Went to my first NHL game a week later, March 15, at the Aud in Buffalo. Sabres vs. the Canucks, wearing the same space man uniforms. A 4-2 victory by the Sabres.
March 8, 1979. Cam Connor's first NHL goal. Lemaire had 3 goals and 2 assists. Linemates Shutt 2 goals and an assist and Lafleur 3 assists. That line had 11 points. Yow!
Habs8691 Cam Connor would score the series-winning OT goal vs. Leafs and the Habs would defeat Rangers in finals for their fourth straight Stanley Cup. It was the only playoff goal for Connor, who jumped to Phoenix in the WHA. He now does a podcast View From the Penalty Box and seems like a pretty good guy.
@@carlbruun7530 Actually Connor scored the OT goal in game 3. Robinson scored the OT goal in game 4 which won the series. That was where Tiger Williams got a penalty and went after referee Bob Myers. This was the Quarterfinals and Montreal played the Bruins in the semis and beat them in 7 games.
1:37 today's players could learn a lot from this play. Lapointe is NOT trying to score on this shot but it is a carefully planned and well executed shot. He does 3 things that are smart, he only takes about a half wind up, he keeps the puck along the ice and he aims for the stick side (so there is less chance the goalie will catch/cover the puck). That shot was intended to be stopped by the goalie so the man in front could put in the rebound. Today hardly anyone shoots from the point unless they are shooting it hard enough to go through the end boards. They NEVER keep the puck along the ice and they are always trying to score. Just like baseball has lost so much of it's basic skill and strategy, hockey has lost many of these little smart plays which rely on teamwork to accomplish things.
i played HS against arlington HS in massachusetts, coached by a legendary coach eddie burns. they were one of our scrimmage teams, so we played them almost every week. eddie's teams won a lot of state championships and they were always in the mix. eddie didn't allow his defensemen to take slap shots from the point -- ever. i believe it was a big factor in their success because there were no booming slappers going wide of the net, and there was always -- always a tip, a rebound, or a mad scramble for a loose puck.
I like how when Montreal scores, it's just the crowd cheering and the players gather and congratulate each other. Now, this obnoxious ass horn has to blare and the players jump around and do stupid celebrations like they just won the Cup when it's November 17th. Piss off with your "celly" act like you've done it before. No I'm not a boomer, I'm a millennial.
i played on a HS team that outscored too many opponents like this habs v canucks game. we didn't yuck it up after scoring because it was unsportsmanlike. everyone knew it was a lopsided game, our opponents, the few fans, and us. i also played in a couple of games for another team when we got clobbered badly. it was no fun and i am glad the teams that beat us didn't rub it in.
If there was was one problem back in that era of hockey you had to tear teams, and everyone else. Like you see here. Habs v.s. Canucks was one of them.
GSA-Its always been their problem. They were lucky to make it to the final twice in their career. Canada NHL is Montreal-Edmonton and Calgary only,Sad but true always been. Selanne in Winnipeg was a great time as the Statsny in Quebec but last a little while.
As opposed to what? Like today with clowns like Dubnyk Mrazek and Keumper as starters in nets and you say the goalies of that era are bad? ,🤣🤣🤣. The only reason half of them today can stop anything is because the pads the trapper the blocker they are all just huge. Let todays goalies play with the equipment of the day back then. I doubt there would be anyone under a 4 goals against.
@@yannyburger you are right that today's goalie equipment is ridiculous. the equipment makes way too many saves. but today's goalies are monsters compared to back then. it was a rarity for any goalie to be over 6 feet tall and now it is a rarity for any goalie NOT to be 6'6. also, today's goalies are very good skaters, which translates into spectacular saves going side to side on one timers. it is my opinion that fewer goals are scored today on beautiful rushes or passing plays and more on broken plays and scrambles near the net. the defenders are too big and they cover the passing lanes too closely, and so many shots are blocked by teams defensively collapsing on their own net. you can pass it around all day on a two minute zone possession and not get a shot through.
My gawd The Canucks were pathetic. Ugly uniforms too. The first year they brought them out especially. Their logo should have been on the front of the uniform, not on the sleeves. Whomever thought the double V design was good had no taste. Canucks teams in the blue, green and whites played better against The Habs. Hard to believe they had a couple of winning seasons. The Smyl, Gradin teams wouldn't come close. It took another 15 years for The Nucks to have a winning season. Laughable.
The 80's Canucks went to the finals and almost won the first two games of the finals against the Islanders. They also had a few winning seasons vs the Habs - in '84, '85 and '87.
They actually made the playoffs the year they got those Flying V uniforms and almost knocked Philadelphia Flyers out of first round. They made playoffs six seasons in a row when they got those Flying V Uniforms so that teams were not do dreadful. But i believe they should have kept their stick in the rink uniforms.
Vancouver was about to start a 10 goal comeback but ran out of time.

The Habs look like they're practicing.
Against Vancouver of course,
The Vancouver uniform designer liked Ziggy Stardust's music no doubt.
Canucks look like a peewee team out there
CANADIANS HAVE NOT WON A CUP IN 27 YEARS, INCROYABLE!!
But the last 17 conn smyth winner are canadian.

The Lafleur, Shutt, Lemaire line was unbelievable. When they were "on", they were unstoppable. And they were "on" pretty much every night.

Who's the netminder for Canucks? Gary Bromley?
LIKE FROM BAKU THANKS
It's bad, when zombies can play better hockey than the Canucks.
🧟♀️🧟♂️
I wonder if this was the time when the Canucks coach said "We look like clowns, we might as well play like them."
I think it was Dennis Kearns wo said "We played like clowns last season now we have to dress like them, this season".
Looked like a beer league game.
Those jerseys the Canucks had look like they were for skiing rather than hockey. The results Obviously showed why ...
That was the warm up prior to the game

An Hockey team against a. ..,
Yes Vancouver is a beautiful city between April and Oct.
Ouch!

It was like a wet dream.
Those Vancouver defenseman. Wow ! Bunch of jersey fillers. I saw players who never played midget with more hockey sense than those...

Superior stickhandling.
Harold snepts got his butt handed to him
Who's 20 for MTL?
I think it's Cam Connor. He'd wear a different number later on. Decent WHA player turned Canadiens' reserve.
They flipped Pete Mahovolich's number over pretty quick
Wtf??? The Vancouver Canucks with no offense and a dismal defense whom couldn't even beat an AHL team back in 1979 days ????
ya that was a really bad game lol
goalies were horrendous back then

The classic Stick in Rink should have been kept. Keep in mind, the Flying V was designed in liberal San Francisco.
