From many documentaries, books, movies, series, and podcasts, many people now know what communism looked like, but not many know what communism smelled like. Come inhale the Czech cult classic Smoke (KOUŘ, 1991) the movie way, thanks to the Some Like it Czech project.
Directed by Tomáš Vorel, Smoke is a unique cinematic experience filled with comedy, satire, and musical elements. Set in the 1980s during the late period of communist Czechoslovakia, the film portrays the absurdities of life in a totalitarian regime through the story of a young engineer, Mirek, who starts a new job at a dystopian factory. With Kafkaesque surreal humor, exaggerated characters, and eccentric musical numbers-including the famous 'Je to fajn'-the film serves as a sharp critique of life under the Bolsheviks and its stifling atmosphere of totalitarianism.
