It's not every day that the top admissions dean, of one of the world's top law schools, is this upfront about the very process she administers. I hope my fellow would-be Wolverines understand how priceless this advice is: how well it bespeaks what I've observed is the admirable "Michigan way" when it comes to legal education. Thank you for this, Michigan Law; thank you. :) And go blue.

Can you do an episode where you discuss how to approach scholarship negotiation?

Hello Dean Z! Would you say that writing a Why X? optional essay for the school you are EDing to is a mistake?

What about 'priority scholarship deadlines'? If I have a competitive profile, would you suggest me to apply before the Priority Scholarship Deadline or later for getting maximum merit based scholarship?

Thank for these episodes, they're super informative! Does it matter if you apply earlier for an Early Decision deadline? For example, if an ED deadline is November 15, would you recommend applying closer to when applications open rather than closer to the deadline? EDIT: Fellow Bryn Mawr alum here!!

Anassa kata! Great question; there’s absolutely no advantage to applying in advance of the ED deadline-with one caveat: you don’t want something to go wrong at the last minute that means you miss the deadline entirely! Build in a day or two cushion to avoid the possibility of crisis, and you’ll be in great shape.

Would it be possible to negotiate for money with ED? Or does it never work like that?

Because you won’t have competing offers from other schools, we won’t really have a basis for negotiating or matching. But we always work with students and counsel them. And we also have need-based aid, which early decision admitted students are able to apply for.
