Guyana is the only Commonwealth country on the South American mainland. The official language in the country is English. It has been a presidential republic since 1970. It lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, which was discovered in 1498 by Christopher Columbus. The area of the country is 215 thousand km2. It has 800 thousand inhabitants. The climate of the country is tropical, humid and warm. Two-thirds of the country's territory is covered by uninhabited rainforest. The surface of the country is made up of the Guyana Highlands in the west and south. The most important river is the Essequibo. North of the Rupununi River is the Rupununi Savannah. Near the border with Venezuela is the King George VI waterfall with a height of 488 meters. The highest mountain in Guyana is Roraima (2,772 m). It is the only tourist-accessible table mountain in the Guyana Highlands.
