As a 13 year old who lost over 50 lbs in under a year it just makes me sick seeing people who try to normalize being over weight, it’s not normal, it’s unhealthy and it’s not everyone else’s fault, if you can gain the weight you can loose it trust me I understand it’s hard but it is not impossible you just have to start

Thats when I lost my weight too. Went from 180lbs at the end of 6th grade, and came back to 7th at 140lbs. All I did was walk a few miles a day, and change my eating habits from junk food to lean meats, and veggies

Go to the gym and start easy. Don’t feel like anyone is judging you there because everyone else at the gym is there for the same reason as you. To better themselves. You got this my brother. If you have ever thought about changing your life, pull all of your mental strength together, stop being afraid of the unknown, and you can do this my brother. Take small steps, strat by taking walks of the idea of the gym is too much but don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, being in uncomfortable situations is when we grow as people. Cut out processed sugars and junk food. But still eat a little here and there so you are not miserable. Limit things but don’t completely exclude them. You got this. I promise you won’t regret this. No one will do it for you, it is all left up to you.

There is a lot of evidence that children put on diets and encouraged to lose weight actually gain more weight in the long run, so there is legitimacy to that. They are more likely to develop eating disorders as well.
@fly crap I'm not talking about a military strict diet. I mean specifically encouraging weight loss, of course we should encourage children to eat healthy foods and exercise. But a focus on weight loss in itself is damaging. Also it can be harmful, some children are "overweight" before puberty, but its a part of their normal development, they hit puberty and grow inches, leading to a normal and healthy body weight.

Thats what I was saying ,is yes we should help children eat healthier and exercise if they are not doing those things...we just don't have to talk about weight. We can literally just talk about healthy behaviors. Talk about weight to a child, regardless of its said in a "kind way" or not is shown to increase risk of Eating disorders, and higher BMI. I'm a dietitian who specializes in eating disorders, which is why I find it important to make sure we don't harm a child's health in the long run. My opinion is that you can be okay with yourself and still make changes...those are not mutually exclusive. I agree though that there are problematic double standards. Anyways, our approaches may be slightly different, but I think are opinions on outcome may be the same.

I think what she meant was we should promote healthy behaviours before people get fat, which makes sense but is totally not what shes fighting for.
Losing weight and healthy behaviors are not always positively correlated. You’re not accounting for those that deal with eating disorders which then result in unhealthy weight loss. By pushing people to solely lose weight, it could result in unhealthy weight loss methods, so her phrasing is more representative of the overall goal of achieving a healthier lifestyle.

In US, according to the CDC, based on 2017-2018 alone, the percentage of adults within the US population that's overweight including obesity is 73.6%. This tells us over half (majority) of our nation is overweight. On the contrary, the percentage of the US population that's underweight is 1.5%. From a pure disease standpoint, I think it is very clear that overweight/obesity affects the US population more so than being underweight is. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the percentage of adults in US that has mental health issue is 26%. Based on National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, the percentage of adults in that has eating disorder is 9%. Assuming that all mental health issues lead to eating disorders and all eating disorders are causing overweight and all the disorders and illnesses mentioned above affect all 73.6% of overweight adults, that would mean 35% of the 73.6% overweight adults in US is caused by eating disorders and mental health issues. This means 25.76% of all eating disorder in US is caused by mental health issues and eating disorders, leaving 47.86% is simply lifestyle/environment/genetics. These percentages obviously can be under-represented, but I accounted all mental illness and eating disorders to overweight contributing so that would also balance out some of the under-representation. Based on what we currently have in front of us, lifestyle/environment/genetics play a much bigger role in overweight/obesity development (~1.86x) than mental health or eating disorder does. Now we know that genetic variation affect each person different in terms of obesity causing as studies have shown the range can be 25-80% and studies are this being done to estimate the percentage of US population obesity is caused by genetics alone. You can argue that BMI isn't the most accurate meter for determining weight as different ethnicities (genetics) have various "normal weight" but realize that mental health and eating disorders actually play a much less significant role than what most people believe and what your comment implies.

I'm sick of people blaming gluten for everything. Gluten only affects people who are intolerant (evidenced in chronic IBS symptoms) or have a genetic autoimmune disease. For the rest of the population, gluten doesn't harm you.

Just because movies, games, the internet and other media, and society at large, seems to prefer a certain face and body type, doesn't mean I do. But even so, I don't think an overweight woman is ever more attractive than a skinny woman. But it's not like they have to be super skinny. Having a bit of a gut is fine. It's all about being reasonable.

As a teenage girl who used to be obese, my life has been so much better since becoming healthy and I don’t see why anyone would want to stay overweight/obese and not try to lose fat? That exactly is the problem. They just don't want to fix themselves. And I know this is a slight tangent, but it is the same scenario for, in my opinion, all the recent obsessions over transgender surgeries and "normalizing" anything under the sun. No one is willing to stop and admit that they may not be right or normal. Everyone of the people in my generation and younger has grown up being told they are special and amazing and that they can be whatever they want, and this is the result.
I got promoted at work into a management position so I'm no longer on the warehouse floor speed walking and lifting heavy items, I've gained about 10 pounds in the last year and I feel pretty terrible. I just feel "blegh" all of the time and it has nothing to with self esteem but just the fact that I've become unhealthy. And I'm only at 150lbs now I can't imagine how a person must feel at double that weight
