Alex on Autos is always my first choice in vehicle reviews. I appreciate Alex!s thorough and detailed explanations on all aspects of the vehicles. Though, I think one important thing to mention when referring to fuel economy is what type of fuel is required or recommended- it makes a big difference on the pump whether you’re filling up with regular or premium gas.
What you said in the first 1/5 of the video applies only to the 1st gen veloster. The 2nd gen Veloster is actually based on the Elantra GT platform rather than the accent.
The rear headrests pop out easily and fit by the foot Wells when you put the rear seat down, it's always good to keep a few shopping bags to keep them in, no need to move the seats unless you have them leaned back quite a bit
Damnit I'm jealous. The base engine in a new Fiesta (the one you are not getting, but don't worry, you aren't missing out on much) has 80 hp here. 80. The Veloster is smaller and cheaper than the Fiesta yet it's base engine in the US has 147 hp. I want that.
It really bugs me when reviewers spend so much time talking safety features and don't say if the adaptive cruise is 0mph, partial, or traffic jam assist.
The highlights of the Veloster practicality in this video have basically convinced me to take one of these over a Civic SI. If the Civic Hatch came in an SI I'd be a bit harder pressed, but a 21 horsepower gap is nothing to sneeze at in this weight class, and you can't get any SI with LED headlights or Honda Sensing in the United States so...
2:50 in right hand driving countries, the third door is moved over to the other side unlike what you mentioned, it is almost impossible to keep the coupe like design for the driver if that third door stays at the same position

Its built on a completely different/new platform. The old version was built on the Accent platform, not the new. They use the I30/Elentra GT platform. Also consumer reports just released a video and review of the new Veloster, see here : ruclips.net/video/yE7WQ43AODo/видео.html For what it's worth, JD Power lists Hyundai as the third highest manufacture in quality for 2018... Tech Pappee Thanks. That’s good to hear. I know Hyundai’s rankings, and I really hoped this veloster would have worked out. Really liked the car. But their rankings and what I experienced with the car were vastly different unfortunately.
@@TylerPoppe a lot has changed in the past 3-4 years for Hyundai and Kia. Wouldn't even know they were the same company making cars if you drove. Anew Gen elantra sport, Kia Forte gt, Kia stinger, veloster turbo/N etc
Wedow I mean, I know all their car models extensively, but that doesn’t mean their quality went up. Specifically, if you go to Veloster forums and any where a veloster is discussed you find a plethora of issues. I have 75k miles on mine: engine replaced, transmission replaced, usb faulty, stereo resets if you honk, car stopped driving straight after they installed new engine, suspension on both the front is out. Both headlight bulbs have gone out, rear license plate light out, blinker bulb out, transmission now beginning to make the same noise as the first time it went out. Many people I’ve run into have had similar issues with stereo, lights, transmission, and suspension too.
Impressive little car and much like its Kia cousins, Hyundai does an excellent job of improving shortcomings even within a particular generation of their vehicles. That, combined with Hyundai's excellent record of reliability and warranty make for a compelling package. I'm impressed by the third door option. Some may consider it a gimmick but I'd have to say that the back seat of a Mustang or Camaro is the true gimmick. Totally useless. I owned a Mazda RX-8 with hidden rear doors and found it added tremendously to the flexibility of the vehicle. Must say, though, I don't envy a fourth passenger seated behind the front seat passenger. (My RX-8 had four doors rather than three.) I suspect that fourth spot is reserved mainly for transporting small hostages or those who, once in place, will eventually die of old age. I'm also a fan of the DCT option. I own a GTI and love an "automated manual" transmission (as Alex correctly terms it). Combines the advantages of a manual and an automatic transmission. It's a perfect compromise as far as I'm concerned. I do wonder about visibility in the Veloster. I haven't driven one but when I pass a Veloster on the freeway I make sure to pick my spot and do it quickly just in case the driver can't see me. (I do the same with Camaros.) But since Alex doesn't mention it, perhaps it's not as bad as I think. Of course, many of the viewers of this video are actually lusting after the forthcoming Veloster N. Personally I'm disappointed that the US won't be seeing the larger i30N but apparently Hyundai believes the performance version of the Veloster is a better budget competitor for the Honda Type R in North America. How much of a bargain it will be will depend on whether Hyundai dealers can resist putting a second "market adjustment" sticker on the vehicle. I'm not optimistic on that score but perhaps I'll be surprised. As far as this version of the Veloster is concerned, it's likely to be a viable option for those who want something that looks like a Veloster N but for whom the $30K plus sticker is a bridge too far. And since many of the Veloster N's advantages are useful only on a track, the buyers of a vanilla Veloster may not be missing that much.
