- Repair of a digital piano Casio Privia PX-110, which had two dead keys. The repair involved using conductive glue purchased from China on eBay for a ridiculously low price. The piano is back in business. Don't spill drinks into keyboards, folks!
There's one of these available for $50 USD at a local second-hand store. I really like the way they textured the keys; they don't feel like plastic. Needs a lot of cleaning, it's untested, and a white key is sticking up like a buck tooth. But it looks in your video like it's made of generally repairable components. So I think I'll go for it.

Pure gold! Casio should send you a huuuge gift - because I have seen a couple of complaints about failing keys, and I would not dare to buy the PX160 without this guide. I will order the glue along with the piano.
Old comment but I’ve had so many issues with my px160. One key which plays a very loud, sharp tone, let’s that jingle etc. works well enough for practice but it drives me crazy.

My PX-160 broke a few days back and I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the cover to actually start fixing it.

@@danielvanderstelt Yes! The side panels are really difficult to remove but with enough force they come off and you can just lift the top cover. I used a knife as a wedge to remove them.
You will need to use a scary amount of force.

This video was incredibly useful. Thank you. I managed to remove the half million bolts (and managed to put back all but one!) and discovered that the black bushing on the end of the hammer weight of a central key had broken and fallen off. I stole a bushing from the lowest key (which I never use) and slipped it onto the hammer weight in question and hey presto! It started to work again. I could probably live with losing the top and bottom 3 keys, so that gives me some spares without having to track down replacement parts.
Fixed it ! .....the earlier clavinovas actually have 4 graphite strips pre key and after cleaning and repainting them 6 times ( made my contact paint with water based polyurethane and graffiti powder ) with no results on the last try before putting it on the lawn , Out of the corner of my eye a tiny glimmer of copper speck flashed on the trace between the next 4 strips , the green material that seals the copper trace had worn off so small you really couldn't see it.... but it was enough to make contact when the the key was pressed.... paint brush and poly urethane over the worn spot..... good as new....there is no way of replacing these board yamaha stopped selling them so bringing them back to life is the only way... thank you for your help , i hope this will help other people keep these alive....

Oh bye the way the rubber type carbon contact assembly is called a membrane contact. They are all different so don't go looking for a generic type. The carbon contacts up inside are conductive but wear to almost o/c with repeated use, so much so that silver conductive paint is used to restore them. Just clean the contacts with isopropal then apply the silver conductive paint and allow to dry. Remote controls can be refurbished with this compound as well.
There are two contacts to allow touch velocity of the player to be ascertained and the loudness of the key being struck to be modified accordingly. Most older instruments of the 1950's to 1980's used to use gold or silver plated whiskers and rods to form the contacts. Organ & digital piano Manufactures, especially Japanese shifted to membrane contacts in the early to mid eighties order to make keyboard manufacture a lot cheaper and in my opinion less reliable.

I have a Casio PX-120 with same issue.
with your video,I opened it and found oxidized point on the board.
I have cleaned it and now waitting for my sliver glue.
BTW, the H on your video is not Hour but a hardness like it on pencil.
D42, the inscription on one of the keys, means that it is the 42nd key from the left (low A) and that it is a D note. Surely he knew what that meant.
That is AMAZING! I have a key on a very similiar Casio with a slightly different problem, like maybe the hammer has slipped out of place. I'm only guessing, but based on what I see in your video, I have a feeling that if I'm not afraid of removing "half a million screws" (lol), I will know pretty quickly what I am up against. I personally like the feel of the action on these better than on a lot of the Yamaha digital pianos.

I'd give this more thumbs up if I could. I don't actually need this information, but I just almost dropped a guitar pick into a Privia PX-110, and I wanted to see if it could be dismantled outside of a proprietary shop in case I ever do that. I learned that it can, and that I'm probably just better off being really careful not to drop guitar picks between the keys. Oh... and that conductive glue exists, and that you can use solder to fix the top of a circuit board (?!). Thanks!

now a-day , we can just use a 2B pencil sketch on it to fix. The graphite from pencil lead is a very good conductor of electricity because of delocalized electrons. Good Luck lol

how did you lift the black keys?..and how do you replace the keys when done? (especially since you have to remove pretty well a whole octave to lift up the rubber part underneath)..I wonder how much a job like this would cost if I found a professional to do it (I live in Toronto)
Ok, so I found the problem removing the top of my px-160 it is probably the same in the other models. You need to pull on the side panels outward to get them out they click in and out, behind both are 2 more screws holding the top. Watch for the cables attached to the sides! To remove the top carefully lift it straight upwards, again mind the connectors!

have this keyboard but with vastly different problems...the beat machine will engage on its own in the middle of performance, and the tones will change on their own once in a while also...any ideas? this is impossible to use as it is now, hope it can be fixed....thanks
HOw did U get the cover off to expose the full keys??? I've taken every screw out in sight below and on the sides..........but the cover seems to be one integrated piece of plastic above, below and sides???

