Angélique Kidjo reads a letter to the girls of the world

- Born in West Africa in 1960, music legend Angélique Kidjo was immersed in the world of music and dance from an early age thanks to her mother, an acclaimed choreographer and theatre director.
In 2013, with thirteen albums under her belt, a Grammy award to her name, and numerous plaudits for her continued activism, Kidjo chose to impart some hard-earned wisdom to the girls of the world, by way of an open letter.
None other than Angélique herself joined us to read this powerful letter at the tenth anniversary Letters Live show at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Miriam Makeba is a legend…and it is sad she was exiled because South Africa saw her as a threat to apartheid….Pata Pata means “Touch Touch” in Xhosa language….which she sang just before she died…she and Paul Simon sang “Under the African Sky” for his Graceland album in 1987…I was 4 rows from the front for the Graceland tour in Australia….which also featured “Lady Blacksmith Mambazo…..Miriam Makeba will forever be…”Mama Africa”….RIP🕊️🕊️…a beautiful letter to All women of the world.

I'm grateful to Angélique Kidjo's wonderful grandmother who imparted her wisdom to her in her youth and inspired her to follow her dreams and never give up. This mean ol' world has been blessed by the music she has gifted us with.
I first saw and heard Miriam Makeba sing on the Ed Sullivan Show when I was six years old and fell in love with her voice and beautiful face. She exuded such joy!
I was horrified when I was older and learned about apartheid and how she was exiled from her homeland. Miriam never got to see her mother again, her mother died without her daughter by her side, she never got to say goodbye to the woman who gave her life.
I remember my last words to my mother. I brushed her hair and told her how her love and wisdom kept me going when I wasn't strong, and that I am so proud to be her daughter. She passed 6 hours later. I rushed to the hospital to see her one last time, and I'm so glad I had that opportunity. She had a serene smile on her face now free of pain. I lay my head against her chest as I had all my life when I needed to feel her love and strength to help me face hardships.
It's heartbreaking and cruel that dear Miriam Makeba was robbed of her right to be with her mother when she passed.
Angélique Kidjo seems as strong and beautiful as ever, and that brings me joy this morning. It's a beautiful day today, I've got outdoor chores to do on the ranch today and I'm bringing Ms. Kidjo and Ms. Makeba outside with me via bluetooth speaker. I'm getting my playlist ready! Oh, I have to add some Hugh Masekela songs too. Miriam and Hugh were only married for two years, but they loved each other for life. Some partners make better friends than lovers!

God im so tired of the victim syndrome trip everyone in the world is on. Doesnt matter if youre a girl, boy, young, old, dog, or cat. Youre a victim and everyone is after you and your happiness
....exhausting
…they whine.
Men, of course. Maybe spend a day in a woman's shoes? You might think differently about the part men play.
This is all stated as if we live in a world where men are free to pursue our dreams without anger and condemnation from society. Ask any man who has ventured off the beaten path whether there is any truth to that. The letter would be legitimately inspiring without the "I'm a special class of victim" nonsense. It takes a dire lack of empathy to believe something so absurd of half the people around you.
Dear "palace of wisdom": It's partly true that some men who have ventured off the beaten path have also experienced ridicule and encouragement. However please remember that if you have not experienced being a female, particularly a Black female, you don't know what that experience is like. Anjelique Kidjo here is not speaking to "victims." She is speaking to the dreams of little girls, like herself, and giving encouragement to them. Now imagine yourself as a little Black girl iin order to develop the empathy in yourself for people who are different from you. Your bitterness must be painful. I encourage you to pursue a men's group where you can put yourself in a place of healing for your own gender experiences.
@@s.terris9537 Trust me, as a man I am perfectly comfortable in a world that discounts my experiences out of pure apathy, no group or any other therapy needed. A persecution complex may bring attention and kind words, but never inner strength.