The Veloster N and the WRX are in the same ballpark. The N drives waaayyy better on normal roads, has a much sportier feel than The WRX..... But the WRX has AWD... soooo if you have bad weather often the N might not be the car you want
Perfect size car. Just wish the Veloster turbo came with a LSD like the Civic SI. I don't want to pay $30k for a LSD on the N. Really wish Hyundai wouldn't have skimped on the Turbo model. Alot of cheap parts on here. Also heard alot of people have has bad rattles on new vehicles. Seems like a step backwards for Hyundai
28k for an N and it's pretty close to a type R in acceleration.... I don't see the issue. On top of having a way better exhaust note than any Honda product. If you want just an lsd then get a slower less optioned and more basic civic si. At the 200hp mark it isn't really a huge deal. 300+ yes but unless you plan to heavily modify and track your car, it's not a huge deal in my eyes.
I just bought an r-spec and honestly it doesn't need the LSD. It doesn't have the power to justify it, and still handles and feels great. Can't even tell its not there.
The Veloster N competes with the GTI, not so much the Turbo trim. That said, the Veloster N is a much more engaging car and a better handler. Does not offer a automatic transmission option like the GTI nor does the interior hold a candle to the GTI inside. If you want a luxurious inside, get the GTI. If you like cars that talk to you, get the Veloster N. I would not fault someone for choosing one over the other. Both are fantastic cars.

I had a 2012, a 2016 Base Manual that I lOVE! I tried the 2019 Automatic, a bit of a snooze and the inside feels cheap - the body shape is also less aggressive.
Here’s a general question: why is it that the interior trappings, technology, etc. is always of a lesser grade on compact/subcompact vehicles? In other words, why does the size of the vehicle affect the features and interior quality available on it? The manufacturers seem to have all colluded on this point.
Because statistically speaking consumers with less money go for smaller cars and can't afford that stuff. It's also easier to put luxury items in a larger car (less engineering). Then again, that is why luxury brands exists. The new Benz A Class hatchback is gorgeous inside and out. At least in person.
Because normally, in the smaller sized categories, more bucks makes it as expensive as much larger vehicles and most people will just go for larger vehicles when this happens. That's why, unless it's an established luxury brand like Mini, smaller cars don't get luxurious interiors.
The veloster turbo ultimate has a surprising amount of tech for the price. The materials quality may not be the best but I don’t think they’ve skimped on the tech.
I owned a 2013 turbo and liked it, but the cheap interior really killed it for me. I appreciate your explanation on this point, but can't that atleast upgrade the materials on the upper trims and add ventilated seats for 28k 🤨.
Civic seems adult sized in comparison. And a Civic Si would be the same price, faster and larger.. Just doesn't have an automatic. Would def like to try the 2.0L Turbo.. 275 bhp in a tiny car would be awesome.
Civic si is a good 4grand more than the turbo r spec (manual) which would be its more direct competition. If the si had an automatic it would be a bunch more expensive than the veloster automatic.
I've seen the R-Spec get 6.2 to 60 in some reviews which is actually pretty impressive and is half a second faster than the "sedan" version of the Civic Si.
