Would love to see if investing in the upgrade of it is still worth it or if buying a newer used Mac would be cheaper & easier.
I think you can get an SSD and upgrade your computer, leave the ram as is. You can get an SSD for as cheap as a $100 now and keep your 500gb as a secondary drive internal or external doesn't matter. But I def think the SSD would help load your programs faster
Also, thank you for the response, I appreciate it! I’m sorry, I meant 4GB ram. Would that still work okay with a SSD? Also, instead of putting the extra 2tb drive in that you did, could I instead place the original 500 gb drive there? I would really like to upgrade my ram to 16gb because I want to do a lot of video/photo editing. Would the 1tb SSD be enough to utilize the 16GB ram?
No problem, Oh 4 is too low. You should upgrade to 8 even though I out 16 I actually went back to 8 because I didn't notice a big difference in this machine between 8 and 16. So just do 8. Yes keep your 500gb as your second hard drive and just buy one SSD as a main drive

I have a screen flickering issue on my macbook pro early 2015 retina I am not looking to buy a new one I just need to fix this where can I get parts or can this be upgraded as what you did with your laptop?
The last MacBook Pro that could be upgraded was the mid-2012 non retina. The retina version of that same year started being soldered. For anyone curious, the mid-2012 Macs' RAM specs are 1600mHz PC3 12800 DDR3 SODDIM. Use that and you'll be on your way. Make sure not to use RAM from older MacBooks, because they aren't compatible (same for those with older Macs that want newer RAM), even if on the outside the computer is identical.
So I have a dilemma please help me! Both laptops are going to bought used. I can either buy a 2012 13” MacBook Pro with i5 for $300, no upgraded have been done. Or I can buy 2011 15” MacBook Pro with quad core i7 for $310, the ram has been upgraded to 8gb. Both are in fairly used condition and I would have to spend about $90 on each one if I would buy. I would have to upgrade ram on 13” or upgrade ssd on 15”, again which works out between $70 and $90. Is there that big of a difference between the two years? I mainly just want to use it for creative purposes (GarageBand, iMovie, etc) but I also need it for school so it has to multitask smoothly. I want to use it for a while so I’m worried that 2011 will be too old (not eligible for updates etc) are there any major difference between the two. Thanks for the help!

@@j.crandom2077 Thank you so much for your help!
Why didn’t you clean the dust from the logic board & fan to make it run cooler also replace the GPU & CPU thermal paste? With all of that work you still more to do. I’m not sure of the purpose for the 2nd Hard Drive & especially 2TB? Good job to make the most of your older but better repurposed MBP!
Pl upload same video for macbook pro 2017/18.
I would have thought a SSD would be put in the optical drive caddy as well, but to each their own.
How much did this cost to do? My 2011 mac is sooooo slow, I get the spinning circle with every click and using imovie is impossible.
Less than $500. I added a 1 TB SD HD and upgraded the memory to 16 GB. Worth every penny especially compared to a new one!
Were you able to complete the hard drive upgrade? How did you transfer data from the old drive to the new drive? Thanks in advance for any feedback!
@@parkerrogers2277 i had a Time Machine backup and used it to restore all the data to the new SSD. You will need a boot drive (USB Smart Drive) to boot from after installation of the new SSD, and restore from Time Machine backup. It took some time to restore but it was worth it!
I have MacBook Pro mid 2009. How do you think is it possible to change it too?
You can use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to patch macOS Monterey on it.

Hi, the optical Drive Replacement is currently unbelievable, which one can replace it?, what tools I need, can you please post the links for the screw drivers?
you misses to take out the small screw mount from the optical drive. Without it the had disk case will not screw near the connectors..

thanks for the info, ill install the ssd and the ram, ill skip the cd drive replacement 🤟
Do you know if those parts fit a 2009 MacBook Pro??
I thought MacBook Pro early 2011 just could stand til 8gb ram. Why or how did you upgrade til 16gb?
According to apple it can only take 8gb, I put 16 and it read it but I did not notice a big enough change in performance that justified keeping it at 16 so I downgraded it to 8 and fixed my recommendation here
@@MoeNegm Does this apply to mid 2012 models as well ?

3TB hdd seems a bit an overkill to me, but i have the very same machine with the very same ssd and 8gigs ram, and im writing this comment from it. Can you do a 2020 update on upgrade & cost? Currently having issues with my MacBook Pro mid 2011, 8GB ram, 500gb hard drive, only turning on & slowly opening & loading other things.
I thought the 2011 MBP only recognised 8gb of ram!
What an awesome video! Thank you so much!! I already upgraded my macbook early 2011 with a 240GB SSD and a 1TB internal hardrive. I will buy now an extra 8GB RAM and this leather case which is legit!

I have a screen flickering issue on my macbook pro early 2015 retina I am not looking to buy a new one I just need to fix this where can I get parts or can this be upgraded as what you did with your laptop?
According to the Intel website those CPUs support up to 32gb ram. Has anyone tried the 16gb ram modules available from ebay?
32GB on this machine will be wasted money, unless you run three or four very large apps at full-tilt at the same time.
16GB is more than enough.
Bro! Can't believe I happened to randomly stumble across your video! Wahoah!!!
oh sorry I thought you were a guy i knew from my uni in the UK
Why not using also a SSD to replace optical drive?
Why do you now recommend 8G of RAM instead of the 16G of RAM that you installed in the video?
I am wondering the same thing!

According to Apple, the 2011 MBP only supports up to 8 Gb of ram, they say you can put 16 but the cpu can only read at 8 Gb.

Nope. Your Windows SSD remains C. New drive will likely show up in your Explorer as D.
how do u run win 10 on your 2009 mac book pro? i tried to do the same, but every single time i installed the win 10 i would get an error saying it needs to be repaired when the laptop is restarted/turned on. happens every time... i ended up installing windows 7 ultimate instead. i used a usb with iso of win 10 to install it. also used bootcamp...never worked out.