I have another problem. (privia PX-160) On some black keys around the center (an area where I play a lot), a note-off plays an extra note (when I lift my finger off). It seems to move to a neigboring black key after I turned the piano around and vacuumed the keys thoroughly .I unscrewed everything at the bottom, but I couldn't lift the body to check under the keys.

I have a casio privia-350. Weeks ago it’s still working fine. When I turned it on this morning, it doesn’t have a sound. I tried pressing a lot of keys, turning the piano on and off. At times the sound goes back and then it’s gone again.

I have the official service manual. BTW Casio official service manual recommends using "gardening tags" (sic) that you cut an indentation into it to use it to remove the keys...

Yeah, I know about this conductive coating you are talking about. I wanted to try this cheap stuff from China for $1.71 delivered. Almost ten times cheaper.
Regarding durability, note that in my case I used it away from the area where contact is made, so it is not under any mechanical stress.
Why not high resolution on Fluke? I didn't really want to measure miliohms. I think that the black coating on the board has much higher resistance. I just wanted a crude test that the stuff works and measures almost as a short.

that grey stuff is solder. You have to use a hot air gun or a soldering iron. The grey stuff will turn into shiny solder after the flux has dissipated under heat

How to fix yamaha p45, working for how many minutes and then automatically play demo songs and i can't remove it even pressin the grand piano button every key has a different song that plays, when I turned off the piano I tried to turn it on but the red light is blinking. I tried to factory reset it many times, sometimes the blinking stops and will work for a few seconds/minutes and then it will automatically play demo songs again and when I turn it off again, the red light beside the power button blinks
yep thats happening to me...px-300. driving me nuts and i cant get cover off either, and i know my way around. casio is zero help, no repair manuals for us. why dont these manufacturers want us to repair these things? they could easily post repair videos. not inclined to buy their products if thats their attitude. super cocky bitches. presonus is the same way.

I have no idea if you still check comments, but I have the same problem. I contact points under the dead keys, and they look fine. However, I saw corrosion on the connector between the circuit boards under the keys. Water must have dropped on the connector, that is why the dead keys are in groups of two because they are the closest together on the connector. Is there anything that I can do about that? I looked at the traces at the connector between the boards and the that would be the part that I would have to repair.
PX330 Different keys hold and random notes sound with or without sustain pedal plugged in. Problem goes away if I turn off and back on. Any insight would be most welcome, thanks!

Hello. I hope you can help me with an opinion about a problem i have with my Maudio Keystation pro 88. It starts ok, is recognized both by usb and midi interfaces and i can factory reset it withno problem. A strange thing is happening: i only get arpegios when i play in order on the white keys.

That happens over all octaves. 5 keys don't record anything . I wondered if a simple cleaning of the dead keys could solve the problem with the arpeggios as well.

hello, i have a casio privia px 130 and i recently accidently droped it a few times trying to clean and now i have three malfunctioning keys, the last f, f#, the b right in the middle of the keyboard next to middle c. each of them have different problems, the b is uncontrollably loud, the f is delayed and loud, and the f # just doesnt play. what do you suggest i do?

I am having a similar issue. I have made my way to the contacts but do not see any corosion. Is there a way to check using the multimeter to see what is going on. Just one key doesnt work.
What could cause the piano to play for a min perfectly fine then after a min it starts sounding fuzzyish and like its about to go out then another min later the sound completely goes out for the entire keyboard, lights still on though. I cut it off then on again and that same thing repeats.

