I just cut plastic worms, or craws or lizards, down. Lots of fishermen and fisherwomen have been doing the same for longer. So, maybe your point was “the Ned was sold long after people started making them”. If so, yes you are 100% correct. It’s ridiculous how much money people spend on crap when they have the stuff to make it themselves and better.

I remember back in the mid 70’s using a plastic bait called a Sting Ray grub that had no built-in action but caught fish like crazy. It was just a 3” grub body with a flat, spear shaped tail fished on a ball jig head and favorite colors were smoke and watermelon. I think they were made by the Mann’s Bait Company. Just seems to me all new lures today are some type of copy of lures from back in the past with a few modifications.
I read an article that said fish have memory and the only lure that consistently catches fish was a worm style lure because it appeared non-threatening. You can throw a lure one day, come back the next and the fish won't even look at it. But you can throw a TRD or worm day after day and catch fish with no problem.
Totally agree with just a hunk of plastic as an effective bait or jig trailer. I’ve been using hunks of plastic such as broken remnants of plastic worms, using just the head section for years. Senkos for example, if you wacky rig a lot, break and crack, so I’ve used these broken pieces and have been way before the Ned rig became popular as jig trailers. Awesome results!! Great information!
Last year, I heard about the Ned. I reasearched and bought some parts. I was in a spot catching a few bass. I tried the Ned rig and caught a 3 pound spot.
I bought some Ned rig's at Walmart. Green Pumpkin color. Took the small soft plastic off. Then put a Green Pumpkin 5 inch Senko on it. The Largemouth were attacking Bluegill's on the nest. Bumped it along threw the Bluegill nest's. Just as I bumped it a couple of feet outside the nest the bass were hitting the ned rig hard. Flying out of the water to trying to throw the soft bait. I would hit the line even harder. That little hook needs to be hit hard when the bass bites. To get it into the bass's mouth. They loved the Senko on the ned rig. I think I just reinvented the ned rig. The 5 inch Senko bounces along the bottom. Standing up so the bass can see it better. The Ned rig on steroids. Check it out. It work's fishermen. Shawn.
Ned Kehde, "The father of the ned rig", prefers a "no feel presentation". If you can feel the bottom during your retrieve, you should lighten your jig. 1/16 seemed to be the weight he used most often, but used 1/32 and 3/32 a lot too. Another fun fact is Mr. and Mrs. Kehde logged the catch and release of 49,324 bass from 2005 to 2020.
This is a great video. If you are lucky enough to own a copy of "Knowing Bass" (which I do), this study is described in depth. What makes this lure innovative is that it follows the science, rather than trying to design a lure to catch the angler. Glad you shared this info.
I remember reading about this study about 8-10 years ago. It used to be on the Berkeley website somewhere but I couldn’t find it last time I looked. Fast forward to the Ned rig…i remember thinking they finally figured out how to sell it 😂

Great video, I have always believed this, I've seen bass turn away from defensive crayfish so it only makes sense that itll catch less. I've also found from experimenting that I catch more fish on a trd worm than a trd craw which I believe is because some bass just dont want to get pinched again and are deterred by a defensive crayfish.
40 years ago i started bass fishing. never once saw a bass "turn away" from a crawfish. but that was in texas. maybe its different in different territories.

Ya, it'll taste good, but it might be a while before you get the chance to do it again. Lol But ya, nonpregnant, 2-4 pound burbot are in my opinion the very best fresh water fish meat. The only freshwater member of the link cod family. And every bit as good, to me. My first time catching one, I cooked it very simple, just to test the quality. Cooked in a frying pan over low heat, with nothing but butter in the pan. It was out of this world delicious. The next time I grilled it, with only salt and pepper. Tip no 3: I like to dull up my shiny worms taking a knife and scraping them. When sight fishing I could see the bass hesitate on shiny worms but when using a dull one they grab it without hesitation.

