Long story short - Ronnie's mom wasn't in his life because of drugs, Ronnie himself struggled with addiction, and the part at the end with his daughter Willow represented his fear that she could follow that same path.

Ronnie has explained many times, he respects the fact that Religion works for other people and has saved his dad's life personally (the mother of his daughter is also a Christian). He's not an atheist, I think he Wants to believe, he's just had such a rough life it's hard for him to accept the Blessings he's had.
That’s completely understandable
I can entirely relate to Ronnie in how he believes it's fine for others to believe, but if Ronnie wanted to believe, he'd say as much. It took me 50 years before I lost my religion. Now that I'm out of it, I have no desire to ever believe again but I'm glad it helps others.

Trev I really think now this is just my personal opinion why Ronnie questions God is because he lost his brother and just all the rough times his been through. Well said, when i would refuse to acknowledge God as God i became futile in my thinking and that results in me thinking God exists for me and my happiness and freedom. If that was true, He wouldn’t be God, but He would be my genie, and i his master. That ain’t Bible.
Many of us have done our own deep dive into the Bible and our findings end up causing our disbelief, not how hard life has been.
That’s a good point, and I’m sorry to hear that. Truly digging in and understanding the original language the text was in and the original context has solidified my faith more and more. The prophecy written before Jesus and fulfilled by Jesus alone is pretty nuts.

You said it very well and makes a lot of sense. Is sad that most of the most amazing artists bring us salvation through the cost of so much personal suffering. He does have a story to tell and he is saving lives through his art, you are right on that. I really like the way you pay attention to what artists are doing. They are both Ronnie, just different time frames. He sees good and bad in both versions. Ronnie wants to kill that version of him and forget the past, but its all a part of who he is. The song is about him trying to better himself, and changing the bad parts and building up the good. The drug addict version isn't all bad. The commitment and drive to keep getting high can be channeled into his work and make it even better. By this point, he is aware that he is the sum of his experiences and needs all aspects of his life, because that's what made him the man he is today.

I knew that line would strike a chord, but good call suggesting to go back and look at the Popular Monster reaction. I will say, I think Ronnie doesn't have a true sense of the meaning of freedom or else he wouldn't equate with God's existence. I mean, what loving parent gives their child unrestricted freedom with no boundaries? I think that one line is just one end of the spectrum of Ronnie's struggle to understand his role/relationship with a Creator, since many of his other songs talk about that struggle.
I truly hope he's saved and believes in God.😢 I'm pretty sure that's going to be the only way I will ever get to meet him in this life,will be in Heaven😊 I really need that to look forward too😂😂😂🤞🤞