If you're going to work on keyboards you need a long screw driver bit and a drill (makes things tolerable). Magnetize it with a strong magnet every so often. Look in every screw-sized opening with a flashlight on back and sides. You are probably missing some screws.
Awesome tutorial, just got casio px 100 for very good deal from the marketplace. However, there are 4 keys (the furthest on the right hand) that don't want to go down when you press it. They are still make sound. Any idea to fix them? Not a big deal, as I'm just a learner though but it's good to know if they are fixable. Thanks :)
thanks to your video, I just repaired a korg digital piano. same general design with rubber membrane. same type of corrosion on pcb. I used a bit of contact cleaner first in affected area, then a precise sanding with dremel for glue adhesion. Then used conductive glue, no soldering as I didn't want to risk heat damage. No reason for soldering on micro pcb's for traces if there's good adhesion. By the way, how much did you pay for this casio keyboard ?

I have a privia px150 .2 keys are pulled up from the bed and cant be pushed back.i removed all the screws except for two which need to be removed from the inside.trouble is i can remove the2 speaker end sections to access these screws without fear of breaking something

Do you have any idea of what might be the problem? The default piano works, also the volume knob. Thank you in advance. (PS: I have a PX-310, which is almost identical to the PX-110).

How does the case come off
Sorry for my english, but I need help ! One key in my piano is loose (I don't know the correct word, but it moves to much, it is contrary to steady.) I open my Casio px 130 and it seems that the hook under the key (The thing that goes up and down when you hit the key) is what is loose. You can move it left and right very easily like a loose tooth. But for me it looks like every other hook ! Then I don't have idea why it moves so much. I don't know if the slimy/oily thing in the base of the hook is glue. If it does, maybe this key has too few of it. Maybe it hasn't anything to do whit it. Well I don't know. I am really tired of trying to fix it and making no progress :/ . So please I hope you can give me a hint !

Hi, I have CDP-120. The F-sharp key also dead but it has fallen down. If i lift key and put it back down it plays the note, but the key wont come back up. Can I fix it similar or should I take it somewhere?
What do you mean by "similar"? This video was about fixing corroded traces. Your problem seems like something is stuck in the keyboard. Try flipping the keyboard upside down first. Anything rattling around? Does the problem move to another key? If you are handy enough and not afraid of taking it apart, and reasonably sure you are not going to make things worse in the process, I would suggest giving it a try. It might happen to be something you can fix. Assuming it is not covered by a warranty, or you don't mind voiding it.

Kim Dang Hope you’ve figured it out by now. Is it possible to put a key in any one place, then play it? You can connect a tuner to find out what note it is, then construct the keyboard from there
Hello Thanks for the video. I am having a hard time removing the key after I pry it open from the plastic latches on the top. When you say pick up the keyboard from the bench, what do you exactly mean?

I mean that you need to let the hammer for that key go lower than the surface of your desk or bench to remove a key. So I suggest putting something like a book under each side of the keyboard to create some space under it.

Thank you for your video. I have a problem with my Casio Celviano AP 38.
Several keys (4 white keys in a row and 3 black keys in between) don't make any sound unless any four of them are pressed together.
There is one other black key at the other side of the keyboard, which plays well until one of the broken keys mentioned before is pressed. When pressed simultaneously, black key doesn't make any sound.
I wonder, if these symptoms could isolate the problem and show which element of the piano is broken. I tried to clean the keys and the electronic board under them, but keys still don't work. Will replacement of the board under the keys help or this could be the problem of other elements? If yes, I will start looking for the new board in the internet.

It is hard to guess. Probably, some trace or traces are damaged (spilled drink?). Keyboard switches are arranged in some sort of a matrix. Maybe a broken trace can lead to such effect that you described.

I don't know. One possible reason might be that something was dropped into the keyboard. I have seen pennies and paper clips in keyboards. Try flipping the keyboard upside down, let's say. Do you hear anything rattling around? Does the problem move to another key? Open it up and have a look.

Thank you for posting these videos. I have a Casio Privia 310. It is in very good shape. I purchased it new many years ago. I use it in my home studio and keep it covered. Suddenly, one key seems broken in the sense that not only is there no sound but the spring, cushion action is gone. It's dead. I suspect that a cat may have jumped on it. I am debating as to whether or not I should bring it to a repair shop or open up the board and try repairing it myself. Any recommendations?

If you are handy enough to take the cover off without doing more damage :), I would suggest having a look inside. You may find something simple like a guitar pick dropped between the keys. Try just turning the piano upside down: would something rattle inside? would the problem feel different or move to another key?
