I am a Cook for a Civil War re-enactment group, been doing it for over 30 years now, I began many years ago frying my hard tack in bacon fat, which is something just about every soldier & battlefield cooks had on hand with a lot of bacon, grease & hard tack, frying for a minute or 2 makes the outside crust much softer with an easier to bite crunch to it & the inside soft, & the bacon grease gives it an excellent flavor especially when adding a couple of spices, I got this idea from an older Lady I met on the battlefield at Gettysburg once with our group camping out & she showed me a letter that had been passed down in her Family for years, one of her relatives that fought in the war had written home to his Wife & mentioned the food they ate, including the hard tack & he said it could break teeth, but many began frying in bacon fat which made it much better to eat.
You add just enough humor to your video's that make me chuckle while learning. Thank you sir, and please, keep up the good work. I look forward to your video's.

Haha. I’ve made that before. Check your dental insurance before eating these 😂. I vacuum bag mine individual and they last forever. You are right about the “ How to Cook “ information, so many different variations. I like to add mine to a dry soup mix I have. I smash the cracker with my leatherman then open the vacuum bag and add to the soup before I start to heat it, because these things take just as long as dehydrated food to rehydrate. You can also use them to make a simple gravy.

I’ve heard of boiling the broken up pieces in broth or added to a stew. I assume they would soften to a dumpling like consistency.
I am going to use it a lot of different ways...

Bread equivalent of Jerky. Salt is one teaspoon or one tablespoon? you say both. Great idea though. Thank you for the video, Matt
One tablespoon
What about putting cinnamon in would that stay preserved with 100 yrs shelf life ? Or turmeric , desiccated coconut, maple syrup, honey etc. Thanks
I was thinking that also. I think the next batch I make I will throw some cinnamon in there...

wonder if it would work to mix salt and water and then add water and salt to flour.
You could do that.

You don't even need salt, though I highly recommend it
The salt makes it a little better but you are right you don't really need it...
The recipe I had didn't take salt. I had to add salt to eat it. Wow you eat this stuff!
The salt just gives it a little taste. They are pretty hard, you gotta dip them in coffee or something to eat them lol
Adding Oregano also gives it some nice flavor then fry it in bacon fat before eating, makes it 100x better.
I read that civil war soldiers would boil fatback and add hardtack to make soup.
I think they would eat just about anything...
Would go good in my soup or coffee.
That is how I am going to use mine...

Even in summer you want your chicken broth, hard tack and chicken fat and you can go all day.
Yep. This stuff is so hard that you gotta soak it in something...
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival Soaking it a fatty solution gives you a high nutrition value.
