The medic attached to my infantry platoon when deployed would carry a pack of cigarettes in his medic bag. He said it was for appetite suppression in case we found ourselves in a situation where we couldn't get food. He didn't smoke.

    ### Key Insights
    1. **Nicotine and Fat Loss**: Nicotine might aid in fat loss by reducing fat mass, body fat percentage, and maintaining lean mass, primarily observed in rodent studies.
    2. **Appetite Suppression**: Nicotine seems to significantly reduce appetite, potentially due to its effects on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain.
    3. **Mechanisms**: Key mechanisms include the reduction of fatty acid synthase and activation of AMPK, which signals the body to use stored fuels and reduces hunger.
    4. **Mitochondrial Function**: Nicotine may improve mitochondrial efficiency, enhancing metabolic health and potentially contributing to weight management.
    5. **Differentiation from Smoking**: It's crucial to separate the harmful effects of smoking from the potential benefits of pure nicotine, which does not include the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes.
    ### Conclusion
Nicotine, distinct from the harmful practice of smoking, shows promise in aiding fat loss and improving metabolic health, primarily through appetite suppression and enhanced mitochondrial function. While rodent studies provide compelling evidence, more human research is needed to confirm these effects and understand the underlying mechanisms. Thomas DeLauer emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between smoking and pure nicotine use, advocating for further investigation into nicotine's potential health benefits without the associated risks of smoking.

I chew nicotine gum for the reasons you mentioned. I found it has a mild nootropic affect as well. I chew the 2mg versions because I get nauseous at 4mg. So, I was a bit dismayed to hear that the results in rodents used massively higher dosages (if I heard/remembered correctly).
For me, I get slight but noticeable benefits in appetite reduction, mental energy, and focus. I typically have 2 to 4 2mg pieces per day.

I’m actually having a stroke from your simple truth - that I’m afraid so many have and never will realise. Smoking is bad - nicotine is not - however, the smoking cessation industrial complex - the academics, heart, cancer, Pharma ad infinitum numbers of powerful stakeholders have CONFLATED SMOKING TOBACCO AND NICOTINE to be one and the same danger…people don’t like to think of perverse or completely batshit incentive structures but the facts are thus - nicotine by itself is not addictive - they’ve tried and failed in thousands of subjects never smoked before to induce nicotine dependence whereby only nicotine was administered - bad news paternalistic heavy handed and heavily monied science - nicotine is a b complex vitamin - nicotine is and always will be poisonous ☠️ in outrageously high doses - but it is not a carcinogen, it is likely to be more health promoting than caffeine (in the fullness of time), it isn’t what addicts people to smoking- science knows this but science and research are so suckled to the teet of special interest 💴 💰 that now - VAPING (not saying it’s not harmless) but simple consumption of vaporised flavoured nicotinic salts etc has become or MADE public health crisis no 1….
Why? If you’d spent your entire life researching, studying, and absorbing the status quo in the QUIT smoking community…2024 and you’re all on the titanic of niche / industries that will VANISH simply because smoking 🚬 rates the world over have been decreasing rapidly over the last two decades such that without a new demon - NICOTINE AND VAPES - these people will be pissing in the wind - the point is like war - enemies real or imagined are necessary to perpetuate the very peoples bs business and even more bs rhetoric about dangers, existential threats, terror, the ruin of illicit drugs 💊 should they be legal etc etc etc etc….
People need to wake the faaark up…ignorance might be bliss, but when the knowledge is available and accessible- not seeking or informing oneself to disabuse themselves of what they know - said ignorance amounts to COMPLICITY.

@@reverbedvonaculardefinitely not easy to quit any form of nicotine. I will say out of any form, zyns are probably least detrimental to your health. If they weren’t addictive I would say best case scenario would be to cycle them similarly to other supplements. Say if you had a big project at work or a paper due and for the week or two leading up to the due date you used zyns, they would be very helpful in boosting mood, focus, memory, alertness. But in terms of dopamine, to cycle it so you don’t get used to only how they make you feel. Unfortunately, they are addictive so it’s not super easy to cycle. They make a very great option to help quit smoking or vaping though. Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for your content. Love the format and length. And the podcast which is longer sometimes.
Anyway, just wanted to say about your experience you feeling sick. I'm a swede so nicotine puches is really big here (we who made you start :P). Those are usually reallly strong. Same with our ciggarette replacements gums, mints etc. Vaping is also usually super strong. All those are for ex-smokers and addicts. Not for health optimisations. And it takes a couple of weeks to get over the sicknes when you are new to it. I managed to stop smoking and went to light nicotine (around 6-7mg/pouch) which is what they call 2/4 strenght. Most products contains what they call 3/4 strength which is about 16-20mg ( like a cigg). Probably will swap to more gums and mints and vaping. Heard really promising anectodes about stopping white pouches and their tendon pain was gone. That's enought for me needing to try it out.
1 gum in sweden is about 1, 2 or 4 mg /gum. Which is for stopping smoking. A person who havn't had nicotine addiction would need to start with 0.10mg or something like that. But it's such a stupid addiction to even try to get used to. People say it's good for mental clarity and anti-aging, but the risk of needing more and more is waaaaay to high. Don't even start.
And the reason people don't want to stop is usually because it's killing the apitate as you say. Maybe it's a lifehack.
All people who switched to vaping have waaay higher nicotine intake, since they binge it all minutes of the waking our. Really addictive and easy to do everywhere. In office bathrooms, in hospitals and all places.....

