I live in Florida. Back in the 70's early 80's there were slot of Baja bugs around. Then they were far and in between. I' m so glad to see people bringing them back. I loved my bug it was a hippy surfers Cadillac. 😋
You did can awesome job dude! I had a 68 bug and took the engine out and put it in a 65 Baja my cousin sold me for $600. He came out to help me take out my engine and put it in the 65. Took only an hour or so. I kept the tranny that was in the 65. Put fuel in it and tried to start it but wouldn't fire. We tried pulling it down the dirt road with my brothers van but it wouldn't crank for nothing. So had it towed over to a rod shop that specialized in hopping up bugs. They called two days later and said that a few small rocks had gotten down in the intake somehow and trashed two of my pistons. As we were trying to get it started i remembered I had the air cleaner off the carb and the big tires and chopped fenders allowed rocks sand etc to get down into the carb. They were going to have to bore it out because needed to be resleeved. He said might as well go to 1500cc which would be more hp, so I agreed. This was 1981 btw. About a week I get a call telling me it was ready. In the garage the mechanic went to start it and it cranked then shut off again and again about six times. Then after him scratching his head in a confused state he grabbed his board with wheels and slid under front of car all of a sudden gas started pouring out the fuel line. What had happened and the main reason it wouldn't crank for my cousin and I that day was because he had smashed into a telephone pole one day and crushed the front hood and gas tank. He replaced the fiberglass hood and fuel tank but when he had put the tank back in he pinched the fuel line hose. It fired up and ran great. I paid them and drove up to Big Chief tire and bought $1600 worth of rims, tires and shocks for it. Then a week later put a Webco carb and a rad pipe on it. It was painted cherry red with black interior all flat black. It already had a roll cage in it. I could climb any sand dune in granny gear. It had a low first gear. Claimed like a tank with the posi rear end. Loved it, but my luck went to crap in 82. One night coming home from my girlfriends around midnight I ran out of gas. The fuel gage had stopped working and I used a stick to check level. I thought I had enough to make it back but was wrong lol. So about a quarter mile down a road off US1 called Racetrack road it stalled. I pushed it down into a deep ditch along side the woods because it would be hidden and I knew I could drive out with no problem. I walked 13.5 miles in less than three hours at a slow steady pace. It had been raining it was in July it was in Florida and moccasins loved to lay out on the road to catch bull frogs that came out too. About a half hour I heard the sound of car tires on the wet road and a car flashed on its high beams and I held out my thumb. He just passed on by me in a hurry after he saw me. About another 30 minutes I heard another car and I held out my thumb and it flashed its brights on and slowed down then they floored it and blew past me too. I saw this car good it was a St Johns Sheriff's deputy car. I thought wth asshole. The next hour and a half not another single car came along. After I made it to the end of that road to St Rd 13 and called my dad to come get me and went back to house to get a gas can and fuel from the only gas station open at that hour which was ten miles out of the way then back to where I had ditched my Baja it was gone! I believe those a'holes the white LTD and the Sheriffs car had something to do with stealing my car! 😠 Never found it or saw it again.
Hey, I saw you said you used bilstein class 11 but I’m having trouble finding the ones that look like yours could you send me a link? And what did you have to do to install them? Thanks, Wyatt
looks fantastic.... except the rear spoiler. it totally ruins the lovely curve at the rear. get it off. not keen on raptor, I would have sprayed it in a semi Matt. but great job .
Love the build! I was given a 1964 recently and your build is very inspiring. What fenders are you running? Are they fiberglass? Mine was chopped in the rear a little more then I would have liked but I’ll try to make it work.
Absolutely awesome. I've been considering which way to go with my '71 super. . I'm wondering if you don't mind sharing, how much did this build cost you? Obviously there are variables but just a ball park
I am looking at getting one that is about 10 hour drive from where I live, it is a 1965, needs body work and interior work mostly, it has brand new fiberglass hood and front and rear fenders, 1600cc custom built engine, runs with a new battery and fuel primer. They were asking for 1800$, got it down to 1600$ I am hoping to make the drive next weekend to pick it up for a project! Also, how much did yours cost to repair and redo? Thanks, awesome video!
A scam lady named Judith had this exact bug for sale a week ago in texas and Facebook told me it was a scam and I think they deleted her account. Lol to bad I wanted it
Right on man. Great job rescuing that baja.
VW bajas are absolutely the most fun dollar for dollar.
Thx yup!
