I had the snorkel experience with my brother in 2012. Its my country and I really wanted back to get dive lessons.

Jacques, I can't have enough words to say you "merci", for the great videos that you produce about Roatan, Honduras. At a time when many people in North America heard just bad news about Honduras, is refreshing to see people like you, a non Honduran, showing the world how beautiful is my country, I can't thank you enough Jacques for such accomplishment. I only hope that other visitors to the Islas de la Bahia (Roatan, Utila and Guanaja and plus) will follow your example of true appreciation for our natural treasures, after all, this is part of the Second Coral Barrier in the world ! After saying that, I hope that Hondurans and visitors, contribute to keep this zone as a true Treasure for all. Wow!!! This is breathtaking and SO well made. I just got back from beautiful Roatan. I took my GoPro with (total newbie here lol!)...and watching this work of art reminds me that I have a lot to learn!! Honduras is such a beautiful country and the Mesoamerican reef.....breathtaking!

This is awesome - rather than spend hours trying to edit our go pro vids, which are great for our selves, this serves best to share with friends what we actually see as this is taken in exact same location we frequent. I guess mid-December to May are best... But you may still get a 2 to 5-day storm at any time of the year. Tropical weather is what it is... unpredictable!

Hi Jacques,Your video was spectacular! We are coming to Roatan end of March 2016 for the first time to snorkel the reef. What spots on the island are the best at which to snorkel? We will be staying near Sundancer Villas. We will have two 13 yr olds with us. We love seeing turtles, rays, barracuda, etc and are hoping to see a nurse shark. Our normal vacation spot is Dean's Blue Hole Long Island Bahamas.....a freediving mecca.

I have never been near Sundance Villas. Everyhting you saw in the video was filmed at West Bay.
The snorkeling might be just as good where you are going, so you might be happy with staying there the whole time.
If, not try heading out to West Bay for a day with the kids.
The snorkeling is very easy there.
At West Bay, there is a wharf right in front of Infinity Bay hotel (the Infinity Wharf). In the day time you should always enter the water to the left of the wharf. The boats come in on the right side of the wharf, so it's a little dangerous there. The best place to enter the water is at the left end of the beach (a 5-minute walk from Infinity). Once you get there, swim right out perpendicularly to the beach (towards the white buoy), and after a minute or so you will find a small passage and right after that you will be in 15 feet of water. The corals form valleys and peaks, so at some point you will be in deeper water and then in much shallower water. And yes, all the fish you see in my video are right there, 100 feet from the beach. some are quite common, others less.Very few sharks around West Bay. There are a few Nurse Sharks, but they usually rest around the bottom during the day.
You can try going to Cordelia Banks. That's on the South Side, and there are more Nurse Sharks there.

PS: I you go to West Bay, try to go there when the cruise ships are not in port. They are only there 2 or 3 days during the week, but on those days the population on the beach doubles or triples...

Thank you for this beautiful video. I just got back from 8 days on Roatan, and snorkeled this reef every day. Your video captures what my cell phone could not; I believe I even saw the same green moray eel. Is your video camera waterproof, or do you use some kind of housing for it? Yes, I use an Ikelite waterproof housing for my camera. I have 2 other videos of Roatan on my chain if you care to watch them. I also have one shot in French Polynesia. hi Jacques just wanted to clarify. if we stayed at infinity bay resort would the snorkeling be the same as your video. How deep is the water their I am comfortable snorkelling but can't dive down very deep because of ear issues. are the views good from the surface as well

Peut-on voir ces poissons uniquement en plongée ou nous pourrons également les voir en snorkeling de la plage sans aller dans les eaux trop profondes? À combien de mettre de la plage peut-on déjà se régaler de voir nos amis colorés? Nos avons regardé un hôtel sur West Bay puis un autre sur Sandy Bay... Bonjour Michel et Diane. Ce vidéo a été filmé entièrement à la plage de West Bay. Il y a beaucoup de circulation maritime à West End et la plongée n'y est pas recommandée. Le récif et les poissons que vous avez vus sont à 2 minutes de nage de la plage de West Bay. Le récif longe la plage et il n'est donc pas nécessaire de prendre un bateau pour voir tout cela. Les poissons sont présents à différentes profondeurs, donc il est possible d'en voir plusieurs espèces même à de faibles profondeurs. Pour les plus gros poissons, il faut pouvoir plonger pour arriver à leur niveau, ou bien les regarder passer en-dessous. Des heures de plaisir à plonger à votre guise et autant que vous le désirez.

