You haven't heard music till you go back this far! Back in that day I was a little girl and was brought up on ole skoo music that touched the soul! Glad you guys are tapping into this music so it's remember appreciate and celebrated by our culture! Pure talent But where is that long note I'm waiting
Oh yes they did. This song is great. The Dells have such amazing voices. This one of those songs that makes you close your eyes and vibe to. Okay Nick, I heard you.
The movie 'The Five Heart Beats' was loosely based on the Dells. When the Dells first tried to get a contract they went to Chess Records and Marvin Jr said Phill Chess pulled him aside and said listen Marvin, I like you but you don't have the voice for singing and Marvin tried to quit the group. They went across the street to VeeJay Record in Chicago and got signed. I think it was Gamble and Huff that tried to get Marvin from the Dells but found that singer was the drummer, Teddy Pendergrass in the group that they were currently working with, in the group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes!
They are one of the few groups who still sound like they did when we heard them from day one. They are also one of the groups who sounded the same live as they did in the studio! That is magic!
Gamble and Huff wanted Marvin Junior to leave the Dells they said they never heard a voice like Marvin Junior. Later on they produced this group who the singer started out as a session drummer. It was Teddy Pendergrass so Gamble and Huff ended getting their Marvin Junior.
You're right this, is one of those blue light in the basement belly rubbing hits, no matter if the long (live / stage)or the short (studio) version of the song.
I sure hope you younger people can get more of your current artists to produce music like the Dells ! Unless they know you like it, I doubt they will ever try. Spread the word !!!! You and they don't know what you're missing !!!
The mighty Dells, this is pure soul, not R&B, there is a difference! Growing up listening to the Dells and other soul singers made me appreciate the fact that I was blessed to grow up in the best music era, ever! (60's and 70's)
Some other jams by the Dells- Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation, The Love We Had, Oh What A Night and I Touched A Dream… growing up with this amazing music blasting throughout the house was everything!
This song was a standard play at blue light house parties long after it was it was no longer a current hit. You could "slow drag" (more like slow grind) for over six minutes.
This live performance was filmed on a classic 70s show Soul! (there's a documentary that you must see). This one is arguably better than the original version, which is 🔥! FYI The Dells are responsible for the one/two punch in male vocal groups and they began recording in the late 50s.
Same song live 28 yrs. later...Considering all are older, they did pretty good...Someone in the background sounds off..JMPO...I could be wrong...Johnny put on some weight, and I think that may affect him hitting the high notes...However, good performance for older gentlemen...ruclips.net/video/cXFJz_RvYOM/видео.html

The MIGHTY MIGHTY Dells one of the greatest groups of all time. Watched them perform live about 25 years ago...They STILL hit and held all those notes
Johnny Carter singing that high tenor part and Marvin Junior with that gruff, great voice and all of them produced The Mighty Mighty Dells.

But where is that long note I'm waiting
These guys were the GOAT back in the day. Powerful voices.
Teddy Pendegrass, David Ruffin all said Marvin Junior was their idol and teacher.
Listen I seen Marvin hold that note longer in 2009 as an old man.. He was 🥶 🥶🥶
Fantastic, nothing like beautiful old time musical vocal combinations. This is soul music.
Guys this group started in 1955 and just ended in 2001 a long R&B history they're based out of Harvey Illinois the suburbs of Chicago

So glad you reacted to this live version of it. It's amazing. Blows me away every time I watch it. There's nothing like old-school soul music.

Sadly, Black America has already peaked. We are less talented and have less scientists and inventors. We are in decline.
