    Remember, Angels have commonly appeared “terrifying” to people in historical/religious record. Important to get over our huge preconceptions of what ‘angels’ (or ‘demons’) actually are and look like. We have decades of dumbed down film/tv to thank for that misconception. Midnight Mass understands and cleverly plays with that.

      Also people seem to have missed it but when the Angel first attacks Monsignor Pruitt and he lays dying, he recites the Lords Prayer.
      The Angel looks at him with shock, rips its wrist open and makes him drink. Its pretty clear (but very very very subtle) that this Angel really is what Monsignor assumed.

      I like that they didnt lean too heavy into canonizing the Angel. They didnt go full on 'this is the inuniverse lore'. In the end, Sherriff Hasan and Ali, the Parish at St Patricks, everyones religion is respected. No ones proven right and no one is proven wrong.
      This is what makes this such a compelling and universal story, where nobody watching feels invalidated or mocked

    Speaking of Riley and Father Paul...the opposite wasn´t only in their behaviour but also how the society sees them. Riley tries to be better but everybody sees him as lesser (the scene after his death, like oh yeah, the drunk liar who killed somebody, you can´t believe him) and to the opposite Father Paul, he literally brings death to his people and is seen in high regards because "he is a man of faith".

    Needful things (restoration and gifts at a price)

    This series was a good mash of all these themes.

  • @roguechevelle
    @roguechevelle 2 года назад +7

    The point about isolation and fanaticism when you spoke about Jonestown makes a lot of sense. I watched the documentary on Netflix Jonestown: Paradise Lost a few years ago, I have never cried so hard watching a documentary in my life. I had nightmares for weeks. The children were made to and the adults who refused to drink at gun point were forcibly injected with syringes, pure murder and since then I now loath the term mass suicide being uttered when talking about it tbh but I agree that cutting people off from the rest of the world is a tactic used by extremist cults like that. It's a really interesting premise for the show with the religious themes with the twist of vampirism. I'm really preferring the emphasis on story and characters that Flannagan brings to the horror genre. It's great to have stories with complex themes that can make you think rather then just jump scares etc.

    I think what makes Beverly truly vile and unlike-able is that she not only thought that she was above everybody but she also thought that everyone else was underneath her (there can be a subtle difference in this). And she felt that she should get special treatment because of this and her God should favour her and not anybody else. That is truly selfish behaviour. She also was quick to judge and hate and spew hatred towards others all under the guise of being pious and holy. I think we all know people like this in our lives and that makes her character very real and triggering.

    Okay just a thought if Erin’s baby disappeared in her womb, and she drank the blood of the vampire is it safe to say the baby was sickly, or causing her sickness she knew nothing about so she was “healed” ?

    • @lovestrudel1
      @lovestrudel1 2 года назад +1

      Yes & no. It was "healing" her, but not b/c the fetus was sick, but b/c the pregnancy itself was being registered as a sickness. The immune system (IS) changes throughout a pregnancy, & at points in pregnancy certain immune functions are repressed to prevent IS from rejecting a fetus. Why would a fetus be attacked if this didn't happen? Well, due to the father's contributions some fetal cells have antigens, & the bodies natural response would be to attack these foreign substances. Since the demon blood communion cocktail seems to behave like a supercharged IS boost, there's a good chance it targeted those fetal cells as our IS naturally would if our bodies didn't naturally repress that activity during pregnancy.

    The death speeches for Riley and Erin are so chilling. I love that the original monologues on the couch were two different beliefs of death. Riley got to experience a version of Erin's thoughts on the boat where the crash victim took his hand and forgave him as if he floated from one existence to another how Erin described for her daughter. When Erin was dying in the end she described a version of Riley's thoughts on death intermixed with her own. Riley's speech was about purpose and he completed his in the moment on the boat resisting his urge and warning his friend and Erin's speech was about how God and heaven are ultimately about love and not being alone only to realize that she isn't because she was always a part and always will be.

