY to be here ..!..
Finally , those three quarandor powers of OUR.. independence..!..

Gurbet by Özdemir Erdogan - what a choice for song to go with this historical footage. Gurbet translates to expatriate. The song is about the thoughts one has when away from home and family. I can imagine many of the young men in this video had the same thoughts while fighting in Cyprus.

Nice to see a vid on a conflict rarely spoken about, makes you wonder how long Cyprus will stay divided. Also most people probably don't even know that there's still a DMZ on Cyprus. Anyway, top tier content as per usual Major, thanks for the vid and have a good one.
I don't know about the South but there's still even road patrols and UN troops on guard in towns in the North, it's odd to have such a normal place be so militarized. Glad you enjoyed the video, have a good one too.
@@MajorSamm South is too pretty militarized. I dont see anythign changing in the near future.

That city in the DMZ is really eerie. It was such a nice vacation spot before it got closed down. There are videos of Urban explorers dodging UN patrols and looking at all the run down ruins, it's very interesting.
it will remain divided as long as we Brits feel we require the Air base... so forever.

After the canceled landing operation, which was canceled twice, the eoka militants (Greeks) -who is living on the island- played the song "Bekledimde Gelmedin" in order to make fun of the Turks . After the paratroopers land on the island on July 20 on the radio the song "Bir Gece Ansızın Gelebilirim" was playing.

Also it's quite interesting that the Turks before the invasion used -to live- all over the island. After the war all the Turks had to move to the northern 36% of the island leaving the majority of the island under Greek-Cypriot control.
My dad was deployed to Cyprus with the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Thank you for the small glimpse of what it might have been like for him.

@@Alexander29854 Those are the forces which stopped the Turks from taking the entire island.
It was clear the Greeks had no intention to fight. I'd imagine they found slaughtering civilians much easier.
@@Alexander29854 on the contrary, Canadian "Peacekeepers" stopped the Turks from taking over the entire island.
They occupied that airport to prevent its capture as Turks weren't insane enough to attack UN troops.
If that airport had fallen to Turks, they would have brought their jets there and have total air superiority over the Cyprus.
Distance between Turkey and Cyprus was the only thing that prevented the Turks from bombing Greeks to oblivion.
My father was a Uh-1h pilot in TAF. One day he was flying on his mission to Nicosia. Those Cypriot National Guards did their best to defend their positions. and to my brothers on both sides. do not anger each other with bitter, sorrow memories. we are very alike in many ways.
I have a friend her name is Nil, her father is Armenian from Cyprus and mother is Turkish, she has citizenship from both sides because her father is Turkish Armenian, she has said Cypriot greeks are extreme fanatic racist ultranationalists and very mad
My grandma's godfather was a flight engineer in the noratlas transports which flew the greek comando division into the island. They flew unescoreded in radio silience and when they arrived were mistakenly indetifed as turkish aircraft . His plane was torn to pieces by friendly fire. This operation was one of the many unforgiven mistakes made by the hellenic government concernig cyprus. Rest in peace to all the fallen
Thank you for this video man!
Teşekkürler!
These videos you make are really seriously top notch, keep up the good work!
Visited Limassol in 2014. DMZ looked like a city left at peace in a time capsule, save the barbed wire and checkpoints. I pray for peace in Cyprus. Outstanding work, as always
There's no DMZ in Limassol I believe
@@bananabestfruit Nicosia* sorry, Limassol is where I stayed
Reading the description, have you really stood on the places of where these events took place? That's pretty cool man, I enjoy that you manage to make history interesting enough for us to look more into the topic.
Yeah, a lot of the North has stay relatively similar to the state it was in in 1974 up until the last few years. I've got photos of myself standing in spots where, when I was looking for footage, saw tanks parked on.
Anywho, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it's great that I can get folks wanting to look more into things.
@@MajorSamm oh wait did you go to the Northern part? Thats cool
@@MajorSamm When did you go there? I was in Turkish Nicosia 1-2 years ago and it was a pretty surreal difference between the two parts. Going through the UN checkpoint was cool, though.
@@bmtsings4843 same. I also passed the ghost town (in the dmz i believe). Amazing place. You can see the lights on in buildings that haven't been lived in for decades now
@@noahhughes2501 I never noticed that. I just remember that the point in the DMZ where I went through (maybe that is the only place you can actually go through from Cyprus to Turkey) had a little cafeteria or the like still in use across the street from an abandoned building.
Really love how you find more obscure conflicts! Made me do some research and I’m always fascinated
It is hidden by a lot of countries because it was a betrayal against christians and a war between to NATO allies ( and not the first one in Cyprus )
I mean it's obscure to you. But not to those that are concerned. But I get what you mean.
Yet another Major Samm video I'm going to need a little background on because I've never heard of it before. Really bringing out the obscure conflicts lately Major, I'm enjoying the content.

Woah, M1928 Thompson's in the 70's? Quite cool!
Airborne used Thompson in 60's and 70's
A lot of older equipment wa used. We used T34 and they actually went pretty good against american made M47 pattons
Up until then much of the Greek and Turkish arsenal was made up of NATO hand-me-downs. Poor countries, large materiel needs, they had to fill the gaps somehow. Since NATO could not give away its newest hardware the majority of EDAs were either WW2 or early post-war items.
@@becauseiwasinverted5222 Yeah both sides where fighting using the same or similar equipment, imagine hearing gunfire and not knowing if it was friendly or enemy
The turks at that time still used m1 garands in small numbers
Another great vid king

Great video as always, and nice music choice