You should come up to the north west, not only is the Columbia River a top ten bass fishery, but we have a few lakes that can rival any Midwest, or southern lake. It's our best kept secret
Deps came out with something called the "Cover Scat" and if you want to really test your theory here it's made to exactly resemble a craw that's lost it's pinchers but it's larger- much larger than a ned bait. It works great- I've caught many bass on it- lots of ppl have- but like all other baits and techniques it only works under the proper conditions at the right times. There will never be a bait that always works everywhere. I've seen days where all they would hit is a fully intact craw like a rage craw or something- and others where they wanted the cover scat- I guess somedays they feel like fighting for dinner and others they don't.
Cover scat gets bit because it is meant to be fished weightless like a senko. This is why it gets bit. If you put the cover scat on a jig as a trailer it kinda sucks! Not saying you can't catch bass with the cover scat as a jig trailer because you sure can. It is more the technique that is catching the fish the bait is there as a decoration. This is just my 2 cents
neg rig is the bomb, tho i dont agree so much with pulling the barb, your right it does get kinked a bit but a good alternative is to switch to something with the lead ridged keeper like a nedlocks hook
Makes sense, you don't usually try and eat something when it has its defensive large claws raised as if to attack and/or fend you off. The fish are looking for weakness. A crayfish that's lost its claws is helpless and a prime target.
I fish heavily pressured waters, and have been catching alot, by fishing painfully slow! Lol...I was just typing "painfully slow" and that was your exact description. 🤣 It works though. Some of these places I fish, guys swear there are no bass, because they see lures everyday. I have caught a 5 1/2 and a 6 pounder in that pond where folks swear there's no bass...lol. Painfully slow works! Many times, I leave my bait sit for 30-50 seconds before even twitching it the first time. I think it pisses them off to have something that won't get out of the way, in front of them.
Guess I'm just gettin old but my experience is that small lures catch small Bass. All my biggest came from 8" & up plastic worms. Big topwater lures too.
When fishing gets real tough for me, I start throwing a 4 inch Mann's Jelly Worm on a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce open hook jig head using spinning tackle and 6 lb. test mono.

How about using an O-ring, in front of the hook keeper on the bottom of the hook? Then there is no need to clip it off. O-rings can be purchased with Different Diameters.

Makes sense. Bass more often strike craws in defense of their territory and nests so they’d want to scoop up em whole and spit em out. And you get better penetration when the whole body and thus the hook is in their mouth. Sounds like the NEKO he’ll granite is the go to bait speaking scientifically
I don't know why, patience maybe, but I can't throw the Ned rig. I bass fish 3-5 days a week and I've made less than 25 casts with a Ned rid. I know I'm leaving fish out there by not throwing it but I'm just not a finesse fisherman at all. I am however gonna start throwing my own version of one. Well it's not my idea but I've seen it work and I can still use heavier line and a heavy rod. But, I'm gonna start cutting down a senko a little bit and taking the skirt off a 3/8th ounce jig and throw it that way
I now use a shakey head weight on my Bed riggs and I have doubled the amount of fish I catch. Use the same size hook and weight size and you'll be amazed.
Would be interesting to know whether the different styles were presented to the bass in a different sequence with the same results (in other words, did the bass exposed to the "Ned" plastic first preferentially bite that plastic over the others?)...
Looks just like a dragon fly larva. Moves like one too. Max meal vs min. Risk. Catch a few to eat, clean them and look in the stomach. 4" and under soft fin fish #1, #2 dragon fly larva. The catch is " feeding" bass. Most of the time we're looking for a reaction.
0:01 haven’t even watched yet and I already know what your gonna say … take the pinchers off ya craws…learned this the hard way fishing on lake Holbrook in East Texas … used to swap my lures out when the lost a pincher because it would spin sometimes on the retrieve … was running out of that color and wanted to save a bag for the tourney… caught a ton of fish with the one pincher …. When it lost both pinchers to blue gills I was about to take it off but just kept flipping it any way caught 3 in a row all 4-5+ … “I was cheap and broke in college back then “ I had $450 to pay my cabin rent and I didn’t even have the money for my cap and Gown ($300) . 🤦🏿♂️so decided to skip My College Graduation @ Jarvis Christian College put $20 worth of gas in my Boat 👨🏿🎓 and fish the Saturday tournament… Got the Win 🏆 paid my rent . And picked up my Mathematics Degree 📜 on Monday . My family really didn’t care since my niece was Graduating from TCU the same day .
It's because crawl fish swim with there pinchers tucked. If the bass strikes while the crawl is swimming it goes down Smoothly. If a bass attacks is while a crawl has it pinchers out it can pinch the fishes mouth on way in or go down wrong.