Yeah not sure why he doesn't like the r-spec. I test drove both and ended up buying the r-spec. The car feels better paired with the manual than the automatic. The short throws and the general feel in the manual transmission are amazing...... One of the best manuals I've ever driven...ever

OK. I searched your 'facts', because you didn't even provide sources(and now I know why you didn't) and found that your numbers are based on cars manufactured between 2008~2011. How long ago is that? Can't believe someone is actually using figures from 10 years ago to back their opinion. If you're allowed 10years to search a negative statistics on any car company, there's no company that can get away. You sure remember Toyota killing people? Plus, you said no.2 was Accent, but it was Nissan Versa and no. 4 was Chevy. Now you can't buy four of world's best selling Motor companies, 'cause in your words, they sacrificed safety at least once. You should really go find out how Hyundai has climb up the ladders in last 5 years. Nowadays their cars get 5 star safety ratings from US/EU/Insurance associations etc. For example the latest Santa Fe got safety score as good as Volvos. Their initial quality rank had been topping since several years ago and no surprise that this year they beat vehicle dependability rank against Toyota.

ITS NOT A MOONROOF its a LARGE PURTY SUNROOF..... AGAIN worth a try!
Funkytown! LOL! We see what you did there. Love it! Best car reviewer on RUclips. Keep up the good work, Alex.
I just bought my 2019 Turbo Vtech, can't wait to try it out when its ready next week.
Those wheels are dope.
AndreH I personally don’t like them. Too busy in my opinion.
I remember being SO excited for the first one, then driving it and it have SO steering feel. I am glad it seems that they worked on that.
Alex, big dilemma.. would you get this new Veloster Turbo Ultimate or the new Kia Soul GT? I’m looking for a fun, practical, daily driver. I love you.
Thank you for not reviewing the top line model like most RUclips channels!
Alex! Why have you not done an N review!?
Really cool car!
The veloster is such a sexy car!
Always the best reviews.
How much is a salvage title hyundai veloster turbo ultimate 2019 with 25k miles?
sir , I have a very tough time to choose between : Corolla manual trans ( base )hatch 2019 & Veloster base manual 2019??? you have driven both , which one is better as far stability , cornering and steering feel ( driving feel ) ???which one is more fun ? thank you
I liked this review ! I really love Mini Cooper and I want another one but I like what Hyundai offers in the Veloster
Just watched the video of the previous gen Veloster. Previous gen Veloster seems a lot more practical.
I'm cross shopping this against a BRZ ... so yeah, but I think that is the norm for people who like what they like instead of just seeing transportation. You will like thing that aren't directly comparable, because of so many styling, drivetrain, and other decisions made by car makers.
Really need your "N" model review.......
No mention of Honda Fit, just the Civic, which is not the same category and the Ford Fiesta which is now discontinued.
Well the Fit doesnt come in a performance model. Why would he? Fiesta does and is discontinued but you can still get them used. Heck you can even buy new still.
so, corolla hatch 2019 ( base manual) has: "Trailing-wishbone rear suspension" and veloster base manual has " multi link suspension" .....which one( suspension ) is better ??? or they are the same....also , corralla base manual has Active Cornering Assist (ACA)?? dose veloster have ( ACA ) ? please kindly help
How soon. The bigger liter.. engine??
How soon that 2.0l turbo will be out for the veloster..??
When I had the RED Veloster, people asked me if it was a Porsche.
Hello there and thank you for another great video
I'm looking to get a compact type car that's sporty and also affordable. I narrowed my choice between the Veloster Turbo with automatic or the Honda Civic hatchback in the EX trim.
The Veloster has more horse power but the Civic is cheaper and more refined.
What are you thoughts about which one should I buy?
I had to learn to like these reviews made by Alex. This time he did not spend much time showing the engine bay. (I like to look at it ). But i'll subscribe.
He definelty is more of a typical California EV guy. Hates manual transmissions, ect. Not the best reviewer
@@swanblake sure there are worst . I saw a kid talking about a k900 asking for it to have a suspension like the stinger, and saying that a luxury sedan was boring because it did not have sport features in the body.....i thought he was thinking in a whale tale like a porshe. And drove that beautiful luxury sedan like if he was in a racetrack. An absolute idiot. Man that guy made my ears bleed!
