- 10 days after Hurricane Ian we were able to see some of the damage on Bonita Beach Road and Hickory Blvd in Bonita Beach, Florida.

Thank you for posting this. I was the FedEx Express driver in Bonita from 2000 till 2005 when I retired. My route was Bonita Beach Rd. west of 41 all the way to Big Hickory Island. Watching this breaks my heart. I remember the people who lived in those homes. Docs was my favorite hangout. This is sad. You made a very respectful video and I appreciate it.
Doc's is the best! I was by there today and they are working hard on building the bottom level back! Thank you for your support Bobby!

Forty year Ft.Myers resident here. As much as all the damage from hurricane Ian, the guilt feelings for all that lost life and mine being spared. Although it's not in the immediate future, but good will come out of this. Southwest Floridian's are so resilient, and proud of our hometowns. We will rebuild, and we will be alright 👍 Thomas Edison once said, " there is only one Ft.Myers, and 90 million people are gonna find out".
Henry I feel that way too -- and that's a great positive mindset. I look forward to recording a one year update and seeing how much progress has been made.

I managed the fish house on Bonita Beach Road for 11 years. It has been through so many hurricanes and even though it is a little old building, it’s still standing strong. Unbelievable.
We love the fish house! It looked pretty good from my quick drive by.
God isn't mad at you haha. Thank God you're OK. He really showed his mighty power in that storm and having mercy on some!
I really liked your video Lindsay. We were in Naples at Christmas and wanted to go out to Sanibel but it wasn't open to the public yet. All the damage is terrible to see since we went through the same thing in 2018 with Hurricane Michael in Mexico Beach. When hurricane Katrina hit Gulfport Mississippi, I was there the next day to protect the city from looting and patrolled neighborhoods. I live in St.Joe Beach now which is east of Panama City Beach. Hope we never have to experience this destruction again in our lifetime.
It sounds like you have a lot of hurricane experience. This was my first ☹️ thank you for helping those who were effected by Katrina!
Thanks for the video. We own a timeshare at Bonita Resort&Club on the north end of Bonita Beach Road. We are original owners and have visited almost every summer for 41 years. Our two sons always called the resort “ The New House.” That area is so special to us. We look forward to your next videos.

@@LindsayLola_ We visit in the middle of June each year. We honeymooned at the Bonita Beach Tennis Club in 1981. That’s when we bought our timeshare at Bonita Resort& Club. We see the same families every year and enjoyed watching the children of the different families grow up. It is a very special place for us and hopefully we can make our annual visit next June. We live in Maryville, Tenn.
Summer is my favorite time here. I have a Beach and Tennis video up as well.
William, my sister & I own a week at Bonita Resort & Club in mid-Nov; I've been going there since the late 90s. It's a wonderful place to enjoy. I hope they'll be able to recover. So worrisome to see the damage.
@@debnordman1640 The damage is so unbelievable. After seeing the photos on the club website, I worry about structural damage to the pool deck and even to the building. Hopefully all can be restored.

IVAN was a beast! So much destruction, I wonder how many will stand by and rebuild, how many businesses will be able to reopen. So much sand, it reminds me of being up north with snow. That storm just would not go away, that wind howling, the water. Everyone's lives disrupted. Some places look like a ghost town.No place for vacationers this year, we need to heal both physically and mentally. Thank you for the video, no need for everyone going and rubber necking.

I did hear from a lady who is a server on Marco. She said they are pushing hard to get things in a good spot for tourists and encouraged people not to cancel reservations. I’m going to go check it out next week and see how it’s looking.

Thank you for posting this. I lived in Southwest Florida (Estero then Bonita) for 30 years and I can’t even tell you how many times I made this drive down Hickory Road. It was really nostalgic seeing all of these houses that I remember (like the house with the pool cage in the front yard). Even though it was so sad to see the condition of the little town that I love, thank you for posting this.❤

Seems newer construction built with new codes are the reason these structures are still standing!! I’ve seen photos/vids where older structures are leveled to the ground!! Also seems metal roofs take a beating but keep on ticking!!
That does seem to be the case Judy, but gosh I just love the charm of those beach bungalows.
Good to see new construction did ok. The new construction code developed after hurricane Andrew works but sadly it couldn't be retroactive so old house were on borrowed time (and thats why FMB was destroyed)

Yes, the newer builds fared better than the cute older beach bungalows I'm afraid.
Sorry to say, when one doesn’t have enough capital to upgrade the devastation was to be expected from the unknown storm that may be coming.

Storm surge of over 11 hours with water reaching into the 3rd floor of the Lani Kai. 10 foot per floor ceiling height to give an idea of just how much water that would be, plus the ground floor. Diamond Head resort is leaning against the condo to its right. The beach will never be the same I'm sorry to say.
It's so very sad, it won't be the same but I have hope it will be rebuilt and still be enjoyed by many.

Yes, the storm surge brought a lot of sand in. There is so much devastation even the houses still standing have lost the majority of what was inside because of how high the water was.
23 foot waves captured at buoy… that was a tsunami that made it as bad as it was

Thank you Kim! My parents own a property at the start of Hickory Blvd and my grandparents owned a home at the end of the road before the bridge. I have traveled the road MANY times. Although the area has changed a lot over the last 30 years I never thought it would look like this. The cleanup will take a very long time.

