A Modern-Rustic Family Home Designed to Survive Wildfires

- It’s only a few hours’ drive from Seattle, but the Methow Valley on the eastern side of the Cascade mountains in Washington state feels like a different world. Colin and Alisa Sands and their three kids, who all hail from Washington’s western shore, built a second home here to enjoy all that the valley has to offer. With the area’s dry climate in summer comes the risk of wildfires, so adhering to firewise design principles was a must. For help, the Sands hired builder and friend Justin Hamlin, who suggested the Sands bring on architect Dan Nelson. After seeing Nelson’s previous projects on his Houzz profile, the Sands knew he was the right person to create a modern-rustic dream home that would last for generations.

I once saw a video about an architect from Vietnam who built his home into the side of a hill in California so other than some windows and a green roof, the rest of the house was in fact fire proof and had survived two fires.
Love these episodes but would love to see some more about budgeting and prices if possible. It helps put things into perspective.

@@HouzzTV Thx...I was curious of the cost. $300/sf = $720,000.
That's an insane winter cottage
That location! Just....wow!
I'd be interested in seeing the energy efficiency numbers. Lots of glass and no mention of the thermal envelope or blower door testing.
If the world is solar and wind powered, efficiency doesn't matter. Conservation was a response to a fossil fuel crisis.
We no longer have an energy crisis.
i pray you never have to try out your Wildfire resistance. God Bless
Love the idea of the house being there for generations 🙏🏽
Love living in the NW and enjoying all these beautiful natural sights, and the designs they inspire. Well done. Thanks Houzz.
Very nice family residence, I love the large windows with that amazing view among nature...perfect, enjoy!!
Love the perfect combination of nature and living!
Love this houses build in the middle of nowhere. Where you and your family members enjoys the surrounding landscapes.
What a beautiful home and wonderful family
Beautiful home, beautiful family.
''we've built right, for the environment we'are in'' - all the meaning in 1 sentence.
Lovely home, with lots of pluses!👍...and love the landscape using the large stones!
Beautiful home. I would still answer the door naked.
Such a great design, rustic & modern,
Like the open communal space, kind of gives a loft fill.
Great Job!
Thanks

Absolutely gorgeous... This is absolutely gorgeous .....
I LOVE houzz......💞
Amazing house.
So gorgeous!
Looks like more Coasties moving to Eastern Wa.
Awesome! I wouldn't change an inch! Congrats!
This house 's fire resistance is mostly from the defensable space, not so much the building materials. It is very nice, but there is a lot of flammable wood eves.
Love this home & family ❣️
Awesome living. Beautiful love ❤️ your precious home 🏡
Just Beautiful....
Beautiful home
Hi there I just wanted to say first of all things Blessings Galore to you about enjoying The Countryside. I do agree that it is a very beautiful setting. Your house is gorgeous God Bless. May you all have tons of Happy Years there.
Praise Allah, the all mighty.
Awesome place.
What a beautiful family! True Family with loving children.
And their home is like a home in the heaven haha. I hope Almighty Creator would bless me to have something like them.
Salam, Peace be upon you. .
I love what they did here. How expensive is something like this? I think I would want an option to be able to electronically have a barrier come down over the windows just in case ever needed for any reason.
AMAZINGGGG! 👌💖
Great job!
Very Beautiful and livable space
Lots of rounded rocks being dug up where your foundations are going is a side of water inundating the rocks.
This meadow might susceptible to severe flooding every few decades because that’s what the rocks show.
amazing my dream home I hope
beautiful
Beautiful
What a beautiful house but also reminded me with houses on horror movie. I live in Indonesia where my village is surrounded by forest and mountain but never in my life imagine living in a home that away from everyone. Way too dangerous for 3rd world countries lol
Perfection👌❤❤❤
I think they should develop something that's fire proof that covers the whole house when fires are coming
Its not a house n who call it house..... its dream house ... exterior is more impressive than interior
Wow very niice!!
❤️🧡💛💚💙 preciosa.
Honey! Can you put 75 bottles of Glass Plus on your grocery list please???
Cost:
2,400 sq ft x $300/sq ft = $720,000
This home has no privacy whatsoever. You can see right through. No walls for pictures. Not my type of home. However, I am glad it works for them.
How much did this cost? A million or more? It is stunning.
Superlative design. How do the long rectangles of rock enclosed in wire mesh create a fire stop? Just curious.
Changing Things fire won’t have anything to consume once it’s hits the rock. It might get past it but more than likely not.
Rocks don’t burn
Absolutely amazing house.
Are they in the flood plain for that river?
How much?
Modern spin on FLW
It is a beautiful home. But way to many windows for me. And hopefully Bigfoot wont visit this family, since they r very prevailent in the state of washington. But it is a BEAUTIFUL home.

Only $720,000
The house is stunning on the outside the inside design with the peoples' furniture is not so much! Random college of things on the inside.
It is a gorgeous house. Most of all I love the landscaping around it. However to me, as an European, it seems mighty weird to build a house where you have no neighbours, not within visible distance at least.