This is the first I heard of a ned rig so do you just cut a worm or is their a size to by I want to try this this year. Is there a diameter of worm that works the best or color?
Hate to say it but there are times the deadly Nedly works better than anything else here on Tablerock. I always set my visiting family members up with one so they will have plenty of action.
As a baitmaker, baits are made 90% to catch fisherman, 10% to catch fish. We have A LOT of baits that we use that catches more fish than pretty baits. We don't sell it because it's not "pleasing" or "cool" looking to the eye of fishermans.
I was on a highland reservoir today. I caught a lil fella and could not keep the grass off my red eye shad. The school moved on and a first timer next to me got a toad on a zman trd. I think the big ones let the more aggressive lil fellas go for the reaction style baits while they're schooled up.

I think they hit the ned rig more because it's smaller and to them it's an easier meal and smaller fish can hit it better.. I LOVE the Peanut butter and jelly mini stick O or sink O I forget which one it's called but they have them at bass pro.. I've caught more fish on that exact bait and a rooster tail during summer time than anything.. and you would be extremely surprised how big of a fish you can catch on those tiny little baits too lol
This is a real crawfish in the bottom between small rocks. The most simple is the most effectif. Its a lot of years i fish with ika withowt hairs and insert stopped in the bottom.
That's plenty, as long as you set your drag right. Too lose and it shakes the hook, too tight and your line breaks. Depends on how big a hook you have, cause a size 2 is different than a 2/0
It makes sense that they would strike a crawfish without claws more than one that has claws. Imagine for a moment that you're a very hungry bass. You see two crawfish next to one another. One perfectly healthy, and one that looks slightly injured, and missing a claw. Which do you think would put up less of a fight? From what I hear, bass are opertunistic feeders. Why do you think crankbaits and other lures that imitate dead or dying baitfish do so well? They look like an easy meal.
I have caught more big bass on a ned rig than any other lure. It's my go-to hands down. It's automatic. If the ned isn't getting bit, there's no fish in the area.

last winter i cought 2 to 1 more fish with a hotdog than a sucker minnow for pike under tip ups when ice fishing (yall know nothing about this, eh?). just shows that nothing should be too surprising.

What part of the country are you fishing in? I'm in florida , so I use alot of moving baits that are weedless since there is so much vegetation. I've never really used a ned or wacky rig

My theory is that the Ned Rig TRD imitates the dragonfly nymph. Crawls slowly on the bottom and same cylindrical shape and size.

I've fished the ned rig a handful of times and they do catch a lot of fish. Not the biggest but definitely a good bass catcher.

I catch bass on trout lures 😆 good ones to last yr i got a handfull of 2plus and a few 5lbs and one 6.5lb LM. Not even trying to catch them either
I use Ned rigs for walleyes. And have pretty good success
How about using an O-ring, in front of the hook keeper on the bottom of the hook? Then there is no need to clip it off. O-rings can be purchased with Different Diameters.

Makes sense. Bass more often strike craws in defense of their territory and nests so they’d want to scoop up em whole and spit em out. And you get better penetration when the whole body and thus the hook is in their mouth. Sounds like the NEKO he’ll granite is the go to bait speaking scientifically
I don't know why, patience maybe, but I can't throw the Ned rig. I bass fish 3-5 days a week and I've made less than 25 casts with a Ned rid. I know I'm leaving fish out there by not throwing it but I'm just not a finesse fisherman at all. I am however gonna start throwing my own version of one. Well it's not my idea but I've seen it work and I can still use heavier line and a heavy rod. But, I'm gonna start cutting down a senko a little bit and taking the skirt off a 3/8th ounce jig and throw it that way
I now use a shakey head weight on my Bed riggs and I have doubled the amount of fish I catch. Use the same size hook and weight size and you'll be amazed.
What size hook/weight tends to work best for you?
Would be interesting to know whether the different styles were presented to the bass in a different sequence with the same results (in other words, did the bass exposed to the "Ned" plastic first preferentially bite that plastic over the others?)...

