A cheeky bonus video that I accidentally spent my Saturday afternoon getting carried away making! I'd love to know what you think about Instagram if you're an artist on there - do you ifnd it largely uplifting or deflating (or a bit of a mix)?
I typically don't let instagram determine my emotions, but if anything, it's inflating most of the time! Some posts have flopped hard, which I thougjt would do well, so I do my best to ramp up the expectations I have for them so I can further training myself to not be affected if one falls through!
it was deflating to me, but that's because of instant gratification. It is rewarding for those that put in the work (it's just that I don't have the time for it) ... and there're just so many good artists out there. I agree with everything you said, though. And I like your approach.
Be reminded to take a break once in awhile when doing art, its very important that you are in a good mindset because its not very nice forcing yourself when you not wanting to. And its very nice of you to make this challenge, i'm sure will participate!
The most disheartening thing about Instagram and social media in general is how hard it is to get noticed as an artist. And you can't even know for sure if you're hearing crickets because your art sucks, or it didn't reach your target audience, or the algorithm just picked someone else over you that day. You work really hard on a piece, and it really is quite good, and then you get 1 like ;_;
I try to avoid getting disheartened by looking at instagram posts like bricks creating a castle. This doesn´t always work, but it helps. I try to focus on what I´ve learned from that single piece, how fun it was creating or how much I struggled to achieve the result. Then I kind of disconnect the worth of the illustration and how many likes it gets. On it´s own the illustration keeps it´s worth for me, but as a instagram post I look at it as a way to make the castle stand stronger. Slowly I will build my platform brick by brick, and in that way the illustration as an instagram post also has immense value. Can´t have a castle without the pieces it is made of.
@@illubloom6801 I like your analogy about buidling a castle block by block. One thing that makes me feel better is that I tell myself that I can always remake an art piece later on down the line when I have even more followers if I really want the piece to get more attention. That way I can showcase my original piece, the updated piece and my progress all at the same time.
I recently just stopped drawing altogether because of the pressure I feel on Instagram. I want to be consistent and build a community and I love that, but creating art even once a week is exhausting to me, especially with a full-time job and other responsibilities at home. It's a constant battle I've been having for months now and I just don't enjoy creating at this point.
I totally get that! In a position like yours with a full-time job and home responsibilities that last thing you need is to feel pressured to create something for social media. I hope that not posting to Instagram anymore allows you to rebuild your love of drawing for yourself 😊❤
The algorithm makes it very difficult to built a long lasting community it seems. Because of the nature of social media, we don't really get a chance to sit with a piece of art or a person's post and really digest it. It's a quick glance, and then the feed throws something else at us. I'm not naive to think there was NO algorithm work on places like deviantART, but back in the 2000s, it felt like there was less interference of the algorithm. I and many others were able to organically find art and artists that we genuinely loved and follow them without this unseen hand of algorithmic forcing unwanted stuff into our notifications.
I’m struggling with the reels option. It seems like everyone is making them now and if you don’t, well you won’t grow. I hate not being able to sit and admire peoples art. Now it’s a bunch of fluff followed by a couple seconds of the actual art and then it’s gone. I was on a roll with posting my art and I felt so motivated and now I feel so discouraged. It’s also affected how I make videos on my channel. It feels like I hit a wall, so I had to take a break. I am coming back in February, but it’s feeling like a lot of pressure to keep up with both IG and YT. I want to share my art, but I still want to grow on both. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video. I really appreciated your input on it.

Yes, we should see Instagram more like a platform to show what we do. For oneself and being able to make people happy with what we create. Still it is always sad when you post something you personally really like and the creation was only seen by a few people due to the amgorithm and alike.
In the beginning I put a lot of energy into making posts and nice layouts but I never received much feedback from others so I lost the motivation to show my drawings and my paintings, you only get subscribers who never comment and never give a like, that made me feel only insecure about my art. It's frustrating and exhausting to have to be creative by command for IG even tho there are weeks you feel not inspired at all. The same happens with an online store IG I have ... it's very frustrating ... so after a year I decided not to invest more energy in Instagram and I don't post anymore.
That sounds so frustrating, Carla! I totally understand why you decided not to invest any more into Instagram, I'm glad you were able to recognise that it was frustrating rather than uplifting you. Did you find another platform that works better for you?

