This is really helpful because I don't do well with eating breakfast. Something quick like your bars that I could eat later is a great idea. Hard cheese will stay good for a long time, it just gets kind of soft. As long as it's not moldy, you're good to go.
I work for the company that owns Sahale snacks (3:50), glad to see them getting some appreciation on the trail! They typically run on the higher calories side, which is perfect for backpacking in this case lol
They are really good. There are really so many good snacks nowadays.
Can’t to sweets in the AM. Had a case of altitude sickness that I staved off with Snickers and cereal bars. I was nauseous with every bite. It worked, but I still pay for it now. If you throw a Snickers at me in the early AM, I throw up in my mouth a little! Lol! I think trail food is a balance between what you personally like and what fits/isn’t too heavy. So personal! Thanks for sharing!
I really appreciate the simplicity of this. It’s similar to what I like to take. Simple and fits my caloric needs. Sometimes I wonder if I need to take more complex meals, but at the end of the day I just want calories and less time prepping meals means more time just soaking in the beautiful scenery.
Also loved the intro! 🤣
Always appreciate your videos, Steve. Thanks.
I like the Mountain House Scrambled Eggs and Bacon meal. Pack a couple of tortillas and have quick breakfast burritos. Good way to start the day when paired with a good instant coffee!
As always no frills, just straight shooting.
Thx for the video
YESSS! Been doing summer sausages for years. First time I did it, everyone made fun of me. Now every person in my family brings their own. Its the best backpacking lunch hands down
" What do you eat on a Backpacking Trip? "
My normal 4 night trip. 1st night out is always the traditional Steak over a small fire's hot coals and baked potato. Mornings are some sort of bar with coffee or cold soaked Old Fashion Oatmeal & dried fruit mix. Sometimes a Mountain House Biscuits and Sausage meal. Lunch if it's hot ( which it normally is ) a pita or tortilla ( 2 ) with peanut butter ( squeeze tube ) and chopped green Spanish olives ( small sealed plastic container). Supper a dehydrated meal in a freezer , zip lock , bag. Snacks , Summer sausage , Cheese , Ritz crackers ( single serving packs ) and home made Trail mix , lots of trail mix. Back in civilization and the motel , a visit to the salad bar for starters. Going straight home , a Hamburger & Onion rings , the biggest I can find. .
It's great to see what other people bring. There are "better"/healthier alternatives for bars that contain less white sugar and more good stuff. Walmart carries a lot of them as do all healthfood stores. Also, there are hard cheeses that will keep for days easily. Heavy but I love the treat.
For breakfast, I typically dump an instant coffee packet mixed into a oatmeal packet. It’s quick, filling enough and gets me going
If someone ate only peanut butter that bear can could fit 3 months worth
I just don't see how this could possibly be enough food:
Nature Valley granola bar: 190 cal
Great Value Fruit & Grain bar: 130 cal
Starkist Lunch-to-Go kit: 260 cal
Mtn House Beef Stroganoff: 580 cal
That comes to 1,160 calories. Assuming a full grown male needs about 3,000 calories per day of hiking, you'd have to get nearly 2,000 of them, or 2/3rds of the day's requirements, from trail mix and peanut butter!
Dude, love the opening! capture every calorie! Great video man! Planning for food can be such a pain and this makes it so much easier. I'll definitely have to try the trail pizzas. BTW, try the Sweetart Ropes for a trail snack...holy smokes they are amazing!
thanks for sharing this aspect of the trip. I always learn something from watching others on the trail.
I actually posted this video selfishly hoping people will share their lunch ideas and give me some more variety
Lunch is definitely the hard one, right? You don’t wanna break out the stove, don’t wanna clean a pot, so it really limits what you can do. I think fresh veggies and fruits are good (apples, oranges). Dehydrated versions are good also.
Mine is pretty standard. Mountain House breakfasts and dinners. Tuna pitas for lunch - with soup on days I’m staying in camp.
Love the honesty.
Oh~~~this is the video that I need! I am really into backpack hike but always feel hard to decide what food I bring for it more than a day hike:)
Thank you. Glad it helps.
Really great videos lately. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I like the Nature Valley bars for breakfast also - I put peanut butter on them. Belvita breakfast bars are also good with PB. This plus a cold Breakfast Essentials + coffee packet in a .7L water bottle gets me going in the morning. Often I will have my oatmeal or granola for lunch.
That all sounds good except the coffee and peanut butter. I’ve never cared for either. But I know that makes me weird. Thanks for watching!
