I agree! It doesn't really have a "state song" feel to it in my opinion. I just read a few minutes ago, the reason that they wanted to change the state song. Which I understand. But I just don't care for the sound of this song for my home state. And parts of the lyrics are okay, but as Christie Richard said in response to you, it's too long, and would be too hard to learn and memorize for some people. The lyrics to the original state song were simple, and easy for anyone to memorize. And even though it apparently has a negative background, the tune to the original state song was an equally simple melody. As I just told my husband, it's fine as a "stand alone" song, ya know, just for everyday music, but as I said, it doesn't have a "state song" feel to it.

This is the Governor who refused to admit James Meredith into Ole Miss which led to President Kennedy federalizing the National Guard to quell rioting, by whites opposing integration, on campus. THAT is a mighty strong link to racism and one which should never be forgotten.
