Poland did not exist, when WW1 happened. The WW1 withing current Polish territory was fought by Russians against Germans and Austro-Hungarians. Russian part of Poland was held by Russians for over a year, from August 1914 until December of 1915.

Poland wants to get divided again
Poland and Ukraine haven't existed as states for long, the Polish state being created in 1918, after ceasing to exist for a few hundred years. Ukraine if I recall was created artificialy by Stalin, most of ukraine being formerly russia including Kiev. When Poland was created after ww1 by the americans, they gave them part of germany. Germany wanted the land back, Poland refused which resulted in Poland being invaded and ww2 starting. Looks like the poles will be the cause of WW3 aswell, the west coming to their defense again once they enter ukraine and get attacked.

Poland and Ukraine were technically created by the Germans under the Brest-Litovsk treaty (along with the Baltic states I'm pretty sure) but these reichskommissariats didn't last for long as WW1 quickly came to an end shortly after. Ukraine however was artificially created as a republic by Lenin as to make it a bufferstate more or less. Poland and the Baltics as we know went free.
The Ukrainian identity is completely artificial, along with Belarusian, these two have always belonged to Russia and they are Russian. The differences between the Russians and Ukrainians is negligible as they share history, culture, and language. Meanwhile take Germany as an example and they are more culturally and linguistically divided North to South, honestly Bavaria has a bigger claim to be independent than Ukraine does. Even when the Kieven Rus was a thing being a "Ukrainian" wasn't, Russia was Ukraine and Ukraine was Russia, same with Belarus.
And then there's also the fact that Ukraine hasn't even existed as an inhabited area for a long time, only a few hundred years really, the majority of Ukraine was basically a no-man's land where only raiding Cossacks lived until Russia came in and started inhabiting the land.

Yeah, without direct NATO intervention no country would last long. Had Russia gone into Ukraine with a million man army they would've taken and held way more land, but even so managing to take as much as they did with only like 160K men is insane, that's not even only combat personnel either that includes logistics too.
But let's be real, even with all of NATO going in against Russia they would lose hard, so many would immediately desert, just take the US army for example, the majority of soldiers are there to pay for collage or because they're broke, they are not laying down their lives for a useless collage degree or pocket change, they have no real patriotic attitude, and that can be said for Europe too, there's not many people who would accept conscriotions and most soldiers are probably just there for the paycheck in peacetime.

China & Russia's friendship comes without limitation and China has maintained its neutral stance in the Ukraine's war.
Last week Duda visit Xi, not to enhance bilateral trade as proclaimed, BUT to get the assurance that China will not support Putin militarily in case Poland steps it. That could be the reason why Duda seems gutsy this week.