Hello Trina! I'm so happy for you! You are going to have a great time... Most of what you have seen in the video was filmed right in front of Infinity Hotel, just to the left of the Infinity jetty. You can also enter the water at the West end of the beach. There, just head out to the reef by heading towards the white buoys. You can swim to the left and head towards the point. Any other 'terra-firma' suggestions are welcome as well. ie dining, excursions? Infinity boasts it's own water purification system--- feeling a little paranoid to venture out-- digestively. Would love to get to mainland and do a Garufina day trip but it doesn't seem to match the ferry/flights to do 'just a day'. We are leery of the 'animal attractions' on the island as they are captive ;o(. Thanks again for any suggestions and have a wonderful day.

You can also try some snorkeling spots not far from West Bay, like the Blue Channel. It’s a 10-minute ride by boat and I’m pretty sure the dive shop at Infinity Bay can take you there. They can also recommend other snorkeling spots you can try.
There are some Garifuna people living on the island. They mostly live at the East end of the island. You should ask about day trips that go there. You could also look into Gumbalimba Park, which is only 10 minutes from West Bay; they have free-roaming monkeys that come and sit on your shoulder when you offer them sunflower seeds, and also some parrots, which also live free. They are free to come and go as they please, but choose to stay because they are well treated. You can also see the parrots fly overhead around 6 a.m. at the east-end of West Bay (near Las Rocas). And if you are feeling adventurous, Gumbalimba Park also offers a great Zipline through the forest canopy.
There might also be a day-trip you can take to the mainland to a very quaint Honduran village in the mountains call 'Gracias Limpiras'. Ask about it at Infinity, and if they don't offer it, go to the Henry Morgan hotel and ask Nathalie about it.
As far as restaurants, you will definitely want to try the Coconut Shrimp at Bananarama, and check out their 2 for 1 pizza night Monday or Tuesday. You can get 2 large pizzas for the price of 1, so bring some friends. For high-end dining, you should go to 'The Vintage Pearl', which has an excellent wine cellar and some 4 star dining. You will also be encouraged to try "Gio's", which is your typical Crab shack. Some people love it, some people don't. I was among the latter…

Trina Cummins-Freund I don't know if my message is gone to reach you "too late", but Honduras has plenty of option for 'terra firma' excursions, check with Garifuna Tours. Close to La Ceiba is Pico Bonito National Park, one of the best places to watch birds in their natural environment, more than 300 species. The Pico Bonito Eco Lodge is the only resort inside the Park with world class recognition. About 1.30 hour on car, west of La Ceiba is the town of Tela, with some of the best white sand beaches near a town in Honduras. Tela has a large Garifuna population, with great resorts and restaurants in town. Near Tela is the second largest Botanic Garden in the world: Lancetilla. Honduras is full of National Parks and Natural Reserves, more than any other Central America country. A land full of Spaniard Colonial cities and towns, enriched by Living Native cultures. In Honduras you will never feel a "stranger", only an explorer discovering a new world that you never imagine before.

We are going back the end of April and I would love to go where this was shot and try to shoot my own. Im a professional photographer but this video thing is new for me. Id like to get some great footage to work with. I snorkeled in front of the Grand Roatan Hotel last time and it was beautiful, just not like this. Looks like you were near the drop off wall. That was a lovely way for me to take a dip again in West Bay. And I'm especially pleased that you dedicated the video to the Roatan Marine Park. I am from Calgary and spent a few months volunteering with Giaco, Christi, Nic and the gang there. Remarkable people and there might not be any fish in your video if not for them. I was doing beach and snorkel patrols in West Bay to try and teach cruise ship passengers how to snorkel more safely (safe for the reef I mean) and inhibit some of the illegal seahorse and shell trade that unfortunately happens there. Great video. Curious, what did you shoot it with? The Olympus tough TG-2 or TG-3 are great cameras, good for 59 feet. But I suspect you may be freediving a bit deeper than that. A talent I don't have.

