This car is mint. Compliments to the owner. It's got Recaros not the R32 seats which are Koenig and a Jetta cluster. Lol, that's why I asked you to review mine. I have the 2.8 4MOTION, tuned, 6speed manual with a short shifter, high flow cats, custom exhaust & Koni suspension on 18 inch Rotiforms. Still have a few mods to complete though. The VR6 is addictive. Glad you liked it.

I had one of these a couple years ago, manual VR5 with 170hp, in Black Magic Pearl with full black leather interior just like this one. I had put a sportier rear muffler on it and it sounded amazing. It's nice to experience it again in this video. I wish VW still made the Golf with 5 cylinder engines. I'd buy a MK7 Golf with a 5 cylinder engine in a heartbeat.
Haha, went into this vid with low expectations of this car, but that looked a hoot, and that sound is miles better than a lot of the modern cars that sound like vacuum cleaners!
This car has the raspy sound like the scooby, without the Turbo or the Supercharger. Best sounding one I heard, I have one too, so responsive it amazes me too 🥰
That thing sounds great! I just fitted a motorcycle can to mine , just need to pick up a clamp and exhaust hanger tomorrow and take it for a rip! Worth mentioning that these engines have two banks of intake manifolds, so it changes from one length of manifold to another at about 4200rpm. So its got good torque low down and then a bit more get up after 4200rpm. These are great cars for hauling along the motorway, but if it had a 6th gear that would be great!
Thanks. Fun video. I've been mostly a VW driver since the 1980s, bot new and used cars. I missed out on the VR5. VR6 era. Traded in a nice 2014 VW GTI (purchased new) for a more practical used Tiguan in 2020, It got horrible mileage, and was pokey slow. I replaced it in 2021 with a 2017 VW Alltrack SEL. I love it. Now I only regret that I was never able to own a TDI VW. I may look for a used one.
These things don’t sound like a RS5. The base tune is very similar but the vr5s are a lot rougher, deeper and much louder. I drove a Golf V5 once with straight pipe exhaust and I still hear that noise in my head. It is bloody addictive, yeah you can call me traumatized. 😂 P.S. They are a bit slow when stock but you can give it some old school tuning and it will happily rev way passed 7.5k with 210-220 hp output. This is modern hothatch territory.
This golf in the video looks quicker than my 1.8t golf with its 150hp stock map. Ofc With a custom map its a different story, but extra power will not make mine sound as good as a V5!

The Mk4 GTI could be ordered also with the VR5 engine - at least in europe. Basically the only ever GTI with a 5 cylinder. They are super rare. I have one and it’s awesome 🤩 … and actually not so slow … decent daily driver with a lot of fun. Basically a fuel to sound machine 😜
@@Sk0dieTransmission is different. 1,8l 4 cylinder GTIs have 5 Gear (150PS) and 6 Gear (180PS). 2,3l 5 cylinder GTIs had only a 5 Gear transmission. A 6 gear transmission for the 2,3l VR5 was only available for the 4 Motion models, although the gear ratio was the same as in the 5 Gear. According to my knowledge 4 Motion could not be choosen for MK4 GTIs with 5 cylinder. So a real 6 gear transmission is missing. A 6th great would fit perfectly to the 2,3l VR5. But there are companies how can build 6 gear out of your 5 gear transmission. All the other stuff you mentioned should be the same.

Lovely car, lovely engine. If anyone needs a coolant crack pipe for one of these (pipe between the water pipe and t-stat) they are NLA and i've just fabricated a few out of aluminium.
I have The VR5 also and it with Haldex , its have 3 door and 6 speed Manuel gearbox here in Sweden and also green metalic. Engine code AQN so 170whp. White-Full leather seats its fun to drive also in winter to drift
I have had the Seat Toledo 1m 2.3 V5 20V since 2013, same engine as in the same K&N air filter, double R32 exhaust, interior is all from a Seat Leon Cupra 1m, the car I bought with 150,000 km now has 268,000 km on it

Many VWs had inline 5 engines. In America and Asian markets the Jetta and Golf were both sold with 2.5 liter NA inline 5’s. In Europe the Touareg and Transporter van got inline 5 diesel engines.

They're not that slow. I have a V5 170 with the mods, it puts out around 190 bhp and can hit 60 in 6.5 secs. It will coast at 140mph all day long. Thats not rapid by any means, I absolutely agree but it isnt slow either and it sounds gorgeous. I've owned mapped Focus ST, mapped Focus RS, mapped Vectra 2.0T, mapped Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, and a Caterham with a Capri 2.8i V6 engine and honestly this is the best sounding car ever.
@esotericman22 what mods have you done and did you get the car remapped? I have a GTI 1.8t 150hp and I can only manage 8s! Sounds like you would leave me for dead off the line🤣 I have considered replacing my GTI with a VR5 as don't want heaps of power, I am just looking for more low end torque as I've heard the VR5 is alot smoother to drive, plus the sound alone seems almost worth the possible downsides. I'd prefer a car that sounds good and handles really good, rather than a big power wheel spinner. I dislike the long gears paired with turbo lag in my GTI, even with the tiny k03. Have you driven a 1.8t golf to compare to yours?
@@Sk0die I bought my Golf as is. It has a cold air feed, shielded K+N induction kit, Direnza manifold, Miltek exhaust with a sports high flow cat and mapped to it all. I've not driven a 1.8t but I've been in one. I just love the torque and the sound of the VR5. It isn't super quick but it is very torquey and pulls like a train in every gear, handles like a go kart too. I love it! In my view I'd definitely recommend anyone to get one, it's a gorgeous car and I wouldn't swap it.