I am commenting because you asked me to. Nothing more, nothing less.
I'm curious if you reviewed any velosters before? My veloster has not been aging well and many of the veloster people I meet are saying the same things. Does this one seem like better quality build?
Its built on a completely different/new platform. The old version was built on the Accent platform, not the new. They use the I30/Elentra GT platform. Also consumer reports just released a video and review of the new Veloster, see here : ruclips.net/video/yE7WQ43AODo/видео.html
For what it's worth, JD Power lists Hyundai as the third highest manufacture in quality for 2018... "Highest-Ranked Brands and Models
Genesis ranks highest in overall initial quality with a score of 68 PP100. Kia (72 PP100) ranks second and Hyundai (74 PP100) ranks third. This is the first time that three Korean brands are at the top of the overall ranking, and it is the fourth consecutive year that Kia is the highest-ranking Mass Market brand. Porsche(79 PP100)ranks fourth and Ford (81 PP100) ranks fifth.
Mazda is the most-improved brand, with owners reporting 25 PP100 fewer problems than in 2017. Other brands with strong improvements include Mitsubishi (20 PP100 improvement), Cadillac (15 PP100 improvement), Infiniti (15 PP100 improvement), Hyundai (14 PP100 improvement) and Lexus (14 PP100 improvement)."...

You're dope. Your work and reviews are dope 👌.
Alex, shouldnt veloster be compared with civic hatch turbo in terms of price and size instead of fiesta and mini? Just my opinion..
Veloster is decently smaller than that Civic
Yeah it's about 10 inches smaller.
This or a Golf GTI?
How does the size compare to Mazda 2?
I sat in the Veloster N at the LA auto show, interior was a big let down last time I sat in that much scratchy plastic was in a 2012 camaro
How about the Subaru Impreza or the Subaru WRX? Size and price they are definitely in the ballpark.
How does this compare to the GTI?
The Veloster N competes with the GTI, not so much the Turbo trim. That said, the Veloster N is a much more engaging car and a better handler. Does not offer a automatic transmission option like the GTI nor does the interior hold a candle to the GTI inside. If you want a luxurious inside, get the GTI. If you like cars that talk to you, get the Veloster N. I would not fault someone for choosing one over the other. Both are fantastic cars.
I love my veloster turbo
I am thinking of getting a Veloster Turbo 2020. How is the ride? Is the cabin noisy? How about when hitting bumps? Any rattling noise?
@@leom00n79 Rides great being a sub-compact car! cabin isnt too noisy. I do have a rattle coming from the windshield a lot of people have experience this too but mine is a 2019 so maybe they fixed it
Looks better than civics
It's a good looking car for sure! -Travis
The DRL LED's look kinda cheap, they look like the 'eagle eye' LED's you can get on Amazon or Ebay. I like designs where they get higher quality LED's to go through a light tube for a seamless look.
Thought the same thing. The original VT had gorgeous headlights. Also don't like the halogen and halogen warm color led DRL
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec it's awesome but I wanted more sound from my Mufflers and exhaust so I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start it's sets off cars alarm lol & I've changed out the spoiler it's the N spoiler it's matched the whole car👋👍🙂♥️😂😆😅🚘
I had a 2012, a 2016 Base Manual that I lOVE! I tried the 2019 Automatic, a bit of a snooze and the inside feels cheap - the body shape is also less aggressive.
Also, the 2019 has less view out of the BACK window.
The Veloster and Civic are literally in the same class in IMSA.
I owned a 2013 turbo and liked it, but the cheap interior really killed it for me. I appreciate your explanation on this point, but can't that atleast upgrade the materials on the upper trims and add ventilated seats for 28k 🤨.
Straight Pipes reviewed the 275hp version cause they could :p And yeah, get the manual.
I thought this was based on a the Elentra for this new generation, Alex is saying it's based on the Accent basically, repeatedly.........
10/10 for the front seats? Are you sure you're being objective?
They are honestly very comfortable. Way better than top trim corolla, civic, ect and honestly more comfortable than and Accord or altima.
