OMC stands for Otara Millionares Club. Otara is a low demographic suburb in South Auckland, New Zealand with a high polynesian and Maori population. The vocalist Pauly Fuemana did become a millionare because of this song, but tragically passed away way too young. His Accent...its Kiwi, that is from New Zealand where Im from. Love you guys Brad and Lex

Everything ended acrimoniously too - Pauly just didn't know how to handle fame and fortune, and there was a lot of bad blood between his family and those who had tried to help him during his career. There's a first-hand account of it, Simon Grigg's book "How Bizarre", but it makes for very sad reading. (PS - greetings from down south in Dunedin!)

The mix of south Pacific vibes and hip-hop is an example of the style known as Urban Pasifika, although this isn't really a good indication of how it normally sounds. It's popular among the Pacific Island population of New Zealand, where Pauly was from, with top artists such as Che Fu, King Kapisi, Scribe, and Nesian Mystik. "How Bizarre", with its slightly novelty feel and spoken vocals, became a huge hit both here in NZ and overseas. That "unknowun" pronunciation is a give-away that he's a New Zealander - it's quite common down here to pronounce words like "growun", "showun" etc.

This is song more of a vibe than being about something. It's a summertime chill song when you're cruising around or at the beach. Just interacting randomly with the circus that is life.
Interesting side note: This is a New Zealand band singing a Spanish inflected tune with rap-influenced vocals. In 1996. So a mashup. Which might account for the strange-sounding vocals. In the early days of of rap, it was a hoot to hear foreign singers try to mimic a "rap accent." This guy is trying to do that while also fronting as a Latin lover type too.
A quintessential one hit wonder. First single from their only album, written, sung, and produced by the lead singer. But a global hit nonetheless.

    • @gordowg1wg145
      @gordowg1wg145 Год назад +1

Not sure about the "Spanish" bit, as such, more of a calypso-mexican vibe for me, and same for the 'rap' - "Ten Guitars" being almost a cultural staple here.
It's not a "mimic", it's how some of the maori and Pacifica sing, depending on what part of the country your in.
"Latin Lover"? Nope, a lot of folks would dress like that back in the day, especially if going into town for the evening - again, depends what part of the country you were in.
Yup, global 'one hit wonder', he did have some other songs but nothing like as successful, even locally.

    How Bizarre / OMC
Brother Pele's in the back, sweet Zina's in the front
Cruisin' down the freeway in the hot, hot sun
Suddenly red-blue lights flash us from behind
Loud voice booming, "Please step out onto the line"
Pele preaches words of comfort, Zina just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, "Is that a Chevy '69?"
    How bizarre
    How bizarre, how bizarre
Destination unknown, as we pull in for some gas
A freshly pasted poster reveals a smile from the past
Elephants and acrobats, lions, snakes, monkey
Pele speaks "righteous, " Sister Zina says "funky"
    How bizarre
    How bizarre, how bizarre
    Ooh, baby (ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
Everytime I look around (look around)
Everytime I look around (everytime I look around)
    Everytime I look around
    It's in my face
Ring master steps out and says "the elephants left town"
People jump and jive, but the clowns have stuck around
TV news and camera, there's choppers in the sky
Marines, police, reporters ask where, for and why
Pele yells: "We're outta here", Zina says: "Right on"
Making moves and starting grooves before they knew we were gone
Jumped into the Chevy and headed for big lights
Wanna know the rest? Hey, buy the rights
    How bizarre
    How bizarre, how bizarre
    Ooh, baby (ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
Everytime I look around (look around)
Everytime I look around (everytime I look around)
    Everytime I look around
    It's in my face
    It's in my face
    Ooh, baby (ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
Everytime I look around (look around)
Everytime I look around (everytime I look around)
    Everytime I look around
    It's in my face
    Ooh, baby (ooh, baby)
It's making me crazy (It's making me crazy)
