    LONGLISTED FOR THE ORANGE PRIZE FOR FICTION 2012
    Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles's mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

    I don't understand how there are people who rated this book 1-2 stars. Like seriously? Are you literary blind? Did you even use your brain to read the book? No, probably you did, but you don't have a heart to absorb the meaning, the passion and the love. This story made me cry. There are few books that could literally get me tear up like a baby. One of them is Palace of Illusion, which I finished before picking up TSOA and then I found myself biting my knuckle in tears again. Patrocus makes me fall in love. At first, I thought the story was a bit stoic at the beginning, but it is only because it starts with a father/son grim relationship and how the Greek culture was still new to me. But after the first chapter, I realized how much poetic and effortless the story flow even it's written in simple prose. I just couldn't stress how much I adore this book. I still read it until today. I keep the book by my side, so I could revisit the love and passion between Achilles and Patrocus. I cried for him, I cried for Briseis and even for Achilles although he's cocky and self-centered, but he has his reason we can relate to. Every thing in this book is a masterpiece.

      I liked the book but gave it two stars because compared to the Achilles of the Illiad, Miller’s character is a goody two shoes and I can’t stand that. Plato’s brief description of Achilles in The Republic made me curious about him and that is why I picked both Homer and Miller up. But as much as I loved all the romance and heartbreak the characters were flat and uninteresting.

    She's so cute! What do the other commentors mean she 'doesnt look like the type to write such a powerful book?/ looks like a little girl' wtf, the quality of a book doesnt depend on writers appearance or anything at all...
    But the novel was so fantastic. The ending is so memorable and beautiful, really made a place in my heart. And yes this book has made me want to know more about Homer's Illiad.

    When I heard of that book I saw that everyone cried over it. In the first chapters or even at the time when they were living with Chiron I was very disappointed that I haven't cried yet. I hate crying, and I rarely cry. But this book, ho my, I cried the whole night, I cried until I get a really bad headache. And the feeling this book gives it last for weeks. It's been months since I read The song of Achilles, but still I have that lingering feeling, if I think about Patroclus and Achilles right now, I will end up crying.
    The way she write this book makes me feel like both Achilles and Patroclus are my close friends whom I loved and know for a very long time and whom I don't want to loose.
    I don't read any other book for a week because I keep on thinking about this two, sometimes crying, that's how much this book affected me.
    Love it, if I can I will give 1000+ starts to this book ❤

      Let me just say, I’ve read Circe and it was really good. I love Miller because she’s so empathetic, she can write from the perspective of this small exile boy or an immortal goddess with seemingly no overlap in thought process or style. Her books are great, and if you haven’t read Circe by now, go do that and then come back and tell me.

    Finished reading it yesterday for the first yesterday. Needless to say, it has become my favorite book. I flew through this masterpiece. No page was boring, unnecessary, too much. Everything calculated, precised, meant to serve a purpose and to pass emotion, messages. I love the dimension of Patroclus’ character. Absolutely amazing. I loved everything. I am still reflecting upon it but this book will forever be by my side. I can’t wait to re read it and cry myself to sleep.
    If this book were to be a movie.... would be a fucking sensation. 10/5 stars. Best book in my almost 20 years of life. It will be hard for another book to come near what I felt about this one and during its reading.
    When I bought The Song of Achilles, I also purchased Circe so I will be reading it soon enough.

    • @SteliosChristakis
      @SteliosChristakis 8 лет назад +1

      +Emma Honkola As you first read it in Iliad, you can get the idea of friendship. In Ancient Greece, in Spartan societies also in other military societies, men used to have friendships into army and not to have sexual relationships. That's why you can read the book, especially Iliad, with a poetic view of friendship like Spartan society. Their partner - fellow used to be also their best friends in battle, not their sex lovers, as it used to be in the gay society of today.

    • @Emma-il1gu
      @Emma-il1gu 8 лет назад +12

      +Stelios Christakis I am merely reminding those who are reading the comments that although the original Iliad was not obviously a love story (though there have been theories), rereading The Song of Achilles would not be refreshing your opinion on a friendship, it would be refreshing your opinion on a loving relationship. I understand what you say about The Iliad, but I am only referring to The Song of Achilles on it's one.

    Wow I thought I was ready, but even the last 30 seconds of this *press interview* set me off with the waterworks. Pretty sure I can never read the book again, which is a shame.

    Excellent stuff. Moving. Intelligent. Fun. And tragic. (I have spent 25 years in classical archaeology and never read a novel like it). Can´t wait to order "Circe".

    and congratulations i never felt particularly inclined to read homer even though i liked greek myths because i thought the language would be tough but now i feel like i'm going to die if i don't read it so i guess homer will be smiling at you from the afterlife. shame it took KILLING ME INSIDE TO ACHIEVE HIS APPROVAL

    Spoiler:
    Honestly, the fact that I cried even after I know one of them will die hits really hard.
    Because when someone spoils a major plot twist or anything big in general, I just grew uninterested and stuff--like the thrill isn't there anymore. So on the first few pages, I was really expecting my reading experience will flop but ohgod-- the last fucking chapters made me cry like a bitch. Holy shit. I don't cry, I rarely do when it comes to books, but fucking hell this just made me sob at 3am
