Here’s a video from the 1996 Soul Train Awards. And them giving the award to Tupac. Gene Deal said Tupac accepted his award for best Rap Album of the year, but they didn’t air it. But here’s the video from the 1996 Soul Train Awards. And them giving 2Pac the award and lying and saying he wasn’t there, but he was. Gene Deal said Don Cornelius is the one behind the footage of Tupac not receiving his award not airing because of a prior incident earlier that day with Biggie Smalls.

    You got to understand.
When all this was going on.
Tupac and Suge were harassing Biggie & puff.
Also, Tupac was doing interviews for 92.3 The Beat, backstage.
Later on, Tupac was in the audience, when D'Angelo won his award,
    you can see Tupac applauding.
Gene deal can't really comment on the aftermath, he was more than likely gone,
When puff left the awards, he was his security guard.
Audience members claim, to get his award, Tupac did go up on stage, late!
    But that wasn't televised.
Reggie White jr. claims they didn't want death row in the building,
    until bad boy left.
The compromise was, B.I.G. will get to perform first,
and Tupac will get to win the award later.
Soul Train really had to take the L for this.
Soul Train was founded in Los Angeles,
yet they showed the outer Towners from New York, more love.
No wonder puffy and bad boy were able to infiltrate LA radio, and take over.

Here from the Art of Dialogue's latest Faizon interview. So interesting watching this now, now that the back story's out there. Had no clue why there was a smattering of boos at the time, because I remember watching this when it was aired. Makes total sense now. Obviously, going by what Faizon Love and Gene Deal have revealed in their interviews, that crowd knew 2Pac was there that night, but they just weren't aware of the Death Row/Bad Boy confrontation backstage, and Don Cornelius telling 2Pac, Suge and nem they had to leave the building. "2Pac couldn't be here tonight" was just the awards show tryna save face, because these events were tv productions back then.

Don Cornelius did not have too much love for Rap according to his employees and music industry friends who have done interviews in biographies...the only Rap artists he seemed to like ..were Whodini, Kurtis Blow, and Heavy D who had more elements of R&B in their music than artists like Run DMC and the West Coast Gangsta Rap was even more removed from what Don Cornelius considered good music and hearing about 2 Pac getting into a confrontation with the Notorious B.I.G. Probably pissed off but the weirdest thing about that situation...2 Pac told members of his Outlawz inner circle a few days before his death...that he was planning to go public with a Notorious B.I.G. truce because he said that the situation was getting out of control and it was time to move on!

I believe either Lil Cease and/or someone else from the Outlawz did confirm this. That Pac did want to put things aside and move on. Pac was trying to start Death Row East, so he knew this "east coast/west coast" nonsense had to stop. Making peace with Biggie would have probably made that immediately happen.

The idea of a better song is subjective. If you find that it is "Dear Mama" others find that it is "Gangsta Paradise". There is no one who has the authority to declare which song is better than the other. All are opinions. However, my opinion is supported by the fact that more people are listening to Gangsta Paradise than "Dear Mama" because they find it better. Nothing at all supports your opinion, maybe just emotions.

@BIC MITCHUM the idea of longevity makes no sense. Both songs were released in 1995. 27 years later, Gangsta's Paradise has been streamed more than 5 times that of Dear Mama. Dear Mama was uploaded years and years before Gangstar Paradise across all platforms. It simply means Gangsta's Paradise is superior in terms of longevity. Maybe you need a better reason.

Likely. Coolio was making very pop-rap music that mostly white people listened to back then. Among some, he was seen as a "sellout." Black music crowds back then didn't accept bs like they do now. Whitney Houston got booed one year at the Soul Train Awards, because she was making crossover bubblegum music, not real Black r&b/soul music that our parents loved and listened. Back then, there were still standards in music. If your sh## was wack or bubblegum we called it that. No one cared about being labeled a "hater" for just calling it like it is.

  • @sweetlikez

They should have allowed him to come up because this was cruel to what they did to Tupac. Biggie got his award, why can't Tupac speak. They lied and they said he couldn't be here on that night and he was. No wonder why Tupac felt some sort of ways. The should release the original take when Tupac accepted his award.
They allowed Biggie to accept his award for song of the Year for One More Chance.. but not allow to have Tupac in that audience not accept his award for Best Rap Album. That must have hurt him.
The right thing to do for Soul Train to do is not have Biggie accept his award as well. Just to be respectful. It was clear that the industry was scared. Soul Train 96 was everything. It probably the best year too.
They should release the original footage of the his acceptance. I hope that one day someone will leak his acceptance speech clip.

Either Gene Deal was lying or is confused with another award show because "editing out" 2Pac's acceptance speech doesn't make any sense. For what reason ? Cause of some rap beef ? Come on now.
