The Edsel brand had some unique cars for its time. But the whole endeavour is recognized as one of Ford's, and the automotive industry as a whole, largest failure.
Why were Edsels unique and what went wrong? Well check out my short history lesson to find out.
And let me know if you own one of these unique cars or your thoughts on the unique "Oldsmobile Sucking a Lemon" grill :D

There was also the 'Continental' brand separated from the Lincoln lineup to sit above to compete with Cadillac/Imperial with Lincoln to fight Buick/Chrysler with Mercury-Oldsmobile-Desoto, Edsel would take on Pontiac and Dodge with Ford-Chevrolet-Plymouth in the low price field

I can remember my Dad and Grandpa talking about Edsels. As a kid they were known as lemons, but I didn’t understand why. Thank Vic!

Yeah not an ideal way to do quality control

I live in Finland, Scandinavia. Edsels (and DeSotos) are cult cars around these parts. Middle-aged vintage fanatics prefer them over many more successful brands.

Which 2 do you own? I personally think they have some cool styling.

The Edsel wasn’t really a bad car, it was just ahead of its time. People didn’t like to buy ugly cars-they definitely had a distinct look.

Don’t disagree that the distinct look played a part. But there were definitely quality issues as well.

Both the Ford Edsel, and the Chrysler DeSoto, failed at the same time, and for the same reason: Both models were overpriced.. Why should somebody buy a DeSoto when for the same money, they could step into a Chrysler? Why should anybody buy an Edsel, which was just a ford, with odd looking trim, when they could step into a beautiful Lincoln, for $200 more?

So sad that Edsel - a gentle, refined and truly classy man - is memorialized on a world-famous automobile flop which is *not* gentle, refined and classy.

While I honestly don’t know much about Edsel himself, it is shitty to have your name associated with a failure that wasn’t your fault.
      Thanks for watching.

He was a bit of a prick with the unions apparently

Edsel died in large part due to prolonged, intense stress heaped on by his autocratic dad Henry, whose controlling stubbornness only magnified with advancing age. This view was held by family members.

Sales were by far the best in '58, but most of the Edsels on the market today seem to be 1959 models.
Perhaps 5000-6000 Edsels from the three model years are estimated to survive today.