Chicken and Dumplings is my favorite, hearty as can be
You should check out the Peak Refuel Chicken Pesto Pasta. It’s unbelievable
Just found your channel, really appreciating it, and enjoy seeing parts of colorado to influence my next outings out of Denver!!
Thanks! Glad you are here! I love Colorado so expect to see more in the future.
Great video, short and informative!
Thanks!
being able to take crackers that weigh virtually nothing is reason enough to take the bear can. I love my bear can.
Great video. Im same way with breakfast. Even at home Ill grab a bar and head out door to work. I try and add atleast 1/2 a days worth of food just incase Im hungry or get behind. Have yet to try the mountain house type of food. Usally I just pack "snacks" and thats it for every meal.
Mountain House is surprisingly good! And I’ve recently started eating Peak Refuel which is good too but a bit more expensive. My wife convinced me to bring some of their breakfasts on my last hike and so I got to try something new. The breakfast was good but I don’t like lingering at camp that long in the mornings. Got to hit the trail! Thanks for watching!
I lived near Yosemite for over a year in both Mariposa and Merced counties I use to go to get a sandwich somewhere in Mariposa while living there and while living in Merced go to subway before my hike or the day before and bring it day of hike 😂 the amount of times I use to whip out a footling sub in the middle of a hike a get stared at was a lot.
Everything you said. And that first real meal back in town, make it a good one. My go-to is the largest Mexican platter I can get. A hack I used for the mountain house to make them fit better in my bear can, was to put the contents in freezer bags and using the original foil pack to reheat the food with the freezer bag inside it. Good stuff as always!
I was going to do that with these mountain house meals but I managed to make them fit without it. I’v heard of people boiling them in a freezer bag but I don’t know that I would trust that. And yes! That first meal is always the best. And I always drink about a gallon of coke witch makes for lots of stops on the way home.
@@MyLifeOutdoors There's a whole book out there called Freezer Bag Cooking that is made for backpackers. I've been using ideas from that for over 15 years, and never had an issue with any of the freezer bags tearing or ripping. Just get good ones, you can often wash them at home and re-use them. These days I still prefer to just cook in the mtn house foil bag like you though, it's easier to pack and plan that way.
@@tarekith I’ll probably end up trying a freezer bag at some point. Glad to hear you have done it successfully.
@@MyLifeOutdoors sorry to bombard your channel with comments lately, really enjoying the videos as I work my way through them each night.
No Mariposa review?
@@tarekith I don’t feel bombarded. I’m glad your here and I enjoy the comments. I didn’t like the Meriposa but A lot of that is because it’s slightly too big for me. Not enough to notice before I used it and now they won’t take it back. I’m going to sell it. I didn’t want to put out a review when some of my complaints could have been caused by a poor fit.
Tillamook cheese individual packs keep for days on trail as long as it's not super hot out
Mtn. House Lasagna ….the best of the best.
Those Sahale mixes are incredible. My local dollar store stocks single-serve pacs and I buy them out every time I see them
If you don't "buy them out" and leave some for other people to discover, your store will order more and then you don't have to hoard.
@@whitneymacdonald4396 yeah I wouldn't empty a whole freshly stocked rack (24 packs I think?) for myself, but there are other people that do....so they are often out of stock for weeks and when I do see them it's usually 3 or 4 left and I grab them all. In fact, it's been about 3 months since I've caught some in stock so maybe you can go find whoever IS hoarding them and tell them to quit 🤣🤣
I think we would get our food containers confused. Pretty much everything I eat! Kudos on the Sour Patch kids....my fav!
That’s crazy! You said the same about our gear. We must be on to something
same here right up to those sour patch kids...mouth started watering immediately. I think my favorite fast breakfast is the Breakfast Essentials powder with Nedo milk powder in a baggy. Add beautiful Sierra water and shake and chug. Enjoy the coffee with a bar and Im fueled up.
I just found you on Facebook and wow this is very helpful thanks for sharing it can't wait to hike when this covid is over
That’s awesome! I didn’t realize my Facebook was reaching anyone. Thanks for stopping by and for watching
Why do you need covid to be over in order to hike through the woods?
‘The outdoor boys’ eat way better 😉
All the best and thanks for your insights.
Can you please do another food video? That's probably one of the major things I don't have my head around on how to do for longer trips.
