"The 737-200 was very succesful" 737-200 Rudder issues in 1990s: *Let us introduce ourselves* During the 1990s, a series of rudder issues on Boeing 737 aircraft resulted in multiple incidents. In two separate accidents, pilots lost control of their Boeing 737 aircraft due to a sudden and unexpected movement of the rudder, and the resulting crashes killed everyone aboard. A total of 157 people aboard the two aircraft were killed. Similar rudder issues led to a temporary loss of control on at least one other Boeing 737 flight before the problem was ultimately identified. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the accidents and incidents were the result of a design flaw that could result in an uncommanded movement of the aircraft's rudder. The issues were resolved after the NTSB identified the cause of the rudder malfunction and the Federal Aviation Administration ordered repairs for all Boeing 737 aircraft in service.
I was about 4 when I traveled by plane for the first time, and it was on a 737-200. Got a tour of the cockpit as well since it was before 9/11 and nobody really gave a crap about things like that back then. Good times.
I love this type of 737, especially with the Pratt & Whitney Engines and those glorious jet sounds from that time. Like Swiss001 said, I know Canadian Airlines still use the 100s and 200s for remote gravel runways. They have a special mechanism in front of those narrow P&W so less of a chance to get rocks like the video covered. Nice video, I always enjoy them! Flying on one of these is on my bucket list before they get retired.
I’m an aviation major at Lewis University which is located in the suburbs of Chicago and we have had a 737-200 on campus for 20 years after United donated it to us. This past semester I took out 737 systems class, and at the end of the semester we got to start it up and throttle up the engine. Easily the coolest thing I’ve ever done and this plane will always have a place in my heart❤️ #longlivethe200model
"It's just nice to keep a piece of history flying and you know there are no safety concerns at all so why no using the plane?" And that freakin Aloha Airlines livery.
I've flown on 737-300's, which are similar to the -200. Also, it's worth mentioning the "eyebrow" windows that helped pilots navigate back in the ol' days.
Captain here: The main reason the 737-200 still flies in Canada is not its landing gear but because it can be equipped with a gravel-kit. This is a modification that will help keep gravel away from the engines. Since many runways that are operated by Canadian airlines are not paved but simple gravel strips, an airplane without this feature runs a high risk of getting debris and gravel into the engines hence damaging them. *flys aways*
Actually the reason the 200s are still being used in Canada is not because of their robust landing gear, but because of its ability to be equipped with a gravel kit.

swiss: 737-200 is the loudest passanger plane Tu-144: well yes, but actually no version 2: swiss: 737-200 is the loudest passanger plane Tu-144: Are you joke to me?
Actually, the reason 737-200s are used in the Canadian north is because of their small engines. With engines, gravel can very easily get sucked into them and cause damage, and the way to prevent this is to have a hose-like device that keeps the gravel from getting sucked into the engine. This isn’t really possible with larger engines because it’s extremely difficult to keep the dust out of wider engines with this device. Luckily, the engines of the 737-200 are very narrow and it’s easy to keep the gravel out of the engines like this.
Yes I would fly in a 737-200. Until earlier two thousands Alaska airlines was still flying them here in Alaska. That was the first jet aircarft I fell in love with. Still my favorite jet.
The 200s have a noticeably longer takeoff roll than other comparable aircraft. I really noticed this flying Western Airlines 737-200s into ALB and ELP, February-March 1986,
Not only that are cheap so they use them but they have doors for cargo and attachable compressed air blowers so gravel doesn't go into the engines so they won't be using more newer aircrafts anytime soon cause they don't have that feature.
There are no safety concerns as long as the plane is properly maintained and taken care of. That tends to be the problem with third world airlines. they bought these planes because they don't have the money to buy new ones, which sort of implies that they may not have the money to do the recommended maintenance. Additionally, a lot of these countries probably don't have real overseeing boards to set regulations. The FAA and NTSB have such rigorous regulations only because they've been around for a long time and have learned a lot from past experiences.
The landing gear doesn't have anything to do with why the 200s are still flying in Canada. It's because the older engines, with smaller intakes, can operate on unpaved runways with the addition of a gravel kit, which uses bleed air to keep debris out of the engines. The larger hi-bypass turbo fans on later models would ingest too much and damage the engines.
That's actually not the only result they operate 737 200s. It's also because of gravel kits. As you see the 200s operate in gravel runways so you need to blast that stuff away.
This video is partially incorrect. 1) No, the gear is not more rugged. The 737-200 has a gravel kit attachment that can be installed. It includes plates on the gear that stops stones from getting kicked up. 2) The Engines also have a gravel kit. On fitted 732s, there is a small tube that extends out in front of the engines in order to blow air outwards. This prevents rocks from getting sucked into the engines. 3) The Engines have a smaller diameter, making it so a gravel kit is able to be fitted to them. If they were to fit a similar kit to the 737 MAX, rocks would easily, and more likely get into the engine due to the diameter. A gravel kit would not be able to prevent the rocks from entering the engines.