Looks just like a dragon fly larva. Moves like one too. Max meal vs min. Risk. Catch a few to eat, clean them and look in the stomach. 4" and under soft fin fish #1, #2 dragon fly larva. The catch is " feeding" bass. Most of the time we're looking for a reaction.
0:01 haven’t even watched yet and I already know what your gonna say … take the pinchers off ya craws…learned this the hard way fishing on lake Holbrook in East Texas … used to swap my lures out when the lost a pincher because it would spin sometimes on the retrieve … was running out of that color and wanted to save a bag for the tourney… caught a ton of fish with the one pincher …. When it lost both pinchers to blue gills I was about to take it off but just kept flipping it any way caught 3 in a row all 4-5+ … “I was cheap and broke in college back then “ I had $450 to pay my cabin rent and I didn’t even have the money for my cap and Gown ($300) . 🤦🏿♂️so decided to skip My College Graduation @ Jarvis Christian College put $20 worth of gas in my Boat 👨🏿🎓 and fish the Saturday tournament… Got the Win 🏆 paid my rent . And picked up my Mathematics Degree 📜 on Monday . My family really didn’t care since my niece was Graduating from TCU the same day .
It's because crawl fish swim with there pinchers tucked. If the bass strikes while the crawl is swimming it goes down Smoothly. If a bass attacks is while a crawl has it pinchers out it can pinch the fishes mouth on way in or go down wrong.
Pretty much all my brother uses is the ned rig.i just cant do it.it catches the numbers but it really doesn't catch the size

This is the first I heard of a ned rig so do you just cut a worm or is their a size to by I want to try this this year. Is there a diameter of worm that works the best or color?
Hate to say it but there are times the deadly Nedly works better than anything else here on Tablerock. I always set my visiting family members up with one so they will have plenty of action.

As a baitmaker, baits are made 90% to catch fisherman, 10% to catch fish. We have A LOT of baits that we use that catches more fish than pretty baits. We don't sell it because it's not "pleasing" or "cool" looking to the eye of fishermans.
I was on a highland reservoir today. I caught a lil fella and could not keep the grass off my red eye shad. The school moved on and a first timer next to me got a toad on a zman trd. I think the big ones let the more aggressive lil fellas go for the reaction style baits while they're schooled up.

I think they hit the ned rig more because it's smaller and to them it's an easier meal and smaller fish can hit it better.. I LOVE the Peanut butter and jelly mini stick O or sink O I forget which one it's called but they have them at bass pro.. I've caught more fish on that exact bait and a rooster tail during summer time than anything.. and you would be extremely surprised how big of a fish you can catch on those tiny little baits too lol
This is a real crawfish in the bottom between small rocks. The most simple is the most effectif. Its a lot of years i fish with ika withowt hairs and insert stopped in the bottom.

Question - would a 7ft Medium Light rod be ok for this, or do you need the power of a Medium? Spooled up with 15lb braid to a 8 lb leader.
That's plenty, as long as you set your drag right. Too lose and it shakes the hook, too tight and your line breaks. Depends on how big a hook you have, cause a size 2 is different than a 2/0
Exactly, you really don't even need to "set the hook" with this lure. You can simply lean back with a light wire hook.
I use a 7ft ML with 15lb braid and 6 or 8lb floro for my Ned presentation. Works great with the proper drag setting.

It makes sense that they would strike a crawfish without claws more than one that has claws. Imagine for a moment that you're a very hungry bass. You see two crawfish next to one another. One perfectly healthy, and one that looks slightly injured, and missing a claw. Which do you think would put up less of a fight?
From what I hear, bass are opertunistic feeders. Why do you think crankbaits and other lures that imitate dead or dying baitfish do so well? They look like an easy meal.
I just fish Senkos until they are worn out. Then I cut them in half and fish them as Ned Rigs.
I have caught more big bass on a ned rig than any other lure. It's my go-to hands down. It's automatic. If the ned isn't getting bit, there's no fish in the area.
They catch Walleye too.
I do t have much success with a Ned rig. I only fish ponds though and they usually have a mucky bottom. I think my rig is getting lost in the muck.

last winter i cought 2 to 1 more fish with a hotdog than a sucker minnow for pike under tip ups when ice fishing (yall know nothing about this, eh?). just shows that nothing should be too surprising.

What part of the country are you fishing in? I'm in florida , so I use alot of moving baits that are weedless since there is so much vegetation. I've never really used a ned or wacky rig