For breakfast I would actually recommend protein oats they taste good and are fairly nutritious/energy rich
In the first day I bring fresh food because as the trip progresses the ability to keep fresh food goes downhill quick. So basically I start out super healthy, with fresh produce and olive oil and then second day I am still into the 24 hour window so I am also able to have fresh food, then on the third day all the fresh that I can keep is an avocado which I originally packed unripe so that it ripens over the first two days. Then on the fourth and fifth days I eat only dehydrated stuff which can be healthy, but my body says yes to it for about 2 days and thats it. Thats the max I want to be on the trail anyway, 5 days. And i'm ok carrying the extra weight of the water in the fresh produce because its so much healthier than dehydrated stuff, your body will thank you.
I highly recommend Pack It Gourmet meals out of Austin Texas I believe. It’s a small company that makes awesome dehydrated foods. It would be great if you could do a review of smaller dehydrated food companies besides the big two or three. Give it a try.
Shout out Austin Texas
Where I can buy your hoodie? It looks amazing!
Hello, where did you get that red fleece hoodie? Great vids btw, subbed!
Have you tried the fix and fogg everything butter? I've heard good things, but only recently ordered some.
What is that red and yellow sweater like top you are wearing? looks very comfy!
Hi, what is the hat that you were wearing? Good airflow? Thx in advance.
East coast we're required to have these crazy bomb proof bear kegs cause one of them bears figured out how to unscrew your style an then taught her cubs, etc
Amazing bear. My canister is the same one he has and there are tiny tabs in the lid that have to be depressed before it can be unscrewed. Hard for a human to open. Your bear and cubs should get an Olympic medal…..or……
Cheese lasts weeks. Buy a good cheddar and carve off what you want at each meal. Cheese was discovered/invented for longevity in the desert. I’ve had cheese last me 3 weeks on the trail. If it starts to mold, cut off the bad part and you’re good. It’s not like bread where seeing mold means it’s deep.
Great video thanks! Question: can i open fire cook on the trail?
On the four pass loop open fires are banned above 10,800 feet of elevation. Which is quite a bit of this trail. There may be localized bans at some popular campsites.
I'm sorry but I can't get over "pizza sauce". That silly part aside, fantastic and concise video dude!
👍👍
My take on trekking meals is a good breakfast, snack dinner and a good tea. Works for me, but everyone has different needs or take depending on their energy output. 😊
I like the grammar correction for all those sticklers out there
Nature Valley adding "Crunchy" to this particular packaging.........as if they offered anything other than dehydrated cardboard in their product lineup 🤣
Bear vault canister size?
I'm hiking the maroon bells in July. I have a question when it comes to brushing your teeth during my hike. Is it OK to brush teeth with toothpase as long as you are 200 ft from water source and broadcast the spit?
Yes. Treat toothpaste like human waste, except you don’t have to bury it.
@@MyLifeOutdoors , thank you
Does anyone know what red/green sweatshirt he has on? It looks very comfortable
melanzana
@@andreamaccanti2241 I found out from another video but thank you for the reply!
Canned smoked sardines?
Here's the problem with those tuna packs.... It's always SWEET Relish..... Blech! I haven't looked very hard, but why won't they make them with DILL Relish?!?
Because dill relish is Blah! 🤣
I must concur
Where are the powdered sugar donuts?
Gave them up years ago. Turns out they aren’t that great.
No gass station sushi?
Ugh... Bear canisters ☹️
Got to get those crumbs, eh?
Dude.... really? Trail pizza sounds freaking awesome I'm a cold soaker and all my meals suck. Did I mention that I hate you LOL.
It IS pretty amazing! It’s also a bit heavy. Hate you too. 😘
LOL
I find when Im outdoors I actually eat less
So all junk food basically
Everybody touts the importance of breakfast or seem to. Yet I know more ppl that are not big breakfasts eaters than are. Wonder if those that are not are late night eaters. We all need to listen to our own bodies and queses.
See? I would die of starvation with these micro portions. I need like a 42 oz steak and giant baked potato and steamed broccoli for every. Single. Meal.
Since you corrected yourself with begun/began, I feel obligated to tell you it’s “days’”.
damn man that's a lot of mountain house.... my GI tract couldn't handle that
Steven....that's not very healthy stuff....
U must be a bear
Not bad. But I'm a carnivore and need more meat. Also what about beverages
I am also a carnivore! The sandwich was turkey, the summer sausage was sausage, the dinners were chicken, chicken and beef respectively. The tuna was fish. Every meal but breakfast had meat. I’m not sure how I could have included much more. If you have suggestions I’m open to them. Thanks for watching.
@@MyLifeOutdoors lol
"the summer sausage was sausage"
A good food option for a three day trip would be to eat a nice pre-hike meal and bring no food. I'm pretty sure plenty of watchers of this video could use a day or two without food.
