I could not agree more. Mark and Sam provide us the type of first hand experience, knowlege and insight that you either pay a lot of money to hear about once in a class. Or lucky enough to shoot with some of the best shooters and they pass some knowledge onto you. Most of us will never have the opportunity to shoot at the distances they do. But the humble methodical process they present in everyone of their videos we can all learn from.

I’m just getting into long range precision (500-1000 yards starting out) but I watch all these videos on these incredibly long shots. I chose 6.5mm Creedmoor fed through a BadRock Precision “South Fork” rifle. Cost me like $5k to buy everything I needed on the rifle and optic end and I just bought 8 boxes of all the best match grade ammo I can find. Can’t wait to take it out and get some data.

I love your unbiased comparisons between cartridges. Your 6.5saum vs 6.5-06AI helped me finally decide on a hotrod 6.5mm.
I'd love to see a 7mm-300win mag vs 7mm-300prc (I think that's basically a 7mm LRM) comparison. I'm interested to see what kind of performance they have vs thier 30cal parents also.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

Excellent video as always, I have also seen really good performance from a long barrel with my 300 Win Mag. My twist was a little too slow for the heavier bullets but performance with 210gr VLDs from 30" tube and Retumbo powder has been phenomenal, getting 3100ft/s from a minimum powder load. When I'm in a bind and can only grab factory ammo, I'm even confident shooting Superformance with 180gr SSTs as they chronographed 3320ft/s from the 30" barrel. That caliber just loves long barrels.

I’ve learned more from you Mark than a all the books I’ve read and about many things. You said a cartridge in 7mm that had a case capacity of around 10 grains more than the 7mm Remington Magnum might be the ideal cartridge for ELR. That really me wondering about a rifle I back ordered from Eurooptic in 28 Nosler. Searching Google I found the Remington 7mm Magnum holds 82gr of H20, 28 Nosler 100.7gr H20. Then I searched all my reloading manuals and found in the Nosler manual using a 168gr bullet and Reloader 25 that a 100% case fill in Remington 7mm magnum is 69gr, 100% in 28 Nosler is 85gr. Not that we could safely load that much R-25 but the capacity of the cases. I just found the same powder - Bullet weights for both cartridges. The max load listed in 7mm Rem Mag is 70gr @ 100% case fill and 28 Nosler max load listed is 79gr @ 94% case fill. That’s still mighty close to what you predict might be an excellent ELR cartridge. I’d imagine that I’m missing something here but I thought I might ask you if you’ve already researched 28 Nosler. The main reason I ordered the rifle is watching what you have done with your 7mm Remington Magnum. Thank you for your work, I’ll be ordering another bag rider, your muzzle brake and bipod system as soon as I get the rifle and can measure the distance from the bottom of the fore grip to top of the barrel. I don’t know if I’ll need bipod component D or C yet.

Sorry for the silly question Mark...
But if the chamber is extended/lengthened to accommodate a longer projectile, would that not be creating a *new cartridge?* Would a designator like (E) or (L) after the cartridge name be appropriate, and stamped onto the barrel?
    Cheers for your thoughts Mate!

Good breakdown of the road your on. For finding the wind at 200' there is always tracking a helium (or hydrogen) balloon, but that might be more time and trouble than just taking an extra shot. :))

Excellent. I am especially interested in analytical/quantitative/probability information...for example, your candid information on lack of subsonic trace, height above the ground for bullet travel, number of shots to get on target, etc. Bullet design...long heavy high sectional density v. shallow boat tail, shorter bullet, in terms of transonic stability. I know your earlier videos addressed this issue with a bit of your skepicism . . . bullet design is very interesting.

Did I hear you say you’re developing your own bullets? Did you get the bug and equipment to custom swage your own jacketed bullets like I did decades ago? I’ve developed my own bullets using different die lengths and designs for varying thicknesses of copper cups, leads, alloy’s and even steels like tungsten wafers etc. In the late 70’s. It is expensive. I was tutored on making lighter bullets at a given length and longer bullets at a given weight. It’s neat to hear I’m not the only “eccentric” minded shooter out there. Even if your having a shop make you custom designed bullets that is great too. I enjoy listening to you discuss your journey in developing and the lessons you learn and info you find to be different from what “everyone” says. I swear you sound just like me 30 years ago. People I spoke to back then, who did more reading than doing, said the same stupid nonsense I can tell you’re getting now. I’m sorry you’re dealing with stupid peoples comments who aren’t even doing what you guys are actually doing. You’re on the right track, and I enjoy watching the loops your shooting.
Just some old data. I’ve gone through the combustion of shorter fatter cases and longer slimmer cases and the different combustion rates and pressure curves of different powders also. Your right on the money with your 300 Win Mag, 7 Mag and Rum and Norma cases burning 80 to 100 grains of powder with 29 to 30 inch barrels. The last three I built had 29 1/2 inch barrels. The longer cases like the old 6.5 and 7X300 Weatherby or 338 Lapua, 416 or 375 or other wildcats with longer powder columns in excess of 110 grains of powder or more, 32 to even 36 inch barrels proved better. Plus, if no taper, when you shout out the throats, you can cut them down and re-chamber them. Well I’ve talked too much as I tend to do. Cheers.

