The thing about using something besides cardboard or rope for testing media is finding something that is completely consistent all the time. Denim would have to be the same, rolled the same, & be the same amount of layers... its tricky i know
I'm thinking that maybe (?) some media are easier for some steels/geometries than other media, so I think it makes sense to use a variety of materials to simulate real-world use. Rope is going to stay in the mix. I was just checking to see how much wear denim adds.

I use a piece of antler. Cheaper, les garbage and same abrasive coefficient for maybe 1000 test
Have you tried the loaded scotchbrite pads, like Bluntcut uses?
No, but I'll check it out.
Where can I find them?
Why not use rope?
