Try the sequel out. It plays with a lot more interesting philosophies and timely ideas.

There's also Duskers, In Other Waters, Capsule, Hypnospace Outlaw, and Observation in the genre.
It's weird. I'm generally trying to step away from mechanical considerations in demarcating genres, but it feels like this, more than a lot of mechanics, ties pretty directly into aesthetics of play.

I've not played this game. I've never heard of it until now... But the first thing I would do is try to investigate who gave me my orders. I imagine the game doesn't allow that, but I'd try if it is an option.