    The creature could very well be an angel if you consider the fact that angels may have never been real to begin with and vampires were perceived as being “angelic” early on. That’s what was great about the series. It’s possible that vampires were “angels” all along

    Those people were in clear and present danger from the start of the show, you can feel it from first 2 episodes. It reminded me of the Jonestown town massacre. I mean you ask yourself how would people give away their power and lives to one person like that? That lady Beverly, the religious extremist was like the dick chaney of the operation, she was right about Riley, they shouldn't let him go...her performance was the most powerful and deserves emmy nod definitely. The scene in the end with sheriff and his son praying just before sunrise hit me in the feels...that's probably one most moving television scenes in history.

      Nah i think it died because Reeza stopped feeling her legs, hence their smile because it cemented the fact that the creature didn’t make it to the mainland, remember it says there is nothing for 30miles all round the Island. Even if it healed mid flight the sun would have caught up with it before it could hide.

    I am like you, I get scared with scenario's i can not help but think what will i do in this situation. I would have fallen for it and that scares me to death. Christians will say but its not an angel its a vampire. They can not put themselves in the situation not once was it called a vampire. What keeps going through my mind is no one has seen an angel in the bible the angel always says says do not be afraid for i and an angel of the Lord meaning that its form will scare the pants off you.these are island people who are into their religion. it was Dave that did the leg work preparing them slowly, the miracles were part of it, that was the rolling moss. Plus showing how easily it is to manipulate the bible and people. Would i drink the cool aid NO in that situation i would not have fallen for it.
    Oh and Bev. I know too many of them. She was the reason it went that far. Her death was too quick but i must say her digging to try and save herself I laughed.

    The only thing I don't understand in this great show was the angel's (and I do think it's an angel) motivation. Why would it want to get involved with the Monsignor's plan? If it wants to propagate, it can do it directly by itself. It's in a perfect place with people from all over the world who could return to their homes infected.

    • @CoolNerd
      @CoolNerd 2 года назад +2

      I’m not sure about it’s motivation. But I’m fairly certain it was trapped in the cave. It was said how the sand storms were constantly burying and uncovering things. So it might not of had an opportunity to escape until right when Pruett discovered it. That’s just my opinion. I don’t think it’s an angel, though. I feel nothing that requires you to take the life of another to survive would be of God. But it’s always nice when there are people on the opposite spectrum. Makes way for conversation

    • @theintrnationlst
      @theintrnationlst 2 года назад

      @@CoolNerd To be sure, it seemed the implication was that it was trapped there since biblical times. As to taking the life of another to survive, there are plenty of God's creatures that kill to survive. The reason I think it is an angel is that vampires don't seem to be a known thing in the world of the story, otherwise someone would have recognized it as such, SOMEONE would have read Dracula or Anne Rice. Also it doesn't follow ALL the rules that we associate with vampires, and so just as a whale living in the ocean doesn't make it a fish, we can't for sure say that this being is a thing of evil. God always sends angels to do his dirty work, whether to give bad news or to destroy. Since God reserves creation for himself, where else did this creature come from, but from Him? Perhaps God was trying to prove some Jobian point, or throw another form of temptation at us to prove our mettle. I've heard Flanagan has said it's not an angel, but I think he hasn't' fully realized the implications of the world he created. My wife is a publisher and editor and that happens a lot. Often an author intends one thing but what they write implies it is another.

    • @CoolNerd
      @CoolNerd 2 года назад +1

      @@theintrnationlst I can see parts of what you’re saying. I feel like just because it doesn’t meet some of the vampire rules doesn’t mean it’s not a vampire. Many movies and books have added, changed or completely left out certain rules. Like the having to be invited in by the home owner. I feel like it hit on the main vampire rules and aspects. Such as sunlight, and the need for blood. As well as the disease that’s mentioned in the show is one that is always brought up in relation to vampirism. But to add to what you said, how is it that no one in that universe knows what a vampire is?

    • @theintrnationlst
      @theintrnationlst 2 года назад

      @@CoolNerd Heh, well, like my whale example, just because it DOES meet some of the vampire rules doesn't mean it is a vampire. Since they're fictional creatures, they can be whatever a writer wants or needs them to be. Since this universe doesn't seem to have any vampire fiction or lore, their origins are up for grabs. Who's to say that what we call a vampire isn't an angel? At least in the world of the series.