I can tell you firsthand I quit smoking March 1st and after the initial withdrawal 2 weeks I was starving as if I had the munchies from marijuana which I do not smoke but I remember trying it in high school once 40 years ago, even though I was eating keto way and vegetables it had nothing to do with the habit and everything to do with the nicotine exiting my system and not curbing my Hunger. I fell off the smoking wagon Memorial weekend and even though I didn't go back to the same amount of cigarettes I smoked before I did notice my appetite had gone down immensely just from a few cigarettes from the nicotine. I appreciate you doing this study because I know I wasn't crazy people just thought it was the hand to mouth habit but it was not my appetite was voracious over the past 3 months to where I tried using fiber to curb my appetite to no avail. What is soon as I smoked smoked a handful of cigarettes that weekend my appetite went down. I am still going to requit smoking but that alternative you mentioned seems like a better solution in my situation.

I’ll go months without it then spiral for a few weeks before I go a few months again without it. Overall, I love it - but I’m aware of its negative side effects, so I try not to love it lol appetite does get suppressed with use. Say, I throw a pouch in - hour or so after I toss it I have a curved appetite. So there’s definitely an anecdotal correlation there!

I quit smoking because I couldn't afford it anymore and I became afraid of cancer. It was my only vice. I've already started with the diet and I lost 15 kg in less than a year with keto and IF, the fat was melting away. After I quit cigarettes, my hunger went nuts and I gained 2-3 kg on my belly which I can't lose anymore. I am 156 cm high and have wide hips so every gram shows on me.

Of course, Nicotine is a stimulant which means it burns fat, increases metabolic rate etc, like caffeine. Snus, or nic gum or whatever can be beneficial for fat loss. BUT, if using snus, remember that it can have a bad effect on your gums (as it did with mine). So I won't use that stuff anymore since I feel like my teeth are gonna fall out on it.
I don't know about gum or lozenges but I assume they're better for that.

I have mixed opinions on nicotine. It does cause atherosclerosis. I work on a cardiac unit and if I have a patient under 60 99% of the time they are a smoker, morbidly obese (over 400lbs) or a hard drug user. Now none of these patients are pure nicotine users they are smokers. I’ve not seen any vape users yet but the demographics for vaping just might not have caught up yet.
On the other hand, when I use nicotine I have less sweet cravings, I weigh around 10lbs less, I’m much less irritable and more calm in general. Long term I need to get off of it but its such a helpful supplement that I hate to do so

I'd like to know if there's a tobacco company of any kind, in any way involved in this study, and what fitness products will start containing nicotine as a result. It sounds so much more dangerous than it's worth.

@lisacart4007 I understand that, but all nicotine products are highly addictive, they all contain added chemicals, and the study only concluded that it works, not that it's safe. One of my concerns is also that it will end up getting added to so-called health supplements, like pre-workout and protein shakes. Which would be a convenient way to get customers addicted to them, but do the benefits outweigh the risks, and will we know before a significant portion of the fitness community is addicted? It's very convenient for this study to come out as tobacco use is declining, vapes are getting heavier and heavier restrictions, and teenagers (the age that most people become addicted to nicotine) are starting to get wiser much earlier about the dangers of these products. It really makes you wonder who's behind this study and it's convenient timing.

I have used nicotine pouches or "snus" as its called in sweden, for about 15 years. They do provide satisfaction that otherwise food can give you. My problem however, even as a veteran user, is that they make me feel sick in my stomach if I am hungry. It forces me to make sure I am never hungry, as I need the constant nicotine to feel allright. But one good thing, is that I never crave desert, sweets, or anything "unnececary" beacuse I am very satisfied having nicotine in stead. It could replace a sweet tooth, or help someone stop snacking. But I wish I never tried it because its very addicting and hard to quit on.

The impact of nicotine in appetite suppression and fat metabolism is pretty well document since a very very long time. In addition nicotine is a relatively harmless albeit extremly addictive chemical for healthy (no prior CVD issues) individuals. It is the delivery mechanism (smoke) which is the problem - and therefore having a proper discussion of nicotine and its potential effects, benefits and potential limited harm is pretty much impossible. Sadly this is the case since decades and we still have tobacco around...
Smoking cessation causes weight gain for several reasons. One is that food suddenly tastes better as smoke damps the taste buds. Second is that nicotine's effect on appetite suppression and metabolism is gone - and as smokers on average have less good eating habits than healthy non-smokers the increased appetite and lower metabolism makes weight gain easier.

I want to ask a serious question. You have a lot of videos about "fat loss", but what's the reason one would be interested in that? Isn't fat a good source of energy so you'd want to store some so you can burn it naturally as you do things, or use it up as building blocks for tissue and other things? I wouldn't want to burn fat for no good reason since I prefer it's used for beneficial purposes in my body. Or is it just because there are a lot of overweight people who want to lose weight and this would make the video popular and monetizable? (If it's for the second reason it's OK man I'm not trying to attack anyone here.) Personally I do think losing visceral fat as opposed to subcutaneous fat is beneficial for health overall, but it's not my main health concern right now (I'm skinny)
