The Galileo Affair is widely viewed as the classic example of a scientific genius being persecuted by religious dogmatists. Yet, in recent decades, some philosophers and historians of science have put forward a new interpretation that defends the Church’s position philosophically and puts (at least some of) the blame for the conflict on Galileo. Is there any merit to this view? What actually led to Galileo’s persecution, censorship, trial, and house arrest? To address these questions, this talk examines the Galileo Affair in detail.

A classic case of postmodern and premodern agreeing in their shared hatreds, while pretending to be opposed to one another. The quotes at the beginning could have just as easily been from an arch-Catholic reactionary or a purple-haired "critical studies" TA from Berkeley. For all their superficial differences, their hatred of the independent intellect and those who use it brings them firmly together.

The Church came to support the Galilean model in 1719 and in c1992 he was explicitly pardoned, which was said to be long overdue but the whole thing was lost in the shuffle
I was going to put this next in the selfishness as a moral ideal under the category of "Truth and Selfishness" But this video was taylor-made for this, as I came to understand quite swiftly. This past Saturday. I was listening to the radio and going through some stations and came to one of the holly roller stations. Here is what I heard: The discussion was about the difficulty of dealing with some of the Christian beliefs and here is what was said "Of course they are hard. Otherwise there would be no reason for faith". My take-away is that the reason for this nonsense is to lessen the efficacy of sense, intellect and mind. Reember in one of her takes, I believe it could be found if you google up "rationalizing catchphrases", Rand said "the nonsense is never accidental". Now we know. This is a fine example of the Primacy of Existence vs the Primacy of Consciousness and why I say "I don't ask to be believed. I ask to be understood. From that, belief will follow"

I think Galileo was ahead of his time , so it was natural for folks to be skeptical of him. However, ill treatment for differing beliefs and perspectives should never be the basis for retribution or imprisonment. Especially, if the person is not violent or advocating for the overthrowing of the current government or system. It speaks more to the paranoia of system wanting to retain control.

@@Mr.WitnessSure, but it is a bunch of discussions and then putting an old man under house arrest.
At the same time the Catholic Church was sponsoring a mass genocide of the Incans, Mayans, Aztecs, the burning and destruction of their books, burning Jews and non-believers in Spain, etc. Even Americans were burning witches after Galileo had passed.

@@Mr.WitnessThe church was doing a lot more force against the Incans, Mayans, Aztecs, Shephardic Jews, and witches around the same time. Wholesale slaughter and destruction of cultures. This was a 70 year old with arthritis and low vision who had to stay in his house for a couple years.

Joshua Was Asking For More Time...
The best interpretation of Joshua's battle and his in-the-spirit establishment with the Lord for more time is that his army was rewarded, for having marched all night and gone straightway into battle in faith and zeal for their God, with a double portion of energy such that for them time seemed to slow down...
You must divine the army of Israel's spirit at that time, and for that battle, they felt very manly, and were confident that, like lions taking over the devil's kill, they were tearing off for themselves a piece of the world in which to live. They were extraordinary men in an extraordinary time.
The clue for this assertion is that the Lord discomfited the Amorites, that He slew them, and He chased them. This means that His Spirit had come mightily upon Israel, and He stands outside of Time. Also that He tells Joshua not one man of the Amorites will be able to stand against Israel suggests that the effect was not upon the sun but upon the host of Israel.
Therefore, this solution is most economical if we apprehend the relation of the seeming motion of the sun through the sky as a function of time, the Lord standing outside of Time, and Joshua asking for more time. If then the Spirit of the Lord came upon the host then they too had become outside of Time.
So, while the religious leaders were thinking in only two dimensions, the unbelievers who wish to use this important historical episode to disprove the Scripture seem habitually to think in only one.

@@Mr.Witness The secular use of "soul" often refers to your psyche, to your mind, to the "I" that is you. Rand used it like that. In this usage "soul" doesn't refer to some invisible and magical essence at the heart of you.