What a nice challenge!! I will participate, just last week I was looking through my old art and see what pieces I still like. I also realized that for almost a year my followers number is the same. It didn't grow at all. Granted, I've taken a 2 month break from the platform and also posted less and less because it became so disheartening to post and I feel like I'm just communicating through a bottle. Even when I posted every day and tried to invest more time and creative energy into the aesthetic of my posts, it just had less and less and less of an impact. And yeah, I know we are supposed to not care about the numbers, but that is how you get the hint that what you are doing has an effect/impact. When someone likes my posts, I feel like I reached to them, when they comment, I feel like what I tried to communicate through my art and my caption has some value or at least an interesting perspective, when someone shares my art I feel grateful because they took that time to further engage with my art and give me some encouragement. That's why I care about numbers, because I communicate through what I post there and when no one replies in any way, I feel invisible and socially awkward, especially since meeting people in person has become so difficult. Hi! Cute drawing, as always! ♥️ I've only got personal IG page and I have also thought about creating art Instagram page. But 👀 it's a loooot of work, especially, if you are starting today. As I was getting information about how the platform works, Instagram algorithm just didn't sound like a friendly place for small artists. The only thing I adore about IG is being able to participate in various drawing challenges. Other than that RUclips is so much better. If we were also able to create drawing marathons on this platform as conveniently, that would be amazing 👀 Every social media platform has its pros as well as cons, although for me YT has least amount of cons. At least, that's how it feels like for me now.
You're so right that every platform has pros and cons, and yes Instagram can be a lot of work sometimes! The thing I love about RUclips is that content has so much longevity because it can be searched for and watched years later, which is kind of the opposite model to a platform like Instagram.
@@MimimooIllustration I agree! And also, maybe it's just me, but I feel like communication between the content-creator and the viewer can be a little bit deaper here? You can communicate with each other on IG too, but exchanging opinions and ideas on YT, even when it doesn't have any DM section, can give so much more to each side than on Instagram. Like, you are eating candies on Instagram, and on RUclips you can eat something that is extremely delicious and tremendously beneficial at the same time. I just cannot remember the word I want to use to express the feeling precisely 😄
@@MimimooIllustration Just started RUclips about 3 months ago. Feeling like I’ve stumbled my way through YT bootcamp and just starting to share some actual art now.
I like Instagram as a resource and platform, but I've came to hate it in technical sense. Over a span of few weeks I went through 3 separate accounts, that got blocked and unblocked for no clear reason. One of them got permanently deleted, because I've accidentally tried to re-submit a comment after notification or probably because I've broken some limits (I'm not even sure). Thankfully, no posts have gotten lost, but it still makes me nervous. As a new account I have to constantly remind myself not to like few posts in row, to not subscribe to more people and not to post anything while I'm new, lest I'll get blocked again 😂 I get that they do it for safety reasons, but it's kind of taunting...
@@MimimooIllustration I don't think, that you should be worried, since your account, thankfully, is already established and has a good following. Limits are basically stating, how many accounts you can subscribe to, how many posts like and how many comments to leave per hour, based on how old your account is. On top of that it looks like Instagram sums up different kinds of activities in some mysterious way. And it wouldn't be much of a problem, if the app had some sort of counters, which would show current limit of activities. But alas, it just shows something like "we are limiting certain kinds of activities for the sake of our users, please, try again later" and leaves you to wonder, what, exactly you should not do this time around, and for how long. The most curious part is that I don't see a whole lot of people complaining about this, so it makes me wonder if I haven't take into account some kind of secret knowledge, obvious to everyone else. I never used Instagram before, so I would not be surprised. So, if you learn something, please, consider making a small video on what to do or not to do as an owner of a new Instagram account. To be honest, I wouldn't even bother too much, but artists on Instagram have been a huge inspiration to me, even in this stressful situation. Thank you for being such a positive presence.♥️

IG was good once, now its more pressure 🤢
I’ve honestly just kind of avoided instagram. Put a few posts up very occasionally but not often and not always art related
Fair enough! Do you use other platforms or do you prefer not to post much of your art to social media?
Ugh that's so frustrating and scary! I'm not familiar with what the limits are, maybe I should familiarise myself with them more just in case!