When my brother and I were young we would pick out our favorites! Now my kids do it, or did it, they will again.
Wow, sand piles look like winter snow in Boston. Can someone explain to me that a few houses don't appear to be on pilings or did they wash away? As for me I'll take 18 ft pilings, with a 30in cement sub floor and go from there. It's a dream home, I want it to stay around, I'll have an elevator! These homes are beautiful and still there, but they're wet, smelly and molded. Paradise with one draw back, hurricanes!! Been thru a couple glad not this one. May your soul be calmed by the ambience and the sounds of waves hitting the shore, peace to all impacted.

They washed away. Some on the bayside into the bay. I wish it were restore with all mangroves and pines again and no building. Like it used to be.

Oh that orange Plymouth i think its a supper bee .i heard that the owner had it and a 2nd one up on car hoist in his garage up to the hoist extent,and the water still lifted them off and out off the garage,makes me wonder why he had the garage doors open and how did he manage to keep them from being swept away.but all things considered it looks like it fared not to badly.
It was a really cool car. My only guess is that the storm surge was forecasted at the end to be very high so perhaps get everything off the ground and open the garage door to move the water thru instead of backing it up under the house? Amateur take on it as this was my first hurricane.
@@LindsayLola_ Ya possible that's why he had the doors open hmm wonder if he had a rope tied to each to keep them being swept away..Say i just thought in hind site perhaps he should have strapped them to the hoist itself that way they would be pressed up to the ceiling or wash out of the garage water damage yes but the integrity of the body would have been kept.but again in hind site.
maybe that area should not be lived in, but only for seasonal tourists. buildings only made of structural concrete on deep pillars, raised above storm surge, and designed for cat 5 winds. bury all electrical underground. no stick shaks and no trailer parks.

As a Minnesota native, I felt this way too when I saw them.

It did, it was brought in by the storm surge.
hmm im visualizing the big dump trucks but have maybe a 2'' metal grids over them so as you dont want crap or steall or garbage being dumped out along with the sand in the ocean ,then the bid excavators or what have you can run the sand through the grids (or is that grades) then the none sand can be removed then the sand then be loaded on barges and dumped back in the ocean i know sometimes i think to much lol.
Its crazy seeing these large piles of sand on the side of driveways and the road .It almost looks like a snowstorm went through there

Seems most homes on high stilts held on and the massive homes considering the power of Ian ! It’s sad all the sand it reminds me when NE gets a not Easter there’s no where to put the snow

I did look at the park's Facebook page last week. Gazebo and the bathrooms up on stilts are gone, as well as hurricane charley's. It looks like the gift shop up front is badly damaged. I don't remember seeing a picture of the fishing pier but I can imagine it isn't in good shape. No pictures of the bridges were up yet. They post quite often though.

Thank you. The volunteers have been appreciated. The kindness and care of the volunteers won’t be forgotten. I have Volunteerd and never thought I’d be on the receiving end. It’s hard to put into words the gratitude I have is very emotional.They showed up when I needed them both mentally and physically. umm as a bicycle repair person id like to know why the bicycles are left at the side of the driveways in with the garbage ? as waters not going to hurt them although i know its salt water but im sure they ed be fine once ya take em out of the sand and give it a rinse .

@@LindsayLola_ Well ya, think about it anywhere there are bearing cages,.they er internal and packed with grease,so that leaves the chain and the derailleur and the frame itself ,so brush any sand off the chain and derailleur then run some chain oil on the chain and a squirt in the derailleur cog wheels ,then lastly the frame ,wipe off any sand and being water is in short supply spray on so goos old WD40 then give it a wipe and its should be good to go..Hmm now possible the gear and brake cables could develop seizing down the road but that two is an easy fix.
@@honda200twinstar3 hi there. I saved my messed up bikes because I’d like them fixed up for the community off old 41 or the LDS volunteers in Immokalee(they said they could use them)- that their main transportation is bicycle.
When I find a bike that someone throws away I save it. Do you live nearby? If so- would you be willing to take the bikes and fix them for the people who really could use them. I have collected 5.

Judy, to many, the area is worth it. There aren’t many places you could live that are free from natural disasters. Between tornados, floods, fires, earthquakes, and snowstorms…we are all always in harms way.

Artificial dredged beach sand sent 1/4 mile East over roads, homes and businesses by the storm surge? A temporary setback for the owners of these mansions?
A lot of those mansions are vacation rentals enjoyed by people from all over. There are also small beach homes, restaurants, bait shops, boat rentals, and beach access points along this road. There was a trailer home community that is completely gone, homes floating in Estero Bay or piled up by the water. Lives were lost. It’s much more than a temporary set back for many people.

I hope all that metal sitting at businesses and people's curbs is not being sent to a landfill when the state could come in and recycle it all. Plus, all those stainless-steel racks from businesses, all they need is to be sanitized, there's nothing wrong with them. How wasteful. Oh, and all those solid wooden chairs at the beginning, again, all they need is to be sanitized, then refinished.
Businesses must pay for private companies to clear their debris. Neither the city or FEMA will pay for it. Sorry but that’s just wrong.
People are shell shocked. You can’t imagine the devastation. The wooden items may have been under water and can’t be fixed. It will take years to recover. Yes, some people may take advantage. They did in Hurricane Andrew with all the false claims, but it truly is overwhelming emotionally.
I agree Linda. I filmed this 10 days after the hurricane. That equipment and chairs could have been covered in salt water the majority of the time.