Hi mark, not exactly ELR related but what group size would you think is adequate if I want to shoot out to 750 yards with my 7mm rem mag in a hunting application? I’m using 168gr ABLR’s at 2940fps and getting 3/4 inch groups but sometimes 1-1.5 inches. I only got the gun last week but after 100 rounds the 168’s don’t seem to want to get much better than 3/4 inches. Got some other bullets shooting 1/2 inch but they aren’t the best for LR. Also another question, does 1.5 MOA at 100 yards equate to 1.5MOA at 700 yards? I’d love to see a video on what you think, I’ve seen conflicting opinions online, some people saying their gun shoots better MOA wise at 200 yards vs 100, they say the bullet doesn’t “ settle “ until past 100 yards and they prefer to shoot at 200..

Do you feel the Belted mags are a bit harder to deal with reloading wise? I tended to steer clear of them due to this. @markandsamafterwork  4 года назад

Well lots and lots that I did not mention, the 300wsm would be a good cartridge, and would work fine for ELR, probably not quite as capable as the 300wm for ELR/ULR from what I have seen, but depends on your needs, Cheers

Thanks for the reply Mark. My application would be more towards hunting in the open plains of the Karoo, and non competitive LR target shooting for fun. Looking for something that has less recoil than the 300WM but not a lot less power. Cheers 🍻

    • @markandsamafterwork
      @markandsamafterwork  4 года назад

Well recoil is a result of the acceleration of the bullet, so power, bullet weight and a little to do with burn rate, to get less recoil, you need a little less of one or the other..... but from what I have heard the WSM should do that well, but that is not an ELR conversation so I will leave it there, lol, Cheers

I’ve not done a 7 Prc but I have done a 28” 8 twist 7 saum throats to 3.115 oal with 175 eldx (I hunt with these guns) and a 27” 8 twist 28 nosler standard throat for a friend The saum runs 3050 FPS with the 175 , I’ve not done any load developing with the 28 nos because it shot factory loaded 162 eldx’s into one hole but the 162s Crono’d at 3240 FPS (Magnetospeed) I didn’t think that was a significant difference in speed considering the difference in powder and bullet weight and one inch of barrel should probably only be good for 30-50 FPS I think that in order to get the most out of the prc you will have to single round feed it because of c.o.a.l. And find a powder that is optimal for the barrel length...with my saum it was 4831sc which was a little faster than I thought I should be at 🤷‍♂️ but it zips along and group’s nicely I’m sure you have far more experience with these things than I do but I figured I’d share my experience I’m not sure what the perfect 7mm is but I feel it is something between the saum and nosler and I’m sure that the 7 mm bore is the most sensible bore size for ELR as it strikes a nice balance between B.C. and recoil that makes the sport enjoyable! Just my 2cents keep shooting and sharing I really enjoy your content!!!

And I thought the PRC was specifically designed for the heavier bullets as opposed to the winmag?

    • @markandsamafterwork

Well from what I understand it's basically a 375 Ruger case necked down to 30cal, and works well as described in the video, but no doesn't shoot heavy bullets better than a 300wm, not from what I have seen, Cheers

    Dear M+S..
Am watching and studying your videos more and more. But having come to the channel.. When it's very popular and has many vids..
Have you considered numbering your videos.. So they are more easily retreived and found.. maybe a list of numbers and subjects created?
I wanted to say this privately for fear of looking stupid.. But couldn't work out how!!
    Maybe there is a list?
Anyway.. Am a engaged fan 👍

Mark, when you find the best cartridge, are you going to push it out to 7,000 or 8,000 yards? I was just reading that a fellow set a world record at 4 miles (7,070 yds) with a .416 Barrett. It doesn't say the target size, but in the 3-mile he used a 32" H x 48" W target. It took them 69 shots to hit at 4-mile. I may be wrong, but from what I've seen of you and Sam shooting, with 69 shots, you could walk it in at 7k yards ezpz. Anyway, just curious if you considered the world record attempt. Cheers.

Well that sort effort is a very different deal to what we do (target size, target lay out, team size, forward spotters, shot count, etc, etc) not what I would call realistic in any sense other than trying to hold a record, but each to there own, and good on them. Truth is we have no interest in setting records, we are just pushing our own boundaries, learning and passing on what we can, while entertaining along the way.
As for what we are looking for in a cartridge, as said is something in the normal ELR/ULR distances 3000 to 4000 yard capability, with all the details mentioned in the video, Cheers

MarkandSam AfterWork I tend to agree. Seems like they just shot until they hit and viola, World Record! However, I haven’t done it so congrats to them. I just couldn’t help but wonder how you guys would do at 7-8k shooting.
