Exploring Abandoned Lancaster-Quarryville Pennsylvania Railroad Line.

  • This line started out as the Lancaster and Quarryville Railroad and was completed in 1875. Originally planned to be a narrow gauge route under the name Lancaster and Reading Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1871, the decision to make it standard gauge was decided shortly before construction began in 1874. As with most railroads in rural Pennsylvania, it carried both passengers and freight. 1890’s train schedules show trips between Quarryville and Lancaster being completed in just under an hour.
    Passenger service along the line ceased in 1909. A few years later, the L&Q merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad on April 30th, 1915.
    The railroad was severely damaged by flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes on June 23-24, 1972, and was abandoned soon after.

    (Locations of the pics are in the description.) Pennsylvania was once home to the largest railroad company in the world, The Pennsylvania Railroad. Our state has many active and abandoned railroad and trolley lines. Also, my hometown is home to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum and the Strasburg Railroad. We also have access to one of the fastest passenger lines in the country, The Keystone Express. Great effort was made not to trespass on private property while shooting this video. The reason for no speech or text in this video is because I wanted it to be uncluttered. I miss our rails to trails in Clearfield, PA. Everything in Florida is flat, more monotonous and usually too humid to bike.

      Even so, I’m looking forward to biking the new rail trail spanning Sarasota County. You forgot to mention grade crossings! Rail lines in hilly areas tend to have more grade separation while maintaining low grades. Thanks for watching.

    Really good video, well made. I like the before and after images. I'm always sad to see tracks torn up or paved over, but sections of it look to be good rails to trails candidates. The music was very relaxing. Thanks for posting.

      Thank you for your kind comments JC. The section from the Conestoga river to Millcreek is a good candidate for a rail trail and most of it is currently a de facto hiking trail as it is owned by Buchmiller Park. Most of the former ROW is private property now.

    My Great Grandfather B.F. Shank work on the Quarryville to Lancaster line for years. He was a brakeman and conductor. My Grandfather Harry F. Shank was a boy when the RR was built and helped build the line. He had a camera at 12 through selling $10 worth of Larkins soap along with all the equipment to process the glass negatives into photographs. After Elizabeth College he taught school a few years, was a carpenter and carried mail a year or two. Later he was hired in the RR mail service and worked 31 years in that service retiring in 1952. He told me that if you mailed a letter to Pittsburg from NYC Monday it would arrive Tuesday morning. Mail would be sorted and readied along the way. He lived to 97 and was born in Quarryville in 1892. The RR was greatly Loved and Appreciated by many back then. I remember well when Hurricane Agnes washed out many sections of track and bridges. Of course it was never repaired. Kind Thanks for this great look about a well used line in the history of the RR in Lancaster County! DaveyJO near Quarryville

    We lived in Lancaster for 12 years and moved away in 2011. I remember when they took out that trestle at time 2:31 & 2:32 but I can't remember the name of the road now. My sister-in-law used to live on Orange St. and I use to like driving up Water St. just to picture how the trains used to run thru there. Excellent flashback in time and thanks for your time making this video.

      Those tracks were used by this line but they also continued to the former train station in the city and reconnected with the mainline to the east. That ROW is also abandoned and will hopefully be a rails to trails someday soon.

    After Agnes there was a connection built onto the low grade line near the bridge where the low grade crosses over the Quarryville line, you can still see whats left of it if you take a walk on the rail trail. Not sure if the tracks were still in service all the way to New Providence from Quarryville, but the connection and the remainder of the line was abandoned in 1984, with the exception of the part on Water Street in the city which was used into the early 90's.

    Omg, the added music to this, so beautiful & beyond, very touching, moving ... Please! what is the title to it, and who performs this? I gotta know. It reminds me of past loved ones who are no longer with us ... the kind of music I'd play, while visiting my late mother and grandmother's graves, at the cemetery, etc etc etc, in their memory & honor, with such grace (and gratitude as well).

    The photo of the "last train to Quarryville" cannot be dated correctly. Conrail didn't even begin until 1976, so the 1972 date is incorrect. Plus, I was in college in the late 80's and there were still trains traveling the "low grade" from Safe Harbor Dam to Philadelphia running through Quarryville at that time. Was it just the Lancaster to Quarryville line that was deleted???

    • @theamishrebels
      @theamishrebels  2 года назад

      After Agnes they built a connection to the low grade line at the Quarryville yard. The direct connection to Lancaster was lost. The low grade line was abandoned in 1988 and that was the end of trains to Quarryville

    I see in the narrative the locations and the time stamps. I could not find a lot of the locations and it was a lot of trouble to go to from the narrative to the video. Look, I know a lot of love and care went into this, but if you ever do another one - you need to revisit how you do these. Everytime you switch locations, have a break with a point on the map where you are.., a current map. I know nothing about this train trail, but I follow many.., please take this as constructive criticism. Thank you for your effort.

      Some of the abandoned railroad s are definitely coming back slowly but surely. Like the maybrook Connecticut and the the Putnam trailer and railroad s. Even though they don't have the tracks anymore and it's a Greenway Putnam trailer they are definitely starting to bring the Putnam railroad trains back and they are planning and cutting ✂️ down the trees. I have noticed this last year when they were doing the planning cameras by the home storage Broadway there are some remaining of the Putnam train tracks and the old rusted box fraigt car is there. They still have the old vancourtland park Putnam train station and the dubble trestles one for trailer and one for the train 🚃 tracks to put on them.