Beautiful video! Looks like your not a first time freediver are you? There are some really long shots in there! How long can you stay down below for? We went the easy route and learned to scuba dive while in Roatan, but there's something beautiful and relaxing about freediving.

Wow - what a stunning video! What kind of camera do you use? I'm secretly hoping it's something I can afford to buy my daughter. She uses a go pro but the wide angle makes it hard to get a good shot unless you are inches away.

I used a Sony Handycam HDR-CX580, with an Ikelite housing (Product Number 6038.55), and 2 X LED i-Torch Video Pro5 lights (one attached to each handle of the Ikelite casing). This system cost me about $2500 and is considered 'mid-range'. The resolution is 1080 pixels. I am in the process of acquiring a 4K system, so the quality of future videos would be even better (you can subscribe to my chain to get a notification when they are pubished). Hello Mark... The best beach to go to in Roatan is West Bay. There, the reef is only a 1-minute swim from the beach. The are 11 hotels on that beach, so you have lots of choice; Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess, Bananarama, Paradise, Henry Morgan, etc... Let me know if you have any other questions. HelloTara... This video was taken at West Bay, at the Western end of Roatan. I highly recommend West Bay. I have been there 6 times in the last 3 years, and it just keeps getting better. There are more fish every time. Also, everything you saw in the video can be found 100 feet from the shore. So the added advantage is that you don't have to rent a boat eveytime you want to see the reef and the fish. West Bay has 11 large hotels right on the beach, so you should have no problem finding one that's right for you.

What can I expect going November 20th? Are their trips to go swim with the whale sharks? How common are they there, and if they are, is November a good time to possibly see them? I specifically would like to swim with them if possible. Otherwise, any other recommendations would be appreciated.
Hello Robert... Whale Sharks are most common in August. That's when they come to feast on the mid-August coral spawn. Also, you need to know that September, October, and November is the rainy season there. I wouldn't recommend going in Novenber specifically for that. Let me know if you have other questions.

Absolutely beautiful. I felt myself floating through the waters with you! Speaking of water, is it really this clear, or did you touch up your video? We've always wanted to free dive Roatan, but have decided not to because of all the bites we see and hear about. Our friends are there right now and eaten up!!!! I am a buffet table, came back from Panama with over 200 bites. Any suggestions about avoiding/protecting from all the bites? Would sure love to experience this beautiful underwater landscape. Hello Kathy... The water really is that clear. Of course, the quality may vary, but I would say it is like in the video about 70% of the time (usually good to excellent). The only adjustments I make are contrast and white balance (which restores the colours to what they should be). I am lucky in that the sandflies don't like the taste of me. I rarely get bitten. I tell people to use a mixture of coconut oil and a bit of cedar oil. Also, the sandflies don't seem to like clear, hot and dry weather. They seem to come out in cloudy and wet conditions. Good luck!
Kathy, I got chewed to bits on a private island. There are sand flies, but some Cactus Juice or Natures Own (organic repellant they sell there) will help - so do Defend Bug Patches (vitamin B1 in a transdermal patch).

+briannwo1900 Hello Brian. Very few sharks around West Bay. There are a few Nurse Sharks, but they usually rest around the bottom during the day. Most of the shark dives occur on the other side of the island. It's not very far, because the island is long and narrow. Are you planning to go see the sharks in Roatan? Hello Volodymyr. Yes, I use a Red filter for tropical water. This is necessary when you film below 15 feet (5 meters), because the Red is absorbed by the water. After 15 feet, the pictures or film appear very green/blue if you don't use a red filter. There may be a red filter specific to your brand of camera. Cheers.