I didn't know they still made these
Civic seems adult sized in comparison.
Most reviewers Claim that the R Spec is the best car in the Veloster lineup.Alex seems to overlook it. Why?
I've seen the R-Spec get 6.2 to 60 in some reviews which is actually pretty impressive and is half a second faster than the "sedan" version of the Civic Si.
Yeah not sure why he doesn't like the r-spec. I test drove both and ended up buying the r-spec. The car feels better paired with the manual than the automatic. The short throws and the general feel in the manual transmission are amazing...... One of the best manuals I've ever driven...ever
@@Donkeygrapes, yeah I'm sure that B and M short shifter makes a heck of a difference. It's always commented on in video reviews. Would love to see that shifter as an upgrade on other models.
I like to see golf bag test when you show the trunks on your car reviews.
I would say I would definitely NOT want the DCT. Sure, it's a tad faster, but give me a traditional manual in anything approaching performance car...
Nice video but I'm not fan of this Veloster.... I used to love them but this one doesn't have that wow factor for me
What will give you wow factor then? i30N TCR? That can be ordered for $150,000. Watch this to give you wow factor -> ruclips.net/video/LHLW38656L8/видео.html
Should of blacked out the front H
Yeeeee
Nice looking but it is not as fun as a Mini Cooper.
Haha- Funkytown- haha! Brilliant.
You say you're comparing to subcompact models, but then give the car scores based on the Civic or a Mini which are clearly not direct competitors.
I wish this was available when I was 25 yo.
Too small. I hate being so low to the ground. Nice if I was 30 years younger.
if you pay $50K for a mini cooper I hate you
"0 - 60 in 112 ft." 😜😁😎😉👍👌😃😊
Klk
13:34 $50,000 for a Mini Cooper?!
Yeah. I thought the same. The S line top of the line is just tad more than the Veloster turbo tech.
It has "Germanic" feel is no surprised. Aren't Hyundai Kia done these days by bunch of Germans?
Both German and Korean it's a joint project. The germans tweak the suspension design and tuning. The R&D at Namyang (which partly symbolizes "N" not just Nurburgring) is from Korea. All the engine and chassis parts are produced by Hyundai. Don't jump to conclusion too easily because some german engineered helped design this car that is only flip side of the coin u know what i mean
theodorekell that’s what he said
How much does Hyundai charge you for the rest of the car? Lol.
Stopped watching after 4 minutes The Title states this video is for the 2019 Veloster "Turbo" thanks for wasting my time by constantly talking about features the Turbo model doesn't have.
Looks cheap . Hyundai is known to be the ultimate cost driven auto oem. Cost savings > quality, performance , and sadly even safety to them.
Seriously? Have you ever been near a Hyundai in the last 5 years?
Jis Yang the number one ranked deadliest car is the Kia Rio the number 2? Hyundai Accent. Korean death box. I am an automotive engineer it’s well known Hyundai motor group is willing to comprise anything (including safety ) over saving pennies. Don’t be mad because I’m spewing facts be mad at Hyundai for designing death traps. Anyone who works in the industry knows this
@@ehabaleid1093 Look at the crash test ratings on their new cars. They aren't worse than any of their competitors.
Hyundai and Kia were usually bought by people who didn't know how to drive (cheap econobox, perfect for them), that's why they suicided in them. Those who survived bought more from the same brand so the stats linger.
@@jisyang8781 It's just sad. Many people are against Kia and Hyundai the same way he is. If everyone could appreciate their cars for what they offer... They would sell more than GM combined.
I like them for 2 things above all else.
1. They make interiors that don't creak and rattle. Sounds like a big duh, but I can't tell you another brand that doesn't have issues with rattles under 50k dollars.
2. Powertrain. DCT. DSG created a horrible reputation for all DCTs and they are fighting that. And they are winning.
Their initial quality rank had been topping since several years ago and no surprise that this year they beat vehicle dependability rank against Toyota.
so ugly that it almost makes me never want to buy a hyundai
