    Thank you SO much for this! I have pretty bad ADHD and usually need to be doing three things at a time, while only listening to tutorials, but you are so entertaining and you present the information so clearly and without any fluff that I just finished watching this tutorial without doing anything else at the same time!

      It depends on the job at hand to be fair. In the video I'm using either a blazer or the Tsunami from Pepe Tools. But most of the time I love to use my smith little torch!

    Thank you a lot, excellently explained! Would you be so kind and explain one moment, why do we first put the soldered jewellery in the water not directly in the pickle? Thank you a lot!

    • @flyingcheff
      @flyingcheff Месяц назад +1

      To quench the hot metal before putting it in the acid pickle. Several reasons that I've heard (and follow), three of which are 1) hot metal can cause the caustic acid pickle to spatter and splash out, and 2) hot metal can unintentionally have any particles of dirt or debris that may be in the pickle, attach and stick to your piece- adding more clean up. And, 3), hot metal plunged into acid pickle increases toxic fumes from the pickle and suface flux. Flux fumes are among the most toxic. I hope that's helpful. 🌺

  • @flyingcheff
    @flyingcheff Месяц назад

    Lucy, I love everything about you, your channel, and what you do. And you are a riot! That said, I don't understand the deference to cheap butane torches (for metalsmithing). The #1 problem with soldering (for beginners) is butane torches. They single handedly make a simple job an unnecessarily challenging activity. A butane torch will sometimes do the job, but at what level of hassle and overheating or undeheating, melting, etc.Can we ever address that elephant in the room? There is a very real reason why professionals don't use butane torches. I'd invest in a real torch before any other "kit" when advising new (serious) metalsmithing students. Do you use a more typical metalsmithing torch for your more advanced classes?

    • @LucyWalkerJewellery
      @LucyWalkerJewellery  Месяц назад

      Ohhh absolutely so true! It's just that for folks that don't know that they really want to invest in this - they can probably get their hands on one of these really cheaply or for free if they know someone who likes fancy cooking (I'm an egg sandwich for dinner kinda gal so that's not me). For me though, in our classes, I most often use a Smith Little Torch with oxy propane. Although in the beginner classes I like to show using both - just to show it can be done! But 100% a good torch should be pretty early on the list if you're gonna make anything larger than ring bands and small pendants! Although I will say - the larger butane torches do pack quite a punch (I've managed to solder small bangles no problemo).

    Two questions, are we able to take your classes if we can't have anything beyond butane torches? And, for hobby folks, can we use copper, red brass for final projects and nickel silver for creating design ideas before we try with sterling silver due to the high price? And what projects would be then more suitable...Thanks.

    • @LucyWalkerJewellery
      @LucyWalkerJewellery  Месяц назад +1

      Hey lovely - absolutely you can get by with a butane torch. Some of the projects might need scaling down, but most can be done with a decent butane torch!! And ohhhhhh not only is it ok to use brass bronze and copper, but when we're just starting out - I highly recommend it! We're not so terrified to make mistakes that way!.
