  • After checking out one of Sydney's most interesting high floor buses last week, it was time to turn the tables and have a look at what the new generation of best practice vehicles looks like, the Custom Denning Element.
    Although it took me way longer than I had hoped to catch one of these, the reward was worth the wait, and the Element is a nice product overall, with a thoughtfully designed interior, plenty of poke and of course, zero tailpipe emissions technology. I was certainly impressed, and would love to see the Element become a little more popular with operators around Australia.

    It's great to see the Qld Maroons scarf in the background. Your video gets a like just for that!

    Having rode the Element in my last trip to Sydney, this got to be my personal favourite electric bus model. Singapore has electric buses from quite a number of manufacturers such as BYD, Yutong, Zhongtong and Linkker. But as compared to what Singapore currently has, I would say that the Element feels more spacious and professional in layout.

      I hope I get to make it back to Singapore again sometime soon - its one of my favourite international destinations. I was last there in Jan/Feb 2019, just before the majority of electric buses hit Singapore streets. I must say I was quite impressed by the Element, but excited to see what else makes its way onto the market in the coming months and years.

    There’s several Denning elements at Leichhardt that have been waiting to enter service for a few months now, I’m really looking forward to getting to drive one

      Fingers crossed they make their way into service soon, enjoyed catching this one and looking forward to trying more of them out!

    About the Element's temporary withdrawal, I did some research and while most tend to agree it was due to overseas battery faults, at least one person suggested the panels were falling off as they were not bonded correctly...
    These are the first new Busways Western Sydney buses with fabric seats since the Scania L94IBs in 1999, so that's quite interesting. However, I find it unusual that Busways opted for McConnell seats instead of Custom Metro seats, considering this is a Custom product.
    I've ridden the Custom Endeavour a few times and something noticeable on the new Custom vehicles is the increased body roll - wonder what the cause of that is.

    When more are out and about, you should try for a Bustech ZDi, QLD built on the GC.

    A rear window, that’s rare for a modern bus. I wish they all had it though.

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  2 года назад +1

      It is a rarity, but probably needed as the rest of the interior is actually quite dark.

      A rear window is possible on any electric bus as there are no engine components up there. Also makes a good emergency exit. The overwhelming impression inside the Element is tons of light and space, unlike the gloomy dark caves with no headroom in buses with a high floor at the back. All electric buses are able to be fully low floor but most of the ones in Australia so far aren't for some reason - can't break away from old diesel bus design habits?

    I believe they were grounded as some European buses had the same batteries as the element, and they were catching fire over there. The buses were probably rigorously checked while they were grounded to make sure nothing like that happens here. I assume it was all good as they're now out and about everywhere again.

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  2 года назад +1

      That would make sense- glad it appears to be resolved. Better safe than sorry, and hopefully the solid state batteries will perform well longer term.

    Excellent video, but since you're talking about the low floor feature, you need to pan the camera around so that people see what you're discussing. Most of the film is looking out the windows, no shots of the aisle at all. A huge number of people here don't understand what a low floor means, they think it's just the floor at the front (low-entry).

      @TalkingPlanning  2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately there were a few too many people sat in the necessary spots to show that off! But agree that it's an underrated design feature.

    Got to experience an electric bus for the first time with the new Hornibrook buslines Volvo BZL’s!

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  Год назад

      That's exciting! Haven't had the chance to try a Volvo BZL yet. It's the first of the 'mainstream' manufacturers to fully launch a electric bus in Australia - will be interesting to see if it tempts more operators than the BYD/Yutong/Custom Denning/Bustech ZDi have so far.

      @@TalkingPlanning They are a very interesting vehicle, they have a 2 speed gearbox that actually makes a ZF ecomat like sound when changing gears, but it does have some problems, like the bus vibrates when accelerating too fast.

    to my understanding they were grounded because of french buses catching fire with the same element chassis

    • @Steven.Foster97
      @Steven.Foster97 2 года назад +1

      Wasn't the same chassis but was because of the batteries being of the same type as the European bus fires

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  2 года назад +1

      Hopefully they've ironed out the issues since, as there are lots of good elements (pardon the pun) to this bus!

  • @Flippy_trains

    7:15 this was because an electric bus exploded overseas and the government didn’t want to risk running the electric buses just in case

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  Год назад

      I presume that was based on the specific battery type, as other electric buses (e.g. the BYD electric buses) kept going. Lots of new technology and growing quickly!

    Just a shame CD couldn’t have fitted a 3rd door behind the rear axle. The benefits of reducing dwell times at stops and an increase in real-world standing capacity being all too apparent.
    But, apart from the Elements ludicrous price tag ($800,000+ I’ve heard) it’s what the local industry desperately needs or atleast its layout. A layout foreign and local integral manufacturers have failed to offer in Aus despite being fully capable to do so. I think we can thank the local the industry for setting such lax bus standards for decades on end for that. But it’s “better late than never” as they say. Overall, well done Custom.
    And well done on another brilliant video. As always keep up the good work :)

    • @TalkingPlanning
      @TalkingPlanning  2 года назад

      Definitely sounds like a premium price for a premium product, and might explain why the BYD and Yutong electric offerings are very popular.
      The 3rd door would be interesting to see, I suspect it would be easier to do than with a diesel bus, but might be more appropriate on an inner city route service bus (say Transit Systems or Transdev John Holland). I was quite impressed, and would love to see the Element used more widely, but might need to do some more whole of life economic analysis to see how the initial outlay, versus service life argument works out.

      Can't say I'll agree with that sentiment but the ding could get a little tedious after a while.
