- My bride asked me if she could buy a generator to support her home business, being without power is an issue for her...."yeah darlin, that sounds like another fun project!!!!"
She bought I Kohler 14 RCAL (50 amp output) with a 200 amp ATS (automatic transfer switch).
I hired a licensed plumber to route to the gen set from a tee off the gas circuit, hook up the gas, and install a new riser coming from the tee to the elbow going into the house.
I did all the electric work but hired a licensed electrician go over my work, besides digging and trenches, this mainly involved
1. Load circuit to ATS (in 1" CPVC conduit)
2. AC circuit from main subpanel to the gen set (to charge the battery), but also power the accessory plug (in 3/4" CPVC)
3. Cat 5E Ethernet to Wi-Fi router (in 3/4" CPVC, then split and run in 1/2" CVPC)
4. Control circuit, 4x shield grounded AWG 20 control wires (in 3/4" CPVC) from the gen set controller board to the ATS controller board, grounded (lightning protection) at the gen set, ungrounded at the ATS
5. Terminal ground to lighting grounding bar (8' buried)
Licensed electrician comments:
1. Disconnect the bond bar at the exterior subpanel, confirm before and after with continuity checks, insert bond screw to ground the box
2. Disconnect the bond at the ATS (same as last, confirm before and after with continuity checks)
3. Bond neutral to ground at the 1st means of disconnect, which is a 200 amp disconnect switch connected to the utility meter (the only place where the ground is now bonded to the neutral, and therefore to the transformer center tap)
Last step was an authorized Kohler dealer technician (Matt Herod of Small Engine Sales & Service LLC, Corsicana Tx, 903-872-8404), his work:
1. Review my work...Matt caught and fixed the way the control wire terminal connection at the gen set controller was wrongly connected
2. Set up exercise cadence (every Saturday, 20 minutes unloaded)
3. Program the cooldown cycle and on-off delays, put the settings to align with natural gas (not propane)
4. Run diagnostics/tests
5. Go over the "long term maintenance", yearly oil changes etc.
Well....great set up Derek 👌👍👏👏👏👏
Thank you
If you're running LPG, you don't have to change the jet on the newer ones, if you have the selector knob that is all you need to do, plus don't connect the timing connections that you would hook together for NG operation.
Hello, outstanding work, I have one question I know you can answer, I will be installing my Kohler generator. However, I can't find any direction where the battery charging wires connect to.
Pause the video at 6:49. Also refer to the installation manual. Use a 20 amp single pole breaker, and NM-B 12-2 grounded, and of course in a conduit. I used a 30 amp breaker, but switched to 20. The auxiliary plug also runs from this circuit. Thanks for the comment and complement.
